Minion the Second emerged from his cave. Blinking against the sunlight, he quizzed the messenger, "What? The Minions are in charge again, you say? The People need a spineless whelp to lead them to second place?" An enthusiastic glint hit his eyes, "I'm just your man!"
IBT (450BC): In the capital of Chaos, one citizen is still harvesting the sweet sweet mud of the floodplains (now with a hamlet). Three new citizens are slacking. With all due politeness, we convince them to find work around the town. Lest we all starve. One goes to the corn, one to the mine, and one to the <strike>laboratory</strike> <strike>library</strike> thinking hut (scientist specialist). The city is building walls (with no progress) followed by a granary (44/60 completed). The walls are a good idea, but the granary will be more useful with the corn. Walls are cancelled for now, but may be restarted later. One warrior, Ugg (with big stick), guards the city.
The city of Theory has moved to the northeast. It's three citizens are working two forests and an oasis, so everyone at least looks busy. We leave them be (for the moment). The city is building an obelisk (with no progress). The city already has a library for their cultural needs, so we cancel the obelisk. A settler was scheduled next (21/100 completed), but there would be no one to escort them through the dangerous wilds to a new founding. We debate this for a moment, and decide that a new settler would be OK. However, we reassign the citizens' work detail. Instead of the forests, we sent the folks to the pig pens and the mines. This proves to be far more efficient than working in the forests (as much fun as that may be). Ikono-know, the warrior, provide police and detective services for Theory. (What, we don't have police stations yet? I guess they just stand around with their clubs then. Oh, "I'll just stand here" is in Butterfly? Then Who's on First?)
In our third city of Butterfly, to the northwest of Chaos, our two citizens are working a forest and a plains. They're building... the Pyramids? No progress. We tell them to stop daydreaming (which is OK, really, just not while you're on the clock!) and resume work on the granary (12/60 completed). The warrior "I'll just stand here" works as door greeter at the city gates. Currently, there is a barbarian warrior just outside the city limits. Maybe they're coming for the swap meet...
To the east of Butterfly, we have a warrior (Mercy Killing) and a pair of workers, appearantly working on a road from Chaos to Butterfly. They are having quite an Effect on the countryside. There are a few other warriors (of various names) standing on hills to the north, east, and south of our borders. We leave them be. Qin Shi Huang has a pair of cities to our south. It must be cold there on the tundra. We should take him some hot cocoa the next time we visit.
Our treasury has a fortune of nine gold saved away and 80% of our income is going to the researchers in Chaos. Surely such a large percentage going into R&D will be unheard of until the Dot Com boom due to start two millenia from now. Those researchers, however, are researching how to fire sharp, pointy sticks at a distance (Archery, no progress). Unaccepable. We encourage them to resume work on the Alphabet (5 turns remaining). We'll need letters if we're going to be building more libraries. And we'll need something to teach in grade school.
Surprisingly, we are not at war with anyone. Has the peace of Minion the First truely lasted this long? We're still under the Slavery civic, but again, we won't be enforcing the policy.
IBT (450BC): The barbs visiting Butterfly are escorted from the swap meet for being drunk and disorderly. Stand Here is bruised in the scuffle, but his workman's comp will take care of his hospital bill (no hospitals yet? Well, I guess that 9 gold in the treasury is safe then!) Stand takes a first-aid course instead (promoted to Medic I).
Turn 1 (425BC): The two workers group up and work on the road to Butterfly together. Mercy acts as chaperone. The warrior north of Chaos named Light of (something) moves farther north to check for a new city site.
Turn 2 (400BC): Workers work. Warriors move.
Turn 3 (375BC): Light reaches a hilltop north of the jungle north of Chaos where he has a good view of pigs and stone. There's rice farther to the north and a large lake right there. This would be a nice place to settle. We put Light on Sentry duty for now.
IBT: St. Augustine's Most Advanced Civilizations. We didn't even make the list.
Turn 4 (350BC): The granary is completed in Chaos. We resume work on the walls. They're not bunkers, but they'll do for now.
The workers finish the road to Butterfly. Another hundred years or so and the borders will expand so we can mine the copper just east of town and the gold just west of town. We decide to go ahead and mine and road the hill to the southwest for now (since we cannot yet chop the jungle directly to the west).
IBT: We've entered the Classical Era! Horray!
Turn 5 (325BC): We now have the Alphabet. To better contemplate our newfound knowledge, be begin research on Meditation (4 turns).
Most everyone is Cautious towards us. Except for Peter. He's still Annoyed about that "war" so very long ago. Qin is our neighbor, so we go see if he'd like to gossip about the latest discoveries with us. He has Meditation and Archery and Iron Working, but we know nothing that he doesn't. So, we start at the bottom of the list and work our way up...
Peter will give us Polytheism and Archery for the Alphabet. We figure we owe him one, so we accept and give him the better end of the deal.
Mao will trade Iron Working for Alphabet. He seems like a nice guy. We accept.
Kublai Khan will trade Meditation for Writing. This will save us 100 years (4 turns) of research! We accept.
Genghis doesn't even have Pottery yet. How can such a great man not yet know how to make decorative bowls? We give him Pottery in the interests of international relations. He looks very happy and grateful!
Catherine has Mathematics and doesn't have Mysticism or Alphabet, but she won't trade Mathematics with us. She's not very nice. We decide to move on.
Victoria has nothing to trade us but does not have Alphabet. She's doing a lot better than poor Genghis (who didn't even have pottery!), so we're not going to give the matriarch any free rides just yet. (Wow, did that ever sound bad!)
Elizabeth has Metal Casting but is stubbornly refusing to trade for Alphabet. We take our letters and go home.
Now that we know Meditations, we tell our eggheads (who also part-time as our chicken wranglers) to work on the Priesthood (3 turns) instead. Having people dedicated to thinking and meditating may lead to some useful things.
The workers outside Butterfly begin working on the mine.
Turn 6 (300BC): Business as usual.
IBT: Moses is born in a far away land.
Turn 7 (275BC): The mine is done. Workers quickly lay a road back to Butterfly.
Turn 8 (250BC): Priesthood enters the common consciousness. Literature (at 11 turns) seems like a good idea.
Our new Settler is ready in Theory. We start them on their trip north to join up with Light. A city on the north of the lake will have access to pigs, stone, and rice and would provide us a seaport.
We begin work on a new granary. And we notice that there is iron to the southeast of Theory. The workers ditch their escort and hustle off to Theory.
IBT: Peter comes asking for Open Borders. Of course, we accept. He, like the rest of the world, is now Cautious of us.
Turn 9 (225BC): Mercy begins heading north where he will hook up with Light and the Settlers. Workers continue towards Theory.
IBT: The borders of Butterly expand. We can now mine gold and copper.
Turn 10 (200BC): Workers are almost back to Theory. Mercy is in the northern jungles. The Settlers are a short distance east of them. Light awaits their arrival.
But what's this? Peter has an Archer and a Settler of his own headed towards the sweet spot on the northern bank of the lake! Oh well, if he gets their first, then that's fair.
Wrapup: Literature is due in 9. We now have 17 gold with +1 gpt. Everyone is Cautious towards us and we have Open Borders with everyone but Kublai Khan. There's an unhappy citizen in Chaos. We try sending them a fruit basket, but we have no bananas today.
