Charlemagne Emperor Cookbook!(EC)!! Let the games begin!!!

A more critical look at the new save:

Two things irk me about this save (and yes, I did vote for it ;))

1. No Literature? Nobody even has it....for the small beaker investment we could have had it a long time ago and even a lazy attempt at TGL would have succeeded. We also have a 10XP unit but can't build HE.

2. Partial researching Lib is a mistake. There is zero threat from the AI taking it right now. Those ~3000:science: could instead be invested in techs which will provide an immediate benefit. For example, the current 1793:science: invested in Liberalism could have been spent on Literature>Music (finishing next turn) which is three turns before Zara will finish it == free Great Artist for us. Also, beakers will start to decay after a certain amount of time (can't remember how long this is) so you need to remember to finish lib before that happens.

Minor nitpicks:
Teohuiacan should have been razed and resettled 1N for a much better city.

Mainz 1S would have made a fantastic production city.

EDIT:
Just noticed a third irksome thing. SB is in WFYABTA mode?? Gaaahhh that sucks. Looks like you traded for a bunch of cheap techs earlier - sometimes it's better to just research those on your own (Fishing, priest, archery?!, etc) Zara and Hanni don't want to trade (not sure why) and the others hate us, which means we have no trading partner at the moment.

Note: Sorry, this isn't meant to be overly critical. I'm having trouble adjusting to a play style different from my own .

I remember a discussion about it a long time ago. It might have been true on Vanilla but it doesn't on BtS as far as I remember/experienced.

Congradulations to Gumbolt. Will play right now, was looking for something to do.

@Dual Beakers don't decay, hammers do though.

@Snow Haven't looked at your save, but why not join this round, use Gumbolt's save. This cookbook has helped alot of people jump up to emperor and beyond. Our fearless map maker is now trying Deity.

OK i took your advice MJG playing to 1100AD.
Spoiler :

My tech was finish Liberalism with free Nationalism > Printing Press > Economics > Astronomy (2 GS) > Gunpowder < Chemistry.
Economics gave the GM and sent him to Carthage for 2.2k gold!
I managed to make Sitting Bull mad. He won't talk to me anymore. I suspect someone bribed him as we were good buddies.

Used the 1 swordsman to take out the barb city and settle that. Check out those beakers! :)

To 1100AD
Spoiler :

Wasn't a huge fan of this save, mostly because it seems that asides from racing to lib as fast as possible, the other saves had better city development and placement. Oh well, maybe my heart wasnt in this one but here's what I did.
Basically I teched basically everything but lib and got a heap of GP's in the process. Got the Glib up in Aachen and then proceeded to move the cap to Vienna. Picked up taj with the GE (self researched nat). Then switched to bureau+merc (gotta love merc+rep) Researched all the pre-reqs for rifling and nabbed that with lib. Just popped a Gartist for another GA, plan on switching to nat+theo for a drafting spree. But i really can't be bothered going to war...
Civ4ScreenShot0028-1.jpg

Also i settled that island city out of curiosity and found this
Civ4ScreenShot0029.jpg

who made this map?:crazyeye:

Anyway guys let me know how you think i'm going...

Played til 1500AD Kinda forgot to get a 1100AD report.:(

Spoiler :

Pretty much started teching backfill techs before I finished Lib. I could have delayed this alot longer, but wanted to get to war asap. Finished Lib in about 1180AD and took rifling. Got GM from economics and sent to Nidras for 2850Gold. Used that to deficit research. That let me start to build Cav. I declared war on Justian at some point and capitulated him and his vassal Zara. Kremlin is due in 3 turns. WP being built in Prague. Still mass producing Cav. Starting to make airships also to go after Roosey. I'm teching towards AL. Only hurdle in this game will be SB. Has rifles already but pleased with us. Was thinking heading towards Mass media to a UN win but domination is more fun. Planning to Capitulate Roosey with Cav then Head towards Hannibal or SB with Infrantry and artillary. Only worry there is Roosey could vassal to SB.

@ snow

Spoiler :

Quick glance at save, few things.

Try using the GE in Prague to complete the Taj for free GA. Also try to get 6 universities up and build OU in capital. This will help research alot.

Will take longer look tomorrow and might find few more things. Glad to see you joining this round. Also can play til 1500AD. I forgot to post brief report for 1100AD.

Need your save!
Whoops, sorry I added it now. Am I correct in presuming that I may continue to 1500AD before the next round of voting? (if its not game over by then...) Although i wouldn't mind some comments, i'm not sure if i lost focus or not.

@bobbyboy29 - general comment
Spoiler :
Preventing your cities from growing isn't the best plan out there unless you need extra science right away. The math is always with growing first then working hammer tiles or more scientists for total outcome. A rule of thumb is to aim at +6 food for growing, although you can always aim for more/less depending on your :)-cap which is quite high in some cities right now.

Here's up to 1100 AD for the critique.

Spoiler :
I delayed Lib so I could pick up Military Tradition with it. Then went for engeneering to head for Chemistry and steel. Turned a couple cities into gun pumps even destroying the two flood plane village and town in Yue Chi. Took the barbarian city in the south when sitting bull sent a force to try and snatch it.

Im the AP leader and passed on an offer to vote for the win by diplomacy I just don't like that kind of victory.

Got another great spy so I am using it to explore for a bit to plan for my attack on sitting Bull. I wonder if it would be better to pass through my ally to kill someone else like Justin maybe and preserve some good diplomacy?

I will play to 1500 AD tomorrow I,m off to bed. Critiques on my attempt to get ready for war appreciated, thanks.

Ambro 152BPT if you remove wealth. strong science overall. Why mainz and Strasbourg? Mainz is a wasteland city that does not even pay for itself. Strasbourg is small in size and will take time to reap its rewards. On plus side the city with the 2 fish will have 2 high commerce resources soon.

Mainz was indeed a misjudgment. I'd chucked it down to run off the 2 food resources, hook up the fur for happy and just run specialists, however I totally mistimed the whip and am running two 1 hammer muppets at the moment. Would have got the happy resource quite shortly anyway so the city was a waste of time in the end.

Will probably take Gumbolts save to completion now. Shouldn't take very long I think.

1100AD Report

Spoiler :

- Too bad the HE was not already in Prague. In Caste System, it was slower to get Prague setup as the unit pump it already was in my game. It's rocking now and pumping units to get the power rating up and possibly go to war with someone.

-The diplo situation was far worse - at least in my view - than when I last played, but at least avoided unnecessary wars or DOW. Zaqob was my main trading partner with a couple of key trades with Hannibal, who has now changed religions after an unsuccessful battle with the Rag.

- From the start of this session I backtracked on tech a bit, foregoing early Lib to ensure I get the Great Library in quick. I also went for Optics and won Circum easily. Traded for Engineering to get the Landschekt (?) online fwiw.

- I actually built walls and castles in my cities simply for the fact that they were finishing in 1 to 2 turns, plus this upped my power rating a bit which was good since I was still low on units. Castles have to be the biggest BS building in the game - it obsoletes almost immediately, but at least the defense is there.

- Ran a golden age to change to Merc and to run US for the GA duration to buy up some buildings to get cities developing quicker. Switch back to Rep at right before GA ended.

- Not sure why we were not in Bureau already

- National Epi is in. Built UofS. Currenlty building Taj after trading Edu for Nat with Zaqob, but will probably fail.

- I have three Great People parked in Aachen that I haven't decided on yet. One merchant from get Econ first and a couple of GS's popped. I'd like to save two to run another GA to switch civics, but not sure if it's better to use the 2 GSs to get Printing Press now. Should I send the GM on a trip, settle him, or save for GA?

- Interesting stuff going on to the North West. Just what is our friendly map maker doing up there. I haven't been able to fully explore that strange area this round due to lots of barb ships, but I think it may even spell something.

- I have Military Tradition up as a placeholder for now. Thought it might be good to go with Curaissers to put SB in his place, but not sure if this is best. I could switch into Nationalism/Theo/Vass and pump out a bunch of units. It's getting pretty close for Charlie to lay some beatdown.

- Lastly, I'm thinking about sending a settler (in build queue behind work boat) to one of the islands to the west to get a foothold - it will go quick

- Teohitican or whatever is in a problematic location. I think it should have been razed. Prevents a good city to the west and possible border issues to the east. I would have settled a new city on the desert plot

Perhaps missing literature was a mistake. End of day my science rate was the best of all the saves submitted even without it. HE might of helped. I suspect the science is due to the mids. HE in a lot of the saves submitted was not in the optimal city in my opinion due to lack of food and close proximity to our capital and poor production.

Once Moia statue is built this or the city below makes a great HE site. With work shops its even better. I did miss the second fish resource when placing the southern city. Once you pop a golden age HE or Glib would be built quite quickly really.

i do get a bit obsessed with liberalism research but I just wanted to see how early i could grab it.

Overall I left my save in a position where many strategies were quite possible.

@ max

Spoiler :
Yue-chi and Prague are not growing. Also with HE going into Prague might want to farm over the cottages or workshops.

Hook up the deer in our borders for another resource to trade. Hannibal has spices.

But the biggest is getting OU up asap. I see you have 4 of 6 needed and other 2 due in 9 turns or less. Your not running many specialists so I would go slavery here. Although in Representaion might want to try and run few more. I would go slavery to whip up some infrastucture though.

@ lymond

Spoiler :

You only have 1 University online so far and it's not even in capital. Gettong 6 to build OU would really bump up your tech rate.

I would trade banking to Zara and Just for thier gold. 890gold total here. Justinian is teching it now anyway and with zara as vassal he would get from Justinian.

Get deer hooked up for another resource to trade. Alos I see few resource trades you can make.

Set up Prague for unit pumping. Farm over the cottages if need be. If making this HE city Do the best to maximize hammers and food.

Mainz is stagnated, try farming there also to grow
