So, do you like this variant?

Wiki entry on Chess960

Chess960 on chess.com

I'm enjoying playing it online recently, I hadn't played it since 1998 before the last few weeks. When I first started playing chess seriously in college my friend taught it to me (but we played without castling), we played it a dozen times or so & then pretty much forget about it.

Sorry, I edited my OP. It's a chess varient which is exactly the same as regular chess but with random (within certain parameters such as rooks must be on either side of the king & bishops must be on opposite colors).

Sample game. :D

This could be fun, but I still haven't decided whether to upgrade to premium on chess.com :undecide: therefore being able to join a tournament.

Well you can still play non-tourney 960 games for free. :)

Also, all you have to do to get a free year's gold membership is win the CFC tourney. :D

I asked one of the Staff at chess.com if they're gonna have any "official" chess960 tournaments. Non-premium players can still join as many official tournaments as they want, just only one user-created tournament at a time.

That's really interesting - I suppose for a newish player, playing that way would encourage a more positional analysis.

Intriguing indeed :hmm:

To paraphrase Fischer, it removes centuries of opening theory and the undue influence of preparations before tournaments and matches. And it's not just positional, there are tactical considerations too. For example the bishop moves that pin knights in the standard opening position might not exist at all in a 960 game. Also in 960 there can be totally undefended squares.

I like this variant so far. It lets me use my brain more, without having to worry about centuries of "this move is better and has been proven so over and over again" sort of comments.;)

Who else is a member of the 960 group and wants to play a 960 game? I have room for one more game, and I'd prefer it to be a 960 game.

I'm a former member of the 960 group but quit because it was easier to do that than configure my alerts! Do I count? (Tenna on Chess.com)

I've made some embarassing blunders in my first 5 games of chess960, and as a result my 960 rating is less then 1000. I have to climb out of this mess...

You sure do, Tomoyo. Want me to challenge you or vise versa?

You probably have to challenge me as you are currently not accepting any challenges! ;)
