Then Kill them:p

And verily, with Cian Odynalmos being voted out of office due to his inverted genitalia, the Council of Elders chose a new leader, one too grand to be kicked in the balls by a mere peasant, and that leader was..... the Truth!

The Green Dragon: Chapter One

Five hundred feet to the far west
Is your best guess
To find the home of the great creature
Known simply as Dal Pást

The sun grazed the far edge of the woods, slowly setting a fire behind them. The populace of Elmad had begun the task of cleaning the city up once again after Qua Pada. The Third Festival, occurring some three days ago, was still freshly remembered in their minds. They remembered the flowing drink, the beating rhythms, and the climax of the festivals. The blinding lights and the hesitance of all noise within the city, even the animals seemed to know of the Silent Rule. The Festival was well known throughout the Elorian lands.

Every year, once during each Festival, the Elders would come from their posts and select one member of the general population to join with them. Usually you have to be born into the Elders or the Blue Clothed, but it was possible for a young Elorian to join the highest ranks if they were chosen to be among the inductees. The Blue Clothed, during the climax of the Festival, would venture out from the top of the tree and make their way down the Spiral Steps to the near bottom tier. From there they would head toward the sacred site, where the Five Inductees would be standing. The Senior Elder, usually the most respected member of the community, would step forward to the Chosen One and then, after another blinding light, the entire group would have disappeared.

What the population didn’t know was what occurred after the Choosing. The Group, made up of Five Elders and the Chosen, would be transported to the Sacred Grounds through the given power of Edoria. High above the ground there was the Sacred Ground, a large slab of marble rock suspending by the thick branches underneath it. No one was ever sure how it had gotten to the top, but most assured it as a gift from Edoria. On top of the rock, unknown to the general public, was a small city. Within the city-upon-a-city, the High Elders and the Blue Clothed lived in harmony with each other.

The two groups secretly ran the entire city below them from their high perch. The High Elders truly ran the city, passing laws and keeping peace within the greater city. Should an Elorian choose to break a law, they would be brought to the upper branches while an Elder would descend and meet them within the Courthouse. The Blue Clothed, a religious sect in control of the cities’ temples and holy sites, were the opposites of the High Elders. Their names came from the blue robes they wore, used to hide their image from the public. When a Chosen One was brought back to the Sacred Ground, they were given the option of either joining the High Elders or the Blue Clothed.

This year’s Chosen One, a young male, now stood with that choice. Easa stood, numb and confused, within the holding room of the Higher Council. Nothing was known of the Sacred Ground in the lower city, and when a Chosen One was brought into it, it was a normal reaction for them. A second later a door was swung open and an old female walked into the room, smiling broadly.

“Aaaaah…..” She spoke kindly, beginning to eye the boy over. “…….You’re the One they brought in this year, aren’t you?” She mused. The boy shook his head yes, shivering slightly. “I bet you’re wondering what you’re doing up here, huh?” She said with a slight laugh. “Every year the same thing- a sniveling child with no clue about what really goes on. It would really ease my work if they started tell all of you what really goes on up here, you know?”

“Huh?” The boy said, a confused look springing onto his face.

“Don’t worry kid- everything will be explained in a few minutes, just wait for Sare to get here.” She said with a chuckle. “Late as usual…” She said before trailing off. The next thirty minutes passed in total silence, the boy shivering where he stood while a frown continued to grow larger with each passing minute. Finally, after those thirty minutes, another figure slowly staggered into the room- an old male dressed in loose white robes. The female immediately broke out into a kept-rage. “Where in the name of Edoria have you been?” She shrieked.

“Calm down Rejea- you should know better than to take Edoria’s name in vain.” The male muttered with a look of seriousness on his face for a second. “I had to attend to a…….meeting” He explained with a smile creeping onto his face.

“Well, while you were out enjoying yourself, the young one here has had to wait!” She scolded. “And don’t tell me what to do, you’re no Blue Clothed.”

“I didn’t forget Rejea- what do you think my meeting was about?” The male snapped back. “I’ve gotten confirmation from the lower offices that they had made their decision.”

“And?” The female asked, the serious look coming back onto her face.

“Later.” The male muttered, suddenly turning back to the younger male. “Hello there, I’m Sare- Official scribe for the High Elders!” The man chirped, face breaking out into a smile. The boy nodded, having finally gotten rid of the shivering. “My friend over here is Rejea, my counterpart for the Blue Clothed.” The female gave a nod in agreement. “Soooo…where do you want to start with this one Rejea?” The male asked after a minute.

“How about the beginning?” The male said with a dry grin.

“Enough Sare.” The female muttered turning to the boy. “Greetings Easa. We have a lot to tell you in such a little time, so we have to keep moving. First off, we have to correct all of these lies you’ve put in your head all these years. Let’s start with the Choosing- unlike what you’ve been told, the Chosen is not killed or mutilated. Rather the Chosen is ascended to the Sacred Ground where they receive training to become either a High Elder or a Blue Clothed- usually. The Sacred Ground is not, as told below, a barren wasteland but rather a smaller city where the councils live. ”

The boy stared numbly at her. “…….That’s why they’re always coming down from above…..”The boy muttered, as if a thought was dawning on him.

Sare spoke up this time. “One someone has been Chosen, they’re brought up here through power given by Edoria. Once here they are briefed, like we’re doing with you, on the real truths about the lands. After this, you would have been informed of your choice to either join the High Elders or the Blue Clothed. Then you’d have gone to either group’s building and received the training required for the position.”

The boy suddenly piped up. “……You’re talking in past tense.” He said, a concerned look coming on his face.

The female fidgeted where she stood. “Yeah……about that…….”

The older male spoke up once more. “You would have, had it not been for a decree from Joining Rivers [1]. They asked for this year’s Chosen One to be sent to the capital to receive a task from the High Guide.”

“Wouldn’t it make more sense for someone who has been trained to go?” The boy asked hopefully.

“They were quite adamant on having this year’s Chosen One attend Ath’ane to be given a special mission for Edoria- and they want you there within the week. But first you have to attend a special meeting in front of the Councils.” The female said, standing up from her seat. “Now come on, we’re already late.”

[1]"Joining Rivers"- Ath'ane.
