Civ 4 Game of the Year Winner!

This fact is that while a lot of people are having issues with the game, many more aren't. The mainstream user is less critical of Civ IV because of two simple reasons:

1. The mass-market consumer doesn't get into meta-game concepts like whether or not helicopter gunships should have the ability to re-base, or the irrelevency of naval combat. They consequently have less to complain about.

2. The majority of people that own Civ IV have had very little trouble installing and running the game.

Yes, there are quite a few people on these boards with problems, but most of them came here to specifically complain and or get help with their issues. Many Civ IV players are completely unaware of these boards and have no interest in coming here.

Game of The Year? If you have problems running it then obviously the answer, for you, is "No." For most others, it is "Yes."

First I glad to see civ4 get GOTY instead of FEAR even though FEAR is a good game. First IIRC the last few years first person shooters have got TGOY; Half Life 2 last year and Call of Duty a year before that. So I'm gald to see something besides FPS get the award. Second anyone who design a game like FEAR which requires an up to date PC then put the game on 5 cd instead of one DVD don't deserve to win TGOY. If your pc is so old that it doesn't even have a DVD-rom then you need to FEAR this game won't run on your pc. :)

Since I voted for F.E.A.R. being GOTY I'll give you that one because I agree 100%. I think it's time for CDs to disappear. This mutliple disc-swapping crap is getting old.

I liked F.E.A.R. a lot till I finished it. I haven't had the urge to replay it.

You know a game is a classic when it's buggy as hell (almost unplayable) yet people still play it! :)

No way. Some of the Paradox games are barely playable out of the box. This had *minor* issues compared to some of those beasts.

And with their support levels falling lately, you can't trust them to fix it anymore. It's a shame.

Last night Gamespot named Civ 4 it's Strategy Game of the Year. Tonight, it goes firmly against FEAR for PC Game of the Year.

During the video of last night's awards, the reviewer said, "Civ 4 is the ultimate strategy game". I think the guys at Gamespot agree that Firaxis has made the best strategy game of all time (or at least, up til now)... Let's see how far their love for FEAR really goes. Smile

It surprised me; I thought a FPS would make #1. After all, FPS's are the most popular genre in the Western Hemisphere. Not that I wanted to see a FPS there. Congrats to Firaxis, Soren Johnson, and Sid!

I've had CTD's, graphic bugs, and the French Canadian poster. So I sent my crash reports to Firaxis through the error reporting tool; I bought a new graphics card (old GeForce FX5500, new GeForce 6200); and my English poster arrived in the mail a week ago. Before I was semi-satisfied, now I'm thoroughly pleased. It's my privilege to be content as much as yours to be unhappy. I hope your Civ experience starts looking up this new year. No one wants to waste US$50.

That's the big difference between Civ and most of the other games. You can't finish Civ. :)

Gamespot just announced the PC Game of the Year -

And it's Civ 4, not FEAR. :)

When people keep posting that "The Game Doesn't Work!", I wonder. I didn't have any issues right out of the box. The patch was "nice", but it didn't really do anything for me.

None of my friends had any issues right out of the box.

We play (obsessive) 5+ hour games 2-3 times a week.

So, perhaps the "IT IS BROXXORED" crowd should ask themselves what they did wrong instead of just thinking the game is broken?

No they shouldn't.

I play Civ4 on 3 different systems. Two of them are WAAAY beyond the recommended spec. It works great on one of them (but has suffered ctd's), and on another very similar spec it hangs quite a bit but runs fine unless you try the top end options. I'm willing to blame a faulty gfx card on the hangs though.

What I'm not willing to accept is a 2600+ Athlon XP with a 5700 FX graphics card playing the game like total shite. This is a system well above the minimum spec yet it cannot handle the standard options. Ok it plays, but it's unplayable. This is my mate's second pc, and the one I play the game on most often (because we like to play LAN vs the AI).

I haven't tried the new patch yet, but I will soon. If it doesn't address the problems with minimum reqs on the box then I'll be very unhappy. GOTY? You must be kidding. Any game with such severe playability issues shouldn't even be considered, and I don't care how good it is.

I do think Civ4 is a very good game which will get better with the patches, because that's what Civ3 was.

Which games?

And this is 2006, releasing Civ4 in the shape it was is just unaccpetable. But it doesn't matter, because I still played it regardless, at least tried. Just like most other people did.

According to the polls here most gamers ran the game just fine.

PC Game of the Year ... Gamespot, Gamespy, IGN... what an incredible achievement. Congrats again to Firaxis, for a truly amazing game that will stand the test of time.

Sorenism should be a religion now.

Hasn't anybody here heard of Resident Evil 4, God of War, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, and Ninja Gaiden Black?
