Typically we enforce a range of years to avoid horrific Eurocentrism with the designs; we've had the Age of Exploration and the Medieval Era before, both of which are nowadays typically thought of as basically Eurocentric concepts of periodization, but we were able to avoid this with a rough range of years.
For this time period, I constrained myself to 1700-1790, roughly the outline French historians often use for the French one. Of course, it's still good to keep in with the typical themes associated with the period, in order to prevent overlap and keep designs fresh, but I think isolationist Japan fits in nicely with "Enlightenment" periodization.
