Civ 5 representation of the world (with MAP)

I think it'd be better if you just plot the "start location" of each civilization, and see where most of the dots are. If you do so, then you'll notice there's a good concentration of dots in Europe.

I checked bismarks germany and a map of stalins russia and neither had control over poland on those maps, I was a little bit supprised about that myself but I did not question wikipedia :)

So let say that poland is coverd, then it is just scandinavia in europe that is empty, could be filled with the vikings

Well if you go back far enough I'm sure that alot of the Scandinavian population is made up of germanic/gothic tribes, it's all part of the big population movements going on for hundreds of years in northern europe so I guess that would cover Scandinavia as well. Also Viking descendants became the normands in France who in turn later invaded and conquered England, Vikings supposedly founded Kiev, there was even a Scandinavian/Northern people known as the Rus and so on..
These issues tend to get complicated like that.

The territory of Poland should still be Green (or most of it) due to being split between Russia and Germany at several points (assorted partitions, etc)

The point is that they cover basically the entire world

I don't think, that only "Bismarck's germany" or only "Stalin's russia" should be considered. Germany long time had parts of poland, and at this time, it was really considered being germany.
On the other hand there was never really a long time, when canadians really felt "english", or that mexicans really felt "spanish".

No, it should be covered by the ethiopian civilization using that standard.

Well I'll be darned if I am cast in the same lot as the Germans, although technically we are, considering anything in the northern wildernesses of C. Europe were all Germanic of some sort, according to the Romans :deadhorse:

Just saying you need to be careful when you start talking about which countries controlled/owned/influenced which parts of the world when you're trying to look at which parts are represented. Let's pretend England is in the game but India isn't, would we really accept that England claiming India as theirs during a period in history would satisfy players that India was represented in the game? Unlikely..

I think, this addresses the same point like what i've said above: It should also be thought of, if the people in that region felt represented by that country.

Germany had some of Prussia, and modern day Poland contains some of that Prussia/Germany/Poland.

Leads to endless confusion of you are descended from people who lived their.
