Civ 6 on E3?

For the most part I agree, but the combat animations are pretty cartoonish -- melee weapon hits cause giant explosions (which obscure much of the action), and tank hits cause target figures to fly wildly backwards and do somersaults.

How much you want to bet the Samurai pull a Dragon Ball Z, leap 1000ft into the air, their swords glow white, then they come crashing down on the enemy tile leaving a smoking crater?

Fair point. While the Civ series has always been a bit whimsical, those need some polishing, I agree. :)

Anyway, considering the really well done Cleopatra animation, I have hope.

Thank God I play with all animations disabled. I have so much less to worry about! :p (In Civ V, I actually played every game in strategic view after a while, as it made the map much easier to read once you got used to all the symbols.)

Has there been any news of the strategic view returning, btw? I'm a bit worried that my computer might not be up to scratch to run the game in the normal view, as least not when it comes to the late game. And it will likely be the clearer option, like it was in Civ V.

That is very impressive. Whether you like the character style or not, I think you have to say that's really superb character animation.

I concur, sirs. The animation of the leaders is very good. It makes Civ V leaders look like stiff marionettes.

I believe that was confirmed.

Yes. Although we haven't seen what it looks like, you can see the button for it (with the hexes icon) in the lower left of the videos.

Cool; thanks for the info (you too, Eagle Pursuit). Makes sense tbh, as it'd make a lot of people happy (mostly those with bad computers) for relatively little effort (compared to the 'real' graphics, making the strategic view must feel like a holiday! :D).

Indeed. There is an immense upgrade there. :)

I don't think the animations are Disney style. In fact, they look extremely well done and polished. The graphics aren't childish, either. As Ed Beach said, there is a lot more detail in them. They really seem to come alive.

The game looks a lot more like cIV than the rather sterile looking Civilization 5. Colour me impressed. :)

Actually, to be fair, if I were to select two words to describe Disney Animation Studio's style, it would be "well-done" and "polished." ;) But I do concur that Civ6's style is nothing like Disney's. I love the world graphics. The leader graphics are going to take some getting used to, but they will give the leaders a lot of personality. I can already see Cleopatra being an over-the-top drama queen--which suits her. ;)

True. Pixar animation puts out some truly amazing stuff, for example. Disney-like might actually be a compliment. :p

I think the original comment was meant to mock the graphics by calling them Disney-like aka something a child would like and not for serious grown ups. I don't happen to agree with that assertion but it's a free forum. :)

I think the leader graphics/animations for Civ VI will end up being far superior to Civilization 5 as 65-93% of communication is nonverbal. ie. hand gestures, facial expressions, etc.

I’m not in favor of gore or bloody realism, but the current animations appear too whimsical considering the nature of the acts being represented, IMO.

Combat could be portrayed in a darker, dirtier and grittier manner with civilians fleeing from districts or buildings as the bombs drop and being engulfed by the explosions; victorious troops finishing their conquests looking exhausted or injured as the case may be.

That said, overall, I think the game looks great.

The static backgrounds are a huge step back compared to 5. I despise these lackluster painted images so much, I seriously have not even noticed leader animations until I read this thread. I must have been to busy cringing while watching the video's the first few times.

One small step forward, one terribly huge step back to me. Civ 6, the leaders use more hand gestures and verbal communication to be more human like...but these leaders are now standing infront of ugly flat paintings. The loss of scenery kills the immersion to me, to the point where the improved character movement means absolutely nothing.

These new "big personality" feel plain in boring infront of their static images.

Think of Monty in 5. Lots of nonverbal arm flailing and an amazing background (flickering flames/skulls). Lose all that extra atmosphere and I could care less how much the leaders move. Might as well be static .

Are you kidding!?! Aside from some flickering fire and the occasional fluttering flag or a single bird, the backgrounds in Civ V may as well have been static images. The sound effects brought the scenes to life more than the backgrounds.

The painted leader backgrounds don't bother me at all. The player's focus is drawn to the character in the foreground, where it should be.

To me, it's not what so ever. The first and only thing I see if how terrible the background looks. I don't even care to look towards the leader.

yeah some leaders had little to nothing going on in their backgrounds, which was unfortunate. Atleast the art style fit the leader to make him/her actually look like they are placed in the world somewhere. Not magically floating above a poorly done painting.

Siam for example, nothing going on besides a little bit of water movement in the pond. Yet Rakem seems to fit perfectly in the tranquil world and manage to stick out well. (More needed to be like Harold!)

Sound effects..thats a good point though. Something else we will be losing with static painted images.

Sound effects could easily come later in the development cycle.

I wish the backgrounds and outfits would change with time. To see modern buildings stretching across the game board and to be in tense negotiations with Shaka (or some other leader) over the incursion of his nuclear submarines while he wears a loin cloth and stands in front of a row of huts is beyond silly.
