I did seem to notice that the fortifications have to be from the era. I would start with only like a plus 3 bonus from it but then as i built medieval fornication for Viet, it exploded. Synergies really well with Vietamese actually.

Maybe it was a graphical glitch or something related to viet because when I added it I swear science only went up by like 3.

Screenshot was mine, and it was for Ming; their great wall is ageless fortification, hence the nice bump.

I've only played them once but found they were great fun. It's one of these civs that feels it has a nice coherent theme, and added to the fact antiquity warfare is probably the most exciting, it makes for a great design.
