CIV Gold!

The "Nature of Man" pack is ready for release, but I'm waiting on 1 final art change. A LH has a black hat instead of a brown hat. I wanted to get that released first, before continuing on 5.0, but I have already started on completing 5.0. If there will be no similar art issues 5.0 could be ready for release at the end of february.

i think the hat problem is either an alpha or a materials problem. I sent that to wyz so I'm not sure how far he got. usually the problem arises when you mix shaded with nonshaded LHs.

Ekmek, thanks for the explanation. Wyz has been off the radar last week. We both go in "stealth-mode" from time to time and CIV Gold mostly progresses when we're both active at the same time. Have you sent him a revised Duvallier? If so, could you sent it to me?

Duvalier? I think we might need him. The Capo's making a Haiti civ, and if it's good, maybe we might add him.

Here's a preview of Papa Doc. The hat color is still black and will be changed to brown.

Hi guys,

Sorry, yeah, it's been a busy week and I've had to put a few things on hold.

But I should be able to get back to work on things tomorrow. As for NoM, maybe we should release with the "broken" Duvalier and see if we can't patch it later. If it's a shader compatibility issue, then I'll simply try that and see if it fixes things. I had the exact same problem with my Kangxi LH so maybe I can't kill two birds with one stone.

As for 5.0, cyberxkhan is just working in on a batch of XML files and I need to shore up some artwork.

I wasn't able to get to the XML last weekend, but I don't think its too heavy a load, so hopefully I'll be able by this next weekend (or else Wyz will have my head, right? :)).

CIV Gold: The Nature of Man now available.

CIV Gold: The Nature of Man

CIV Gold: The Nature of Man is a standalone add-on to CIV IV: Beyond the Sword that adds many of the most reviled leaders in history.

The ongoing to debate on whether Firaxis should add leaders like Hitler or Mussolini is unlikely to be resolved at any point in the near future. CIV Gold: NoM gives you the opportunity to add them (and many others) in order to construct scenarios relevant to our history.

As with any Civilization game, mod or add-on, it is a chance to re-create or re-write the story of our lives.

CIV Gold: NoM adds the following leaders:

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - Persia
Empress Dowager Cixi - China
Kim Jong Il - Korea
Richard III - England
George W. Bush - America
Adolph Hitler - Germany
Pol Pot - Khmer
Vercingetorix - Celts
Caligula - Rome
Hussein - Babylon
Putin - Russia

In addition, 4 custom civs have been added to showcase their leaders:

Chile - adds Augusto Pinochet
Congo - adds Mobutu Sese Seko
Italy - adds Benito Mussolini
West Indies - adds Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier

To install, simply double-click the exe file and ensure the path for Beyond the Sword is correct.

Q: Why include such...

A: We've all heard the answers and both sides of the debate. For me, it was simply to allow for scenario building with greater accuracy and to allow players to challenge themselves against men and women they would like to defeat.

Q: I through we were going to see Idi Amin and the Timurids, among others?

A: For the sake of expediency, Amin and the Kitara Empire, along with the Timurids and Huns, will be available in the upcoming CIV Gold 5.0.

Q: So this is a standlone, not an add-on?

A: This version of NoM is a standalone mod and does not add to Gold 4.0. Gold 5.0 will, however, have NoM content included.

A: Come on, George Bush in the same group as Pol Pot??

Q: Some will complain about adding Bush, Putin and Richard the III alongside Pinochet, Pol Pot and Caligula. The intent was simply to add some balance in terms of geography and era.

KNOWN ISSUES:

- there is an error where Mobutu's teeth appear pink
- minor flickering in the Mussolini leaderhead

There are always far more people to thank than I can keep track of, but while Firebras and myself composed the core team for this project, we were heavily reliant on the work of Ekmek (who contributed a tonne of artwork), Refar, C. Roland, NikNaks, mourndraken, GarretSidzaka and pencilgod.

Any questions or comments can be made in the CIV Gold forum at Civfanatics.

Umm... why is Saddam in Babylon? He's an Arab Leader. Babylon doesn't exist for Saddam!

Can I say that I love the Richard and Duvalier leaderheads?

Here's some diplotext for Pinochet:

First Contact:
Hello, my name is [OUR_NAME]. People have called me an evil dictator but I believe they only say that because I have a sour face. You don't believe them, right?

Refuse to Talk:
I can tell you're about to lie to me by looking at your eyes. Don't bother trying to talk to me.

No Peace:
Why would I forgive the one who tried to kill us and destroy the [OUR_CIV_ADJ] Fatherland?

Friendly Greeting:
Hello, [CT_NAME]. How about we exterminate some communists? I'll give you my biggest rifle!

Annoyed Greeting:
How are you doing, marxist pig?

Demand Tribute Weaker:
I don't usually approve of redistribution of wealth, but it's for the good of the economy, no?

Demand Tribute Equal:
Hand it over, [CT_NAME], or I'll haul your corpse far away from [CT_CIV_SHORT] and dump it into the ocean!

Demand Tribute Stronger:
I've practically wiped [OUR_CIV_SHORT] clean of marxists. I can wipe [CT_CIV_SHORT] clean of [CT_CIV_ADJ] people if you don't pay me.

Saddam saw himself as a modern day nebuchanezzar and was rebuilding the city of babylon. so i think that justifies it :)

Eh, that's like saying Mussolini is Roman!

He was still trying to establish an Arab empire for Iraq, and would certainly have thought of himself as an Arab. I think he'd be better for the Arabs ultimately, plus isn't Baghdad an Arab city in Civ?

EDIT: Although, I am going to make a Nasser LH, and personally I'd use it for the Arabs, but I could see people using him as an Egyptian leader.

Regarding Saddam as Babylonian, he just seemed like a better fit there than in Arabia. The truth is that Hussein's Iraq really isn't a great fit anywhere. Baghdad is Arabian, but geographically Iraq and Babylon are smack-dab overlaid. Of course, we could say that with Mussolini, as noted, etc. etc.

It probably works best with a separate Iraq, just as Iran is probably best separated from Persia, rather than forcing Khomeini with Darius.

We'll see what we can do for 5.0, but the scope of that one has already gotten out of hand.

A few complaints...

1. Saddam Hussein of Babylonia doesn't really make that much sense. Better to have him be part of Arabia or as a standalone Iraq civ.
2. Not that many leaders, and the selection seems kinda. Odd. Table, chair, lamp, banana. I understand that you're going for evil leaders but you've got at least three that don't fit the bill. I'd say four but... Caligula's hard to debate on. Chances are he was just an average Roman emperor (which I guess would still qualify for being rather evil). Even then, though, wouldn't Nero be a better choice?
Maybe for England, instead of Richard III, you could have used Cromwell?
I can't really think of an American leader that'd fit in with the other evil leaders. We have crooks (Nixon, Grant), people who initiated unpopular wars (Hoover, JFK, both Bush's), etc. Nothing usually that evil, though. ...Well, depending on who you ask. I think each president has angered another country in some way.

Iraq is a part of Arabia. Arabia in the game refers to the Arab Peninsula, everything from the border of Turkey to the border with Iran/Persia, all the way south to Yemen and Oman, and spreading across Northern Africa all along the coast to Morocco.

Aren't you forgetting Egypt here ? I never envisioned Arabaia stretching all the way to Morocco, I agree on Arabia being all the peninsula and up to Persia (their in-game neighbours).

I did mention Egypt, part of North Africa, but Morocco is an Arab country. In fact, Marrakesh and Casablanca are cities in the Arab Civ.
