I just got done reading the long list of AI stupidities, for Civ II, and I thought they were hilarious. I thought, since Civ IV is coming up, and some of us (not me) need some good reasons to go to Civ IV, we could make a list of Civ III AI stupidities. Not saying the Civ IV AI has no stupidities, but they definately have less. I'll kick it off:

01: The AI makes demands for techs when you are done killing off their neigbor and you have a ton of units on their doorstep.

02: The AI pillages roads/irrigation as it's about to capture a city nearby.

:viking: War to you :viking:

I'd say "peace to you" but that's an insult, IMHO

3) The AI demands techs from you just after they sent their workers into your territory.

4) The AI has a SOD ready to pour down into another's territory, until their ally clogs up the choke point with a single unit. Then the SOD goes all the way home.

5) The AI is far more important then you. No Right of Passage? It doesn't need one! It's units will simply waltz across your territory. Because they are just that much better then you. But once you inch a toe into thiers, it's get out or declare war.

Picky, picky picky.

6) Once ago, I got a few artillery captured. But when they capture your units, they let them get back home all by themselves...

The AI will always make long wars and demand techs, maps and gold. Even if they are under a government such as Republic and plagued by war weariness.

That happens frequently in C3C. No gpt deals until the Industrial Ages.

- How often does the AI use armies? I haven't seen one since PTW (when they were, oddly enough nigh useless).

- The AI also doesn't like attacking armies unless the army is seriously wounded and/or outdated.

In some cases, that second one might be smart, like if two neighbors are at with each other and you. But usually... ('nuff said)

10) The AI doesn't have the common sense to double and treble the capital's defenses if the capital just HAPPENS to be 5 squares away from another, more powerful nation.

11 - the AI sends an attack force and declares war because it sees a couple of border cities with no troops in them, disregarding the fact that you have about 100 cavalry well within range and he is attacking with swordsmen!

14. If the AI's capital is the middle of their huge empire, it will still have 15 units guarding it, most obsolete (sp?). This number increases as the difficulty level goes up.

This isn't necessarily stupid. Killing the roads denies that city any resources it could. This causes happiness to go way down, and can hinder building defensive units. Also drives the pop down, making the city less likely to flip when you take it over.

In Conquests, armies are somewhat broken because of the extra movement point. The AI tries to match up units in the army with like movement point units, which is why when you do see the AI use armies, it's in weird combinations, like a rifleman and a knight. Or a knight and two calvary.

Just a couple of thoughts....

I mean, the AI clears all defenders, and it's about to walk in to their enemy's city (mine, if I'm caught off-guard (rarely)) then they pillage mining right next to the city they're about to capture. THAT is the definition of dumb.

This actually happened to a city I founded. I didn't have time to make adequate defences.

Well, that's different. The AI is known for not making good choices on how to improve the city tiles.

My favorite...

AI has something in the neighborhood of 210 Infantry divisions across their enormous continent, but I sieze three cities in a lightning attack, holding them with little more than some bloody guys on crutches but the AI takes a peace deal even though it could blow my defenders over with a huff or a puff.

(Of course, once I build airports in the cities, I stream in Modern Armor by the C-5 full...then when I demand that his massive stacks of Infantry leave my territory, he once again acts stupidly and declares war.)
