Civ IV Reviewed On IGN!!! (you Will Be Very Happy! :) :) :)

Obviously great news on the review. If the other major sites concur on the high marks, chances are very good that Civ4 will be a huge success. :)

The reviewer is simply wrong about the "tank beats spearman" phenomenon, however. The odds of a spear beating a tank are considerably less than one in a trillion (it's actually (.125)^35 power, for the curious). The only way for a spear to beat a tank is for the spear to have tons of bonuses from terrain/promotions, or for the tank to be injured going into the battle (more likely, both of them). My guess is that the reviewer didn't understand that, and thus drew an inaccurate conclusion. Ah well, minor gripe at best. :)

So strength affects chance to hit, damage done, AND damage you can take? (so the effective power of a unit is strength cubed?) meaning a tank could be expected to handle about 350 spearman without healing.

Few extra calcs. % of strength 10 unit surviving [using the model of all three factors depending on strength]
v. 11 unit 31%
v. 12 unit 27%
v. 13 unit 8%
v. 14 unit 6%
v. 15 unit 3%
v. 16 unit 2%
v. 18 unit 0.2%
v. 20 unit 0.05%

So a few points of strength are worth a LOT.

There was one feature mentioned in that video that I didn't know about already: the clock with alarm. That's great, now I can find out what time it is without even having to take my eyes off the screen, a sorely needed feature for such an addictive game. ;)

I'm a bit concerned about that knight killing the chopper though, hopefully it's a VERY rare occurence.

o gosh... the more good things I read about it... the more I'm preoccupied with getting it on the exact date of release :-D I'm so childish... I thought I was pass this after SC4...

Guess I'm gonna be driving all around LA like I did for SC4...

My ONLY real issue with the possibility (however rare) of a knight defeating a helicopter gunship is simply this little thing called 'ALTITUDE' :mischief:. Ultimately, knights and other pre-gunpowder units should not even be able to hit a unit flying that high. I think this result is merely a 'quirk' of the intermediate state in which the gunship exists (between being a land and air unit). Personally, I wouldn't even be suprised if this turns out to be a bug-and one of the very first to be fixed when the patch comes out. Until that time, you can bet your bottom dollar that I will be giving gunships at least a +50% bonus against mounted units.

Well, helicopters are basically a thousand parts flying together in loose formation. ;) I would just view the knight victory over the gunship as one of those cases when the helicopter malfunctions and falls out of the sky.

LOL... I was once told by a chopper pilot that you're not really flying it... it's more like keeping it from crashing...

Who needs a clock... I always know what time it is because the sun is coming up... or usually before that, my virus software attempts to scan while I'm playing... that reminds me... I'm going to have to adjust that now too!!!

Nice! And a solid 0.1 point better than they gave civ3 , I just hope the reviews stay as good as this. While it's nice to see such a positive review I have no trust in IGN.

Knight defeating helicopter is really inane indeed. How this virus or stupidity still exists in Civ IV is not understandable at all. On the other hand, I don't trust IGN, their scores are usually way off the mark and inflated, looking forwar to GameSpot, who from last year or so at least start looking at games beyond hype.

I'm gonna give the game the benefit of the doubt when it comes to low tech units defeating high tech. I really don't see it happening with any sort of regularity. The developers have already stated it was possible, but infrequent.

Ok, I figured it out... the knights had promotions to their anti-air defense/attack and were highly specialized in throwing their swords through the air and into the cockpit of all flying units... that answers it... ok...

Well, if you look at the video preview (mmmm, nuke shot at the end  :worship: ) you will see that there are around 6 shots in which the gunship attacked other units-and in 5 out of 6 it won without seeming to sustain any damage at all!! I wouldn't be suprised if the gunship he sent against the knight was down to its last 10 (out of 100) hp-in which case it probably DID simply malfunction ;)! That said-I still say a +50% bonus against mounted units would prevent ANY kind of knight beats gunship scenario.

This is a good review and a good reading. Steve Butts is one of the most talented reviewers on the Internet and a big fan of the Civilization series. Hopefully that means we can trust his judgement. If so, we can look forward to five busy years (until the next game in the series). My only problem is how I will manage to play Civ 4 and Heroes of Might and Magic 5 next year. :D

Great review!! seems civ4 will average a 9 out of 10, yey :)

How the Knights beat the Gunship

"The pilots of the of the 22nd Air Assault Regiment where bemused when the enemy army attacked them with horse riding knights, after all the knights didnt even have a weapon that could hurt the 22nd gunships and the pilots easily mowed down the attacking knights without taking a single loss. Having destroyed the enmey the 22nd Air Assault Regiment returned to its base to their Forward airbase to refuel and rearm. The pilots laughed as they ate thei lunches in the mess hall while the 22nds ground crew refueled and rearmed there gunships. What fools the enemies had been to attack a regiment of Gunship with kngihts! Then all of sudden the base Klaxons sounded the 22nds base was under attack! The pilots ran from the mess hall heading for the 22nds flightline but it was to late the enemy had attacked with another company of knights and they had broken through the bases defenses and slaughtered the pilots with sword and spear as they desperately ran for their Gunships"

and that ladies and Gentlemen is how a band of 13th century knights destroyed a regiment of 20th century Helicopter Gunships....
