Civ V Cracked Already

CiV was cracked ONE day after the US release. I did not get it solely because that version, being so early, required 2 additional 3rd party programs in order to run the game.

Reason I wanted to play it is to have a go at civ before the legit version that I got on steam was released. In the end I just said screw it and waited out the EU release.

I agree with the OP, all in all. Protection is stupid, waste of development $$$. People who will pirate it will pirate it no matter what, and same goes for people who will want to get a legit copy.

In response to all the mods posting, I just want to say that it was not my intent to start a how to pirate thread. I just wanted to know how the community felt about seemingly pointless copyright protection.

There has been a lot of good ideas in the thread, glad to get it started.

I cynically see Steam as an experiment that is eventually meant to lead to pay per play for games.
A per minute charge to play games.

VALVe (which owns Steam) doesn't charge for the DLC to its games and has added TONNES of new content to Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and the Half-Life games for FREE. Indeed, they admit that one of their biggest failures was expecting Microsoft to change its archaic policy of not allowing free dlc on the X-Box 360, which is why TF2 for the 360 remains unpatched.

So all the people here who say pirating is bad, has never ever downloaded a MP3 music? I say everyone on here has done it, so everyone on here is a pirate. you might have a few people who havn't downloaded a MP3 song, but I swear most of us had.

So a pirate is calling someone else a pirate. How quaint.

I also broke the speed limit once. I guess I have no right to call someone a murderer when they kill someone.

I want to start this post by saying that I am not a pirate and I believe that it is important to buy the games you enjoy.

However, I think it is very interesting to note that Civ V has already been cracked by the pirates. This comes after a lot of work to make Civ V's copy-protection difficult to crack. I just think it is interesting that gaming companies will go to such extremes to protect their games (often hindering the legitimate gamer's experience) when they are still cracked in a little under a week.

So my question is, why even have protection? It is never going to stop the pirates, and it usually just leads to unnecessary hoops for the actual gamer to go through.

It's day 1 cracks that screw games. Stop them from pirating it even for a few days and a big proportion of sales have already been made. It still makes a huge difference.

Steam is not about piracy ... thats just a boogeyman they trot out to get people to use it out of fear of even more restrictive (and equally useless) DRMs.

What it is about is expanding their share of distribution and, at the same time, gaining free marketing information on your buying habits, playing habits, etc ... not to mention gaining a captive audience for marketing other products.

How does Steam hurt customers?
How about because I wasted money on Steam games and now every time I try to start the stupid thing, it tells me that Steam is currently unavailable, and then promptly shuts down. The only way to fix the issue, is to uninstall, then reinstall, then I can play again...
:):):):) that, I don't have that kind of time to waste.

Most successful Anti-Piracy installment on a game I've seen was Bohemia Studio's Virtual Battle Space which required you to use a USB activated flash drive before you play. Lose or break that and you lose your right to use the product.

But even though it took some time even that got cracked eventually.

I've no desire to steal the game. But, I'd feel more confident about actually owning the game, and being able to play it whenever and wherever I wanted to, if I stole the darn game vs buying it. Civ5+steam has been the closest I've gotten to stealing software. If I could be sure that Firaxis would accept the money, I'd consider downloading a steam free copy from Moderator Action: *snip* and mailing the devs the money. Bypassing steam and 2k altogether. That would make me smile. But I won't.

Calling IP theft piracy, romanticizes it. Call it what it is... theft.
Theft is a dirty word for a dirty deed.

How can you reinstall if Steam is not available ?

You don't own the game either way, all you pay for is a license to use it. That goes for all software.
Yes I got that the first hundred times people have erroneously pointed that out. The thing is, I want OWN that license. I do not accept an arrangement like steams, where they control the right to suspend, revoke, or modify said license. steams EULA effectively grants them ownership over your game licenses. Not cool. I won't accept that even for my most favored game title of all time.

If the ownership deal wasn't enough... I don't accept how steam would get between me and my games. Having to start up steam, and then only being able to play my game if steam determines all systems are go, is also something I do not accept. Nor do I accept steam determing when I patch my games. etc. There are alternative electronic distribution systems which do not hassle the user so.
