Civ V stock image Scavenger hunt

The short answer is we don't know. No one here (unless they want to speak up) is a copyright lawyer. Intellectual Property is extraordinarily complicated. I think it depends on how much is changed, although, pragmatically, it depends on how much these images are worth and whether it's really worth fighting over.

Complex legal discussion aside...

If you guys think these have a simple filter applied you are nuts...they were used as guides for a paint over. There is some serious talent in making these, and having them all fit an art direction so consistently.

I suggest anyone looking down on this give it a try and post the results.

Again, I have not seen any examples of where the exact stock/copyrighted image was being used in the Civ5 icons. That is, clipping out a circle from the photograph and pasting it into the image.

*NOT* once sold for commercial use... but i keep repeating myself.

Any Stockphotos (including Getty images, btw) sites are absolutely in their rights to sue Firaxis for damages IF they can prove obvious originality.
No lawyer in their right mind would uphold such a case in courts for an extremely good reason; **NOT WORTH THE COST**.
Judges aren't idiots either.

So go ahead, paint by numbers and shuffle the links to evidence all you want - the fact remains as simple as some artists doing the work.

Contracts & documents are referred to by Law.

I captured some scene from The Legend of Suriyothai which I think Fireaxis used as a model for King Ramkhamhaeng.

Which is my point about if being complicated. They have to prove that it isn't changed enough to be an original work.

Which I did just say.

Leaderhead Rammy is 'genericly' enough Thai/Siamese in features and regalia that it probably could have been anything, but that's a pretty good find in terms of scavenger hunting in the original sense of the word.

edit: rofl two weeks later and basically the exact same points are still being made.

And who could do some of these without some reference? I have no idea off-hand what the Himeji Castle looks like.

Hey, even dinosaurs were kept as pets during certain periods of civilization - finding bones while digging up civilization ruins is completely normal.

Short of the Flintstones, I don't think I've ever heard of anyone keeping a dinosaur as a pet.
