I think something like this is quite easily doable:

It's funny how a game called Europa Universalis has a world map with every country that existed during a point in history on its world map, but a game called Civilization, if it has a world map, would only fill the continent of Europe.

I have mentioned in another thread that as soon as the world builder is available, I plan on making my Orbis map. It is basically a pangaea based on the view of the world according to the Greeks and Romans. It includes Europe, north Africa, the Middle East, and part of Asia. My Civ V version is in my sig. I hope to work on it over the Christmas break.14 civs. That puts it into perspective... I would just cut it off at Poland and not have Egypt, Sumer, India, Russia, Scythia or Arabia in it. Although having Egypt in would give you a reason to have boats... If it was on the largest map size it might be an ok map to play but anything smaller and it's going to be a very crowded start.

The map doesn't look too bad (we would still be making do with what we have) but Scythia historically had quite a lot of room to wander around, Rome could take North Africa, Sumer looks fine, the Norse can settle Greenland and Russia and Poland would maybe be well of settling eastward. The Himalayas can prevent India from venturing too far north. If we include a section of the east coast of the Americas then England/France/Spain will have to be forced to settle there maybe as they did in history, we'll be also getting a Canadian city state and maybe we can script America to start later with any city that was settled in the Americas prior to their appearance.
I am really feeling this. I hope someone make its as I will probably want to play it. I don't even care that the map has to be rotated to work.
Russia starting in St. Petersburg instead of Moscow will help Poland, well, exist.
To be fair this map is actually slightly less upside down than a conventional world map.
In the longer term for TSL I think modding is of course gunna have to bridge the gap prior to first exp. pack. Even then Europe will be overrepresented, but that doesn't have to be a problem. There's a few things that'll help I think.
First, we can resize Europe, stretch it down and shrink Africa slightly, stretch it into the Atlantic and stretch it into Siberia, ie, move the Urals and Scandinavia east to extend Central Europe. The goal here would be to roughly triple its size so it becomes a serious feature on the map while still actually looking like Europe.
The next thing we can do is take some moderate liberties with capital placement. For example, Germany's capital despite being Aachen, should be placed eastwards to fill the void in Central Europe and create breathing room in the west. Russia's capital I think should be placed east of the new Urals so they find it harder to forward settle into Europe and shut the door on their expansion. The Alps and Pyrenees should be again difficult to pass so Rome and Spain are more tempted to colonise North Africa.
My final thought is that even with these considerations, Europe is too congested, so one of Britain and France would need to be removed, and once Poland is added one of Poland or Germany.
After that we can go about filling the empty spaces. I have some ideas for which Civs and I plan on uploading a rough map later to show what I mean by all this![]()
I like your ideas!! Which Civs do you have in mind to fill in the blanks?
Well to be fair, Poland not existing because Germany and Russia were too close is fairly accurate.
Thanks! In terms of Civs I've tried to balance them to approximate landmass size of each continent. For Oceania that also involves reducing the size of Australia so some of the Pacific islands can be enlarge bed slightly.
Then my list would be, in addition to all the current Civs (minus France / England)
Africa: Swahili, Ghana, Ethiopia, bumping Africa to 5 Civs, with North Africa retaining some space for European expansion.
Europe: no additional Civs, limiting Europe to 7 alternating slots.
Asia: Khmer and Mongolia, bumping continental Asia to 8 civs
Oceania: Srivijaya and Tonga/Maori. I'm taking a few liberties here because oceanias a tough one to sell for Civs, but this would make it 2 Civs (or 9 for Asia and 1 here to be nit picky)
North America: Haida, Mississippian and Taino making 5 Civs total here. Potential to reduce the size of Canada slightly to enlarge the Caribbean and Central America a little.
South America: inca and Muisca bumping South America to 3 Civs
Obviously this doesn't make up the lack of some other big Civs like maya and Persia, but for the purposes of a map like this they would likely have to be cycled from game to game with neighbours, like France/England.
WOW, there are quite a few Civs in this list. Are you planning on making these Civs yourself? How long do you think it would take to finish this set and map? I am really curious because I love having tons of Civs to choose from.
