Civ2-gotm12 *SPOILER TALKS*

GOTM should only be played one time, with no info about what the game is about.

Wait a minute, this is a "spoiler" forum. So what does it mater how many times I failed trying to get the game going? If you have'nt figured it out yet, I am a newbie.
Have you read the GOTM rules? Restarting is not allowed. At least, you may retry the GOTM, but your first effort counts and should be sent.

How do you make 1 horeseman, one settler before you build a city?
Walking with your settler in a hut and get a horseman I guess...

joecoin, I actually ment after I built my first city I always do these things. :o

After getting wiped out by the Japanese in the Civ 3 GOTM this one was nice!:) The toughest thing was finding my Civ II CD!:crazyeyes

I got an archer from the first hut and a settler from the second. The archer and the first few warriors and horsemen I built went exploring. Lots of room for my cities and no need to fight. Just the way I like to play! I just minded my own business and concentrated on building cities. Had fun and things went fast at first. I did play a little different than I used to. This time I did not worry about building roads or irrigation. (I usually try to link all my cities by roads right away.)

The Mongols and Germans were fighting each other while I built cities and then they both pulled a sneak attack on me on the same turn! Around that time I also had barbs taking a couple of my outlying cities. Soon after I somehow got into a war with England and they took one of my undefended cities! BUT, I had chivalry and they didn't (hehe). No fooling around and no mercy. switched everything to knight production. Killed the Germans first. The Mongols were a bit tougher. Think I had dragoons by the time I killed them. After that I killed the Babs, too, for no reason at all. (Used spies and cavalry.) Took everything but London from the English. Could have finished around 1880 AD give or take 20 years but war got boring and I went back to CIVILIZATION building. There's still room to build cities and there are still wonders to be built! It's around 1950 now and I'll probably end up landing a space ship at the last minute.
Probably could have gotten a bigger GOTM score if I had killed off England a hundred years ago but that's not as much fun for me...

The story of our people began near the banks of a river in a stormy February night in the year later described as 4000BC.
The winter had been very harsh and several small tribes gathered in the lowland near the great river. The Great Council, composed of the wisest, the strongest and the bravest men, had called all people speaking the same tongue, our native Spanish, together to make a decision of their future. The Spanish, as they later called themselves, had always been adventurous people and so they decided that from this day on they would be living together as one people. But they still needed a sovereign ruler to lead them and it was decided that the oldest son of the most influential family would become the new ruler, Philip II.
As their new leader Philip II sent out several scouts to locate the best city site alongside the river. After all Spanish people had moved their possessions to this site the construction of a new city began. Madrid, the capital of the soon to be Spanish empire, was finished and officially founded in 3950BC. It was a beautiful little town, which eventually grew to a prospering city.
After finishing the city construction Philip II appointed several brave men to start recruiting the first units of the new Spanish army, they became his trusted military advisors later. On the other hand he also called the wisest Spanish men and they began to discover ways of improving the way of life, strengthening their warriors and glorifying the empire. They also tried to read the darkness of the unknown which surrounded them and identified a rough picture of the world.
The first expedition into the darkness consisted of a group of young, enthusiastic warriors. They encountered a small settlement of a native tribe to the north. They were militaristic people who were riding in a wagon pulled by an then unknown animal. Later the wise men named this wagon a chariot pulled by a horse. They were also adventurous people and willing to join us. Philip II sent them farther to the north and the group of young warriors continued downriver. After a while another settlement was discovered. A group of nomads was encamped there and they were also willing to join us. They displayed their worthiness by showing great skill in irrigating an area of plains where a lot of buffalos lived. A little farther down the river they founded the first new settlement of the Spanish empire. The young scouts continued to explore the southern area.
Meanwhile in Madrid, after the discovery of horses, a group of horsemen left the city to explore the darkness even further. The wise men were eagerly working for the empire when news from the north arrived. Our group of chariots had found a small town of other Spanish people. But when they explored the surroundings they met a foreign group of people with brighter hair and broader shoulders. They called themselves Germans and suggested something called a peace treaty but Philip II declined. Instead he insisted on a tribute to his empire and they cowardly Germans accepted.
The new settlements were growing rapidly and the living space in Madrid was diminishing every year. So a group of settlers left the city to build a road to the north and founding a new city there. The Spanish wise men kept discovering new technologies and improving existing ones. Other cities were founded in the southeast and on the eastern coast. The explorers, groups of chariots horsemen and the young warriors were busily reducing the darkness.
After this successfull beginning in the history of our empire, Philip II and the High Council decided a new policy for future developments. The Spanish should rule the world! (Philip-policy)
When the Germans weren´t accepting this new policy, they were the first to feel the might of the Spanish army. Units of chariots, horsemen and bowmen attacked their pitiful forces and captured their only two settlements. The newly discovered Mongol even further to the north were also resisting this policy but another group of chariots captured their capital and destroyed every remainder of their ´empire´.
Remember the young group of warriors? Well they were a little older now but they were the first to cross the southernmost icy regions to another part of our continent. To the north our explorers also began scouting this remaining area when they both met yet another foreign people, the Babylonians. They were a little more advanced than the Germans and Mongols but still not an obstacle to Spanish world domination. As the latest reports of the scouts reached Madrid a small group of older people made a visual display of the Spanish world in 1500BC:
1500BC.jpg

In the meantime the Spanish capital of Madrid had begun the construction of a great project to quell the unhappiness which was rising in several cities, the Hanging Gardens. This magnificient project is rightly so called a Wonder of the World. Being the oldest wonder it is still a remarkable sight and well worth a visit in Madrid.
As an addition to this wonder Philip III told all city gouvernors to contruct a temple as soon as possible.
This era of peace also brought the knowledge of map making, which led to refined maps of the world and the possibility to explore the sea. Philip III knew instinctively that there had to be another continent or bigger island to the east and ordered the construction of several triremes, so that this land could also be claimed for the Spanish empire.
In 1000BC a new military campaign had started, troops attacked the Babylonians in the west and the Naval Expeditionary Force conquered an English city in the east. As soon as the they met the English, demands were exchanged and war declared.
1000BC.jpg

The pace of the war increased on both fronts but the veteran units and strong leadership of the Spanish army were more than a match for the enemies, while three new Wonders of the World were being constructed in the heartland of the empire. The fulfillment of the Philip-policy was getting closer and closer as no new adversaries were discovered. Instead all remaining English settlements could be captured, some new cities founded with just the heavily defended London remaining. While the last battle was reaching its climax, all three wonders were be finished in time, and the King himself commanded the chariot regiment which was about to march into London.

People throughout the Spanish empire rejoiced when all opposition had been eliminated and the world was at peace under Spanish rule.

Today we once again celebrate and relive those final moments and we remember all our heroes of this epic struggle for world domination.

Very nice, Lucky. ;) With the next GOTM (for Civ3 :p) I'll make a log. But I don't know if it'll be in this form of story telling.

Anyway, I've played this GOTM as well for a change. My very very small log:
Germans: 520 AD
Babylonians: 1756 AD
Mongols: 1802 AD
English: 1820 AD
Spanish: 1820 AD :yeah:

It is amazing how easy Civilization II is compared to III. This conquest was a piece of cake. In the current GOTM for Civ3 I died, and that was at regent/prince level. And I doubt if I could've done better.

But ofcourse I'm very used to Civ2 and have played much much much more often.

You could've finished earlier, that I'm sure of, but you probably have like all the wonders and a heap of cities, something a quick finish prevents.....

No, Kevin. I was...detained. :D I had a worthless start and a wrong (battlefield) tactic.

I do have quite some wonders, but that's all because I conquered them.

Heres the deal:

Victory 1910
Conquest of the planet

I also kept my reputation at Spotless the whole game.

Not bad for your first game of Emperor difficulty eh

:tank:

Managed an AWESOME start. The land we had was so damn fertile though. Got set up, grabbed a few wonders. Switched to Democracy. Kept demanding tribute until war was declared on me.

Switched to Fundamentalism (thanks to my wonderful friend the Statue of Liberty :D ). Every single city I had pumped Cav, Cannons and Riflemen. After taking most of the planet I started building infrastructure for a democratic government so that I could get the highest score possible :king:

First to fall were the Germans, closely followed by the Mongols. Half way through blitzing them, I decided that I'd relent and grant the Babylonians an ultimatem. They broke the cease fire agreement. My wrath was swift and deadly. Not one of the vile cities was under Babylonian control within five turns. NOBODY double crosses the mighty Spanish empire!

Building transports and wiping the English dogs off the face of the world was all that stood in my way! So I did. Except I stopped at Nottingham to switch back to democracy, pump luxuries to 100% and disband any military outside a city.

Then, after the year of 1910, the whole world bowed to the mighty Spanish Empire!

Edit: Oops, didn't read not to post score.

I'm in 1000 ad. I'm doing 2 advances/turn right now even though I've killed my keyciv, :( However I'm a bit behind in techs from where you should be usually, :( I'm pumping enginers right now to get all this damn forrest, swamp and desert of the map, :)

What's a keyciv?
Your keyciv can be your biggest opponent.

But in another sense it can also be the civ you want to give all your technology, to increase your own science rate. It works best with the purple civ, i.e. Mongols.

Definition:
The keyciv is the civilization the computer uses to calculate the cost for a technology (number of beakers).

If the purple civ is in the game (and alive  ) and you are more advanced than it your science rate will be pretty low, say 5 turns. If you give all your technology to the purple civ your science rate could go up to 2 turns or better. :D
Just be sure not to give away your technology if the purple civ is bigger than you.:suicide:

its based on your power ranking(weak, strong, pathetic etc).Your key civ will be the one that is in that power slot.
IE-you are supreme-purple is the key
you are pathetic-white is the key

These are most likely the only 2 power positions you will hold.Pathetic in OCC.Supreme in everything else most of the time.

I'm seeing very late conquests everywhere.......now do they build-up a lot of cities and farmland etc., or do they just not have as much luck as me and don't they keep spitting chariots like I did (which I used to build phalanxes in conquered cities and undefended border cities, and for wonders.........)

Players usually have their favorite age and unit to combat with. Many like to wait for tanks and howies. Some like artillery and cavalry.
I also like to go after them early as they more vulnerable then.I like knights.Never had much luck with chariots or elephants on emp or deity.Even king for that matter.A river phalanx or walled phalanx seems to be more than enough for those units.
Knights usually bog down against pikes and/or walls. Then I like to move in with a mixture of knights and crusaders.Diplomats should be mentioned as well.Sabotage those walls if needed.

If the terrain is rough I will be more maticulous with pikes and catapults.Flash forts with pre worked settlers and patiently take cities out one by one.

Then of course there is bribery.I don't do it much as it is very easy and not much fun but very effective.Early cities are cheap due to quality and inferior government, low cauffers, etc.

It takes awhile to prepare, but a "late" game blitz with bombers, tanks and howies can make those 1-3 turn complete destruction stuff.AIs will fill up their land with RRs for you,so you generally can have your way.
One very nice thing about howies is you almost never lose a combat with them.In fact ,I don't think the ai can set up the defensive situation where a howie can lose.

Under what situations can a Howitzer loose.

Vet How -> 18 attack

Vet Fort mech inf -> 12 defense

does a howitzer ignor bonuses such as terrain? Or only walls?

The best way IMO to beat a howitzer blitz is to only have one entry into town, 1 mech inf, 2 bombers. Rotate the bombers over the mech inf and the only thing that can attack the square are pathetically weak fighters.

One thing bad is I am not getting any peace bonus.I have Marco's and I do have peace.Had it for many turns. Not a non barb combat for along time.Beats me.The ai has tryed the "contact" thing but I have monitored it every turn.

The peace bonus doesn't start going into effect until after game turn 200. Which should be 1750 AD for this GOTM.

Sorry, in my selective reading I didn't realize that the question was already answered. :crazyeyes

Whew! I'm gonna have to speed it up so I can submit in time. Why isn't anyone posting in this thread anymore. Come one guys, share your story, we all want to hear it. Ever since civ3 gotm started the spoiler threads have only been around 2-3 pages long. They used to be around 6-10 pages with tons of people posting. Come on guys, we may not have too many people but those of us that are here need to speak up. Here is my story so far.

Declared war on Germany early and kicked the $#!^ out of them. Declared war on the Celts I believe and have seperated their empire in half and blocked them off from attacking me at the poles. I lead them in military and in tech. I have found all civs so I am planning on giving them a good night party soon. I have done all of this with fairly primitive techs too. It's been really fun and I can't wait to see what other people have done. SOMEBODY POST PLEASE!!!!!

EDIT: Celts = Mongols Oops!

I just (barely) passed 1 AD and am now up to 220 AD.

The only cities in the game besides mine are the Mongol Capital and a Barbarian City named London.;)

In 1 AD I had stats very similar to Smash's game and had 37 cities. I also went to Republic in 60 AD. So I'm keeping pace with Smash :D (although the end game is not my strongist point of the game).

If I run short of time I will just try and kill the last two cities and submit that score. It won't be nearly as good as it could be, but at least I'll get something in.

This is the first game I tried building the Hanging Gardens early and it did very well for me. I also have Mich's Chapel, so hapiness is somewhat under control. I now have 46 cities but expansion is very slow now that I'm at a Republic. The Caravan deliveries are just starting to hit, so hopefully the money can help me catch-up on the reduced production in the cities. That and having the Pyramids should help get my cities a bit bigger and make the caravan delivers worth a bit more. Right now I'm getting around 50-100 bucks a delivery.

Prior to that I had some run ins with Barbs, but some well placed units (on moutains and hills) held out against them. I also just bought a Barb boat just before taking Nottingham, so I have a NONE trireme (first time in a GOTM for me).

Here's my 1 AD Demographics:
