Civ3/Civ4?

civ4's fatal flaw, imho, is the dumbed-down battle mechanics (ie no more A/D values and only one single # representing a unit).

for as much hype as civ4 generated (initially that is), it is far from a polished game and civ3 still is a better game.

also, the strong support for civ3 scenarios/user-modded items is proof-positive that civ3 has a great following and is very much alive and well.

i won't even get into the hollow promises that civ4 was to be the most moddable civ game yet.

My reasons:

I want A/D/M for every units, not only Strength/Movement
All cities have the same graphics
Interface overcrowded
I can't get used to this kind of multi-figure units.
I hate the terrain graphics (and until someone mods them better than the current best terrain mod...)
I want an EDITOR!!!

The things I like about Civ4 more:

Many new concepts like Religion
Animated resources
Great music
Looks more modern than Civ3
Tradeable units

From those, I decided I like Civ3 much more than Civ4. I'll wait for the expansion to see if it gets better.

And at the moment my computer is running Civ4 too slow. I'll have to make some changes and it will work good again.

Mirc,

your points regarding why you don't like civ4 mirror my own. well put.

i should also note that the unit gfx are rather crappy looking.

another beef i have, albeit a minor one:
i tried the 'Desert War' scenario that came w/ the game. well, i was quite disappointed to find that the creators of the scenario subbed in modern-like gfx for ww2 era units. i recall seeing a b2 bomber hovering around one of my cities and when i went to see exactly what unit it was it said that it was a Bristol Blenheim Bomber.

now, i read somewhere that some cfc'ers actually made that scenario and firaxis published it. i don't get it. it is a "B-Rated" scenario. i hope they didn't pay those guys a salary to compile that beta scenario...

I also heard it was made by some of the CFC, but I thought that there were just speculations. Unfortunately I can't play scenarios in Civ4, so I can't say anything about it.

Edit: Crosspost with Padma.

Hey, it's a Bristol Blenheim bomber! Isn't that a "B2"? :p

And no, any fan-created mod is provided gratis. All the mod-makers really want is the recognition that they did some reasonably good work.
heh. noted Padma. ;)

thanks for that info. i'm happy to know that they were not paid.

however, will all due respect, i feel that the Desert War scenario was not reasonably good work. it was littered w/ bugs and glitches. very "unprofessional" imho.

i would love to have known how firaxis chose to pick who was to make what as far as the fan-related scenarios were concerned. did they draw names from a hat or something?

I don't know insider details, but I am pretty sure it was people who developed some of the top mods for Civ3. As for bugs and glitches, I am sure they didn't have the kind of time and other resources that they do when making purely forum-based scenarios (i.e., thousands (or at least dozens) of people helping them beta test, etc.).

understood :)

i guess my main gripe is the standard principle of a professional outfit such as firaxis being able to include 'polished work' within a product they're charging us money for. that's all. it is unfortunate that the developers did not take out more time to hash out the bugs :(

also, Padma, while i have your attention...
what is the "Referrals" line that is present when one views a user's profile?

B2 Bomber = Bristol Blenheim Bomber

No, they are 2 completely different planes. The B2 is a modern era bomber and the Bristol Blenheim is a WWII era plane.

Yeah, I was just bustin' his chops. ;)

As for referrals: here is a thread on them.
thank you for that link Padma :)

i should probably say civ4 has a huge modding ceiling when compared to civ3. unfortunately, i don't know Python coding. although i would hope that at some point, a good/user-friendly editor is released to make it a little easier to make good mods/scenarios.

for some reason though, i just can't get past the 'single value' unit set-up for civ4.

why couldn't they have simply enhanced the core civ3 engine?

religion and the other new features could've be added. no? even the low-quality unit gfc could still have been implemented?

i wonder what others think of this...a civ4 that would have been like a juiced-up, ultra-modable version of civ3.

Yer last words sum up my overall distaste for CIv4 why ruin a proven formula. Why not instead iron out the trouble spots and sprinkle some advanced eye candy and more performance enhancments. Like playing with 40 civs in a more controlable, time efficient manner. More realsim, up the AI's IQ, you know something along those lines...

I think their attitude was we can't continue to rehash and sell the same thing ,(Vannila, Collecter's edition, PtW, Gold, Conquests, Complete, even a Game of the Year edition!) if we expect to charge a full ticket price.
The modders had improved so many prexisting elements mybe some "suit" figured Civ 4 has to be something completly new to improve on, Then things went straight downhill from there.

T.A JONES,

i often wonder the same.

my guess is that the co. wished to keep up with the Jones' (sorry for the pun ;) )so to speak. by this i mean that the trend in the latest genrations of TBS games, i think, is this fangled 3D view, low pixel appearance that so many other newer games have shifted to.

despite all of this, i would very much still like to know why the A/D values were scrapped  i mean, i'd have even accepted this 'new look' had they opened up new avenues w/ the existing engine/format.

i do, however, like the 'specialty' flags for civ4. i would love to have this feature in civ3.

does anyone have any good analyses of the civ3 format (A/D) vs the civ4 one (single value)?
