Civ5 in China

I'm also wondering if China will force a name change to the natural resource Mount Everest. China's official news agency Xinhua - even when broadcasting in English -always calls the world's tallest mountain by the name it's known in Chinese: "Qololangma", and then follows that up by explaining to us English readers that the world's tallest mountain is also known as Mount Everest in the West.

Could have just said Everest to begin with ...

Just saying...

BTW, there are no names of real Chinese cities in the version here, so Beijing it Beicity, Shanghai Shangcity, etc, which leads to the real oddity that the only English words in the Chinese language version of the game are the names of Chinese cities.

Wait what?
Why on earth would they do this???

My guess would be they are sensitive to Chinese cities getting overrun and burned down by other nations, like, um ... Japan?

Seriously I don't agree with the politics of the Chinese people and especially their rulers for me both Tibet and Taiwan are allways gonna be independent countries if they have a problem with games don't allow them if they want to be some stupid racists and xenophobics then be it:mad:. I haven't ever bought products from China because I hate their current government. I actually don't hate the country but it's government is very antiquate

Well in reality we just need to wait for the old leaders to die. The younger generation will be better. Don't know how much better but atleast better.

China is going to be in big problems soon as they will have a lot of retired people and few young people paying their upkeep.

Yeah at least their current Prime Minister is better than the proceding ones at least more open to dialog. I wish North Koreia would also be that way:(

Careful there. A couple of years ago you cold have ended up in jail in Taiwan if you claimed Taiwan is an indepenent country and it's still controversial there.
And don't throw words like racist or xenophobic around so in this context. It's more "comical patriotism", which is by the wa prtty comon in asia, not only in China. See the Siam looks weird thread.
But I agree, the chinese government is so stuck up about any depiction of china in the media it' not even funny any more.

Well I only heard about that from China , North Korea and now Thailand. Never heard of it from Japan or South Korea

Heard what ? The patriotism ? One of the reasons Firaxis won't include emperor Meiji as a leader in Civ is that Japans has strict laws about depictions of the imperial family and they would probably have to pick another leader only for Japan.
An example from Korea: In the Soul Calibur series the character Mitsurugi is replaced in the Korean versions of the games because South Korea prohibits positive depictions of Samurai in media.
I'm sure there are more examples someone could find if he was really searching.

Sounds completely silly from a western perspective but these are more sensitive cultures, even in states that are modeled after western democracies.

Now that I think of it they also don't include Hirohito for that reason as well in addition to its atrocities

Its not like any western countries ban/change videogames for their content.
Its not like any western nations would ban religious dress based upon the fact we've been in conflict with people.
Or that any western countries have taken over large portions of their countries from the people who originally owned it.
History is always written by the victors...

But having been to China, I did chuckle at the fact that at no single point in the national war musuem in Beijing does it mention the americans dropping the a-bomb on Japan to end WW2. Also the opium wars are covered by a small placard.

Of course not. Everybody knows that China won the WW2 not anyone else.

Which in one way, in a sort of totalitarian extreme conservative way, i can understand. They dont want their glorious nation to be depicted as getting pwnt by say, Tibet.

However, and this is what i dont understand that They dont understand (their government, or whatever).. These types of decitions just make their country itself appear weak (applies to ALL countries who censor alot, im looking at you too Germany). I mean, they ban or censor video games because of their content, as if their worst enemies (Tibet or Japan or w/e) would sit down with their generals and play a nice game of Civ5 to prepare for their possible invasion?

Of course they would never play friggin civ5 as a preparation of war strategies, but my point is, that's exactly how it appears when a country censors stuff. It is counter-productive, they do it to ensure their nations image of strength, but what it really displays is weakness, that a single tiny computer game is a threat to their nation.

Woah im getting way too serious here, but my point is just that i really can understand it from a patriotic point of view, but given how such actions Really look to the rest of the world, it's anti-patriotic, you're basically saying that your own country/culture is too weak to withstand a game made by some random computer nerds (we all are <3).

The only thing more funnier than Tibet's fanboys is hypocrites who think USA#1, China bad!

And I'm sure the younger generation support the older. Unless you have proof otherwise, you're whining relatively pointlessly.

And then the Chinese will demand that Hong-Kong be added to their city list.

Totally unrelated to the game...

...but I find it amusing that many Westerners support the exiled leader of a former totalitarian state (yes it was) with a long history of religious theocracy and serfdom. Not saying Chinese communism is a step up, but still, just because the Dalai Lama smiles a lot and writes books about inner peace that you can buy at Barnes & Noble doesn't make him a saint.

Are you Chinese?

Point taken though. ;)

I imagine Hong Kong, Taiwan and Lhasa will be cut if they are in. There shouldn't be any problem with Japan as China is formally friendly to Japan, the Chinese people just hate the Japanese, plus the game represents Japan in the medieval period. The civilopedia will probably undergo heavy and messy surgery from censors though, especially regarding China, Japan, and technologies that the Chinese love to say they invented, such as ravioli....

Not to start a whole series of spam...but when you always talk as if you are better than some place in the world you should at least look at your own society in the same subject.

I think we could say the natives in America being an older version of what China is trying in Tibet. Again this is not meant to discuss the cultures really. I am only pointing out that if this was 1850 the USA would be censoring supposed Native American claimed Nations as well.

Yes I believe China is wrong about it, but please don't pretend that there are not restrictions in every country.
