CivBE gameplay at Gamescom on Thursday and Friday!

I think some critics here are missing the point. This gamescom stage is showing the game to average visitors, not to the small group of CivFanatics like us. Civilization Beyond Earth is probably not the game the majority of people is familiar with, so the stage guys have to explain a bit more and cannot rush through the gameplay. I think the presenter does a good job staying calm under very bad conditions. It is so loud, he cannot even hear what Dennis is saying. Moreover, he has to play, to talk and to be mindful about all the people around him - and all of this at the same time. This is not easy.

The German gamescom is a hell of a games fair with 350.000 visitors, mostly interested in shooters. Therefore, I would not even go near it. Considering the unfavorable conditions and the fact that this was the first Let's Play of the gamescom with some technical issues, I am thankful for what I am able to see. Hopefully, today there will be less technical issues and less "orcs" in the crowd.

Shorelines are defined in the mini map under the fog of war.

I believe that is one of the options for your spacecraft in the seeding.

I noticed in previous videos, when a new faction arrives, it's ship drops off a city and FLIES OFF! Where? Why? Back home? WTH? It kinda annoyed me as it kinda breaks continuity of the game. But in this video I noticed Sochua's ship stayed, so I guess they came to their senses? What gives?

Perhaps what they were thinking of was something like the the Mars Curiosity lander that drops its payload and goes off to land or crash somewhere else. I admit that I had a similar thought -- "where is that thing going to?" -- but I'm not sure having it sink into the ground through the buildings makes much more sense.

Here'S the link for today's live stream on Gamestar's youtube chanel. Beyond Earth will be on at noon (UTC+1) which is ninety minutes from now.
Hopefully this one is going to be better.

Other breaking news: We have confirmation that it is a turnbased strategy game and it is played in turns.

It's over. Five or six turns played in half an hour, hardly any new info. There was a quick glimpse at the upgrade screen which made it look like you can actually upgrade a L3 Purity unit to an L4 Supremacy or Harmony unit like Sentinel to Marauder or Disciple. If this is true it could offer some interesting possibilities, but I'm not sure if spreading out your affinity levels like ths would be practical.
There was also a quick look at the espionage menu. You can steal research points and technologies. All actions have difficulties assigned to them. Stealing research points or energy is 'easy' and stealing a technology is 'medium'. Spies in your capital can also increase your health by 1% per spy. Yeah, multiple spies can be in the same city.

I had a closer look with higher vid quality at the spy menu.

You can assign missions called National Security Projects to your spies in your own cities. He had propaganda active which increases your health by 1% per spy in the capital.
The operations in foreign cities with difficulty and required infiltration level seen in the screen are:

Establish Network
Difficulty: Very Easy
Level: 0

Siphon Energy
Difficulty: Very Easy
Level: 0
takes 9 turns in the demo

Steal Science
Difficulty: Easy
Level: 1

Steal Technology
Difficulty: Moderate
Level: 2

When I first saw that my thought was, "In all the intervening centuries we haven't managed to find a way to land on a planet better than Curiosity landed on Mars?"

It was a cool tribute to the Mars robots though.

The unit upgrade screen does confirm that bonuses do stack. His sentinel had both the "+15% attack" for his previous marine level as well as the "+30% defense" for the sentinel itself.

Yes, I gather it is possible to upgrade a unit from one affinity to another one but there is a big opportunity cost. If you have already reached say level 5 in Supremacy, it is probably better to continue to go deeper rather than research a bunch of techs to rank up Purity from 0 all the way to 5 just to make the switch.

Yeah not much new.

It was nice to get a look at Elodie. I find the leaders look much better in motion than in the stills we saw when the leaders were revealed.

Well, we know what the current affinity points are required for infantry upgrades are (and I think we can consider the Marauder, Apostle, Sentinel, etc... names confirmed):

The fact that the upgrade bonus stack should make for lots of interesting possibilities. You can go for a balance of defense and offense bonuses or go all offense or all defense. I imagine a unit where you stack all the offense bonuses would definitely be very strong.

One advantage of switching affinities would be that you can cross different bonuses, like a supremacy bonus with a harmony bonus to get more unique combos of bonuses for your unit.

I don't see it possible though to leap from one affinity to another (at least not easy enough).
These are Affinity levels right there, that each needs 10-15 points to level up.
So even though it doesn't quite show, even the 8 levels required for the Sentinel are a major investment on that path.

The first specialized branch of the infantry looks like a 5 to me, not an 8.

I think you're right, it's either 5 or 6. Still a major investment though .
If each level needs 12 points, for L 5 you still need 60pts!
