civilizaiton iv 1.74locks up at init file catalog

i'm actually somewhat envious of those of you getting error messages and the like; i get no further than the loading box and the game goes not responding. i have the latest direct 2 drive version of the game (it comes patched with 1.74) but at this point it's worthless.

my system specs are as follows:

winxp sp2
intel p4 2.4 ghz
radeon 9600 256 mb
sound blaster live! 24-bit

again, the problem occurs basically immediately. i double click the icon for the game to start, about 10 seconds later the loading screen pops up and gets no further than the first message which is "init file catalog", and i get less than 1/5th of the loading bar and it goes no further and simply goes into "Not Responding" mode. VERY frustrating seeing as how I just pissed away $40 on the game. I've tried reinstalling it several times to no avail. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

i have the exact same problem with d2d civ4 v1.74. it worked fine with past versions on the same computer, and nothing has changed... tried reinstalling, didn't work. d2d should let you dl past versions of games :/

Any help here? I have just gotten a brand new Dell that is 100% more than system requirements.

I have downloaded the D2D version and installed and when I click the icon to start playing, it stays on Init File Catalog. After 10 minutes, it finally gets half way to Init Python and another 10 min I can get into the game.

All drivers are up to date and windows patches are up to date. Please help!
