Civilization 4 delayed? The Take2 trouble

I doubt Take-2 will have problems shifting GTA in Australia. The government is threatening to take it off the shelves completely, and yesterday I was in EB and saw no copies. Thinking it had already happened I asked the manager and he said he'd sold 50 copies in two days and that every EB was putting in orders. I was told there's a 6 week wait for an ordered copy now as they've all cleared.

...and that the store was cited by inspectors that the temperature setting was a safety violation and asked to make changes.

It's none of the government's bussieness what temperature Mc'Donalds wants to set it's coffee. If you don't like the temperature, get coffee from elsewhere.

This entire "scandal" is ridiculous. I don't recall back near the end of her husband's second term Hillary trumpeting "deceancy".

The federal government isn't constitutionally granted the power to regulate "advertising", the "airwaves" or any else of this. And they CERTAINLy can't regulate a self-imposed industry rating system. Read the constitution Hillary, read the constitution.

At the most this is a state issue.

Also, since ESRB is a private industry run "rating" board, don't they set the standards for "M" "T" "E" etc.? How can the government say they were "misleading" the public.

Hillary believes it takes a village to raise a child. it's pretty clear that Washington D.C. is the village, and the American populace is the child.

So, it seems the whole "scandal" is turning into a big advertising campaign for GTA, with good sales everywhere in the world except, maybe, in USA, where they have already flooded the market with the game. It is just an impression. Corrections are welcomed, with good manners, please.

The whole thing is ridiculous, so are they changing the rating of the game so now it cannot be sold to 17 years olds but you have to be 18 or more to buy the game? Big deal.

Edit: By the way. How do they know that you are 17? The driving licence? And if it happens that you are 17 and you don't have a driving licence, you cannot buy that kind of games? I think USA is a great country, but sometimes is ridiculous.

They don't have to ID anybody. The system is entirely voluntary (for now). Part of what some in the government are trying to do is make this a law in the USA. Right now, anybody can buy these games (even the AO rated ones) if a store will sell them to you. Many stores have store policy of ID'ing people, but it is a store policy, not a law.

It does. Ask any parent.

They don't. Infact, from what I've seen, a kid would need to have an adult with them in order to buy it. I was getting a game once at EB, and this kid and his grandfather (or father) came in to buy the game. All the clerk did was to ask the adult if it was ok.

No it doesn't - all it comes down to is the parent taking an interest in their son/daughter's life and hobbies. It's like the parents who go and watch their kids play sports or play an instrument. It's the same with video games; all it takes is a, "What's that you're playing, son? Counter-Strike? I'm on next round to show you how it's done, boy ;)."

If you don't want your kids to play violent video games with sexual content then if more parents actually took an interest and perhaps took notice of the rating system, this problem wouldn't be occurring.

It does NOT take a village to raise a child. For one example, i was raised by my (single) mother, so your logic is completely unfounded.

If you are a parent and you can raise a child without external support, congratulations!
You are either very skilled or very fortunate. However, some parents aren't able to do this. A single parent who has a severely disabled child might not have time to take an interest in his/her other child's hobbies.

A disabled child wouldn't exactly have any hobbies which you need to be active in though would they? Also, we're generalising here. Yes some parents find it harder than others, yes some parents have jobs with long hours (most people in fact). Bringing up your children in a decent manner should be more important though, and using "I don't have the time to moderate my child's activities" is just an excuse for not bothering to do it at all.

No, but he/she might require a lot more care than most children.

"Bringing up your children in a decent manner" includes making sure they have food, clothing, shelter, and medical care. These things cost money, which does not grow on blueberry bushes.

*Now* who's generalizing?

"Bringing up your children in a decent manner" includes making sure they have food, clothing, shelter, and medical care. These things cost money, which does not grow on blueberry bushes.

And asking them what they've been upto and going to their room for 5 minutes to chat costs nothing. Taking an interest in someone costs nothing.

*Now* who's generalizing?

I said "we are generalising" after you started talking about the disabled - i meant generalising as in I'M generalising about the issue - not talking about specific issues like taking care of retards and the like. So yes, i am generalising.

Civ IV may or may not get delayed for any number of reason, but I'd worry least about the distributor. There will always be another distributor. A major loss in the developement team is another issue.

It is doubtful the court case will be tried, much less a win in grandma's favor.

I like civ because of the lack of uncontrolled violence.

As to violence in video games, it can be said that it can contibute to more violence at the edges with folks at risk.

I always have to shake my head at people like this:

...in fact, it was she who bought a game rated M to an underaged child

This is the kind of stupidity which makes me think of some censored things to do with people like that. In most places the kind of common sense which has parents more or less policing what the kids see and do in their own homes is gone. Instead, you have the kid dropped off with some poor granny who doesn't even know CGI from the sidewalk beneath her feet, and one (out of millions) just happens to be a veteran plaintiff who can smell a slick lawyer who can net her the million-dollar tax-free bonus from three miles away.

Score one for the American litigation culture.

This is soooooooooooooooooooooo ridiculous!!! I'm happy the plaintiff sueing has no bigger problems in her life!
Roll the dice in courtrooms, that's what's happening in the U.S.

I definitely will admit this GTA situation falls in the category of a frivolous lawsuit. However, I have to say that, unfortunately, litigation is pretty essential these days in the US. The corporations have so much power and sway over the other two branches of government that the judicial branch is the only one that is moderately responsive to the needs of people. Even then it doesn't always do what it should.

The sad thing is, a lot of people don't seem to care. This is probably the most frustrating thing for those of us who do.

Rockstar didn't "include" this in the game... it was something they experimented with and deactivated quite effectively in the game as it wouldn't have passed rated M muster. However some curious moron decided to go looking for "secrets" and somehow managed to find a way to reactivate this part of the game that was never intended to be seen. According to rockstar, a lot of effort had to be put in to find and activate this stuff. The reason why this is an issue is because most of the content that makes this possible is part of the game assets. All you need is the patched developed by this so-called genius.

The name "hot coffee" has nothing to do with the mcdonalds lawsuit. It's called that because the girlfriend asks you in for coffee before the "sex game" begins... I think we can all figure out why it's "hot" coffee at this point. It's a sarcastic nod to what is really meant by the invitation for coffee.

Wow, you believe Rockstar's version. From what I hear, all of the content (not most, all) is right there on every disk and it isn't at all hard to turn on. Any halfway competent hacker would find it.
