Civilization 5 - Civilizations overview

That's not how Japan's bonus works. Japan's bonus means that units will deal full damage when wounded. The amount of damage taken is not affected.

it says they ":fight as if at full health" and since none of us have played the game, we can't say for sure that that isn't how the bonus works. that may be your interpretation of the wording, but from the wording and watching the gameplay demo, it looked like it worked on both offense and defense for the damage roll. and the wording makes me think that it may throw a wrench in the cassock's plans. i might be wrong, but you can't dismiss it offhand like that until we play the game.

By "wounded unit" they mean a unit that is not at full health. This is a completely possible state for any Japanese unit to be in:

If a Cossack attacks a non-wounded Japanese unit, the Japanese unit will defend with full strength.
If a Cossack attacks a wounded Japanese unit, the Cossack will deal extra damage and the Japanese unit will defend with full strength.

The advantage for the Cossack is still there.

ummmm...

You didn't mention the benefit for China ?

Does anyone else think the Indian war elephant replacing Chariot archers and having ranged attack is really well...stupid ?

If you can shoot arrows from a chariot then why not an elephant? Don't ask me if that's how they were actually deployed though.

Side note... Cossack ability is likely the free promotion "Charge" (+25% strength against wounded units). It would fit with the other UU benefits (e.g. Shock I for Japan)

Improved Great Generals.

They get an additional +20% strength boost from great generals (+45% boost in a 2 til radius instead of a +25% boost). They have a higher spawn rate (so more generals will appear).

Actually, war elephants were used in much the same way as chariots on the battlefield. Tactics for both were basically to run out and smash formations with brute force (more charging horses and wheel blades with a chariot, but still that's forceful) and then retreat while having an archer that was also riding along pluck away at enemies as they left.

The mechanics of the game don't really allow for this unit to be the battle power it actually was in the ancient world. It was strong in melee and an annoyance at range. It wasn't a sure thing though because a chariot couldn't function in rough terrain. It wasn't until Alexander developed a "U" formation of his phalanx that they were no longer a threat on the field. Chariot drives into the "U" and the spears go up. A horse won't run into a spear and so they stop and the troops on the top corners of the U brutalize the driver and archer.

Not sure how they could have translated this into the game, but maybe make chariots unable to enter rough terrain and war elephants able. Give them a flat strength of 10 and a penalty against cities.

Anyway, I'm with ya.

what happens when Cossacks (UU-Cossak-replaces Calvary-Damaged enemy bonus "they do enhanced damage when attacking wounded enemies.) attack wounded Japanese units (Benefit-Bushido-UNITS FIGHT AT FULL STRENGTHEVEN WHEN DAMAGED!!!)?

do the Cossacks get thier bonus? or does the Japanese UA of having units always fight as if at full health negate it? I am curious to see how that interacts.

Japans bonus doesn't effect thier damge recieved only thier damage inflicted.

Strange but the digital manual says that paper maker replaces library and longhouse replaces workshop.

I think the digital manual info is more likely to be correct.
