Civilization 5 Game Of The Year Edition

Is the game worth buying now since they patched it, or should I wait?

You can buy the GOTY edition when is released. Civ 5 is definitely worth 49$.

I think civ 4 is a better game, but I already played more than 100 hours of Civ 5, and thats a lot more than I usually play the games I buy.

I've always said I thought the music in Civ V is excellent. Whether it's worth $50 is another matter...

Haters gon' hate.

I quite like Civ 5, ya'll sound like people crying that WoW is different now than it was at release...

I think it's great they have a compilation pack for $50. Good for people who want to jump in to the game now.

Didn't past Civ games usually wait more than a year (and patch themselves into vastly better shape) before putting out this compilation edition?

According to Amazon, Civ3 GOTY Edition came out on October 29, 2002, which would put it at 364 days after vanilla Civ3. And someone else already found out that Civ4 GOTY came out 5-9 months after vanilla Civ4. So no, previous Civ titles didn't wait more than a year before a GOTY edition :D.

Although I'm not aware of there being anything new in the GOTY editions of Civ3 or Civ4 from the vanilla, other than patches. But even then, retail boxes of Civ3 at least that shipped after the initial release but before GOTY Edition had patches - my Civ3 Vanilla (not GOTY) came with patch 1.07.

Despite the controversiality of Civ5 being called a GOTY, I think this is a positive for someone who would already buy Civ5 without considering whether it was a GOTY - getting more content for the same price is good. As for those who might buy Civ5 only because of the GOTY moniker and be disappointed, well, I'm sure there are other games out there that they might buy and be disappointed in for the same reason.

It is actually.

Trade was too complex for the casual crowd so it got simplified greatly.

More likely, Firaxis too figured out that the trade system in civ4 was too resource intensive, and decided to go for something simpler. Especially, since they already their hands full with trying to iron out the wrinkels in the other new systems they add, and did not have the time and resources to add yet another complicated system.

That being said, the lack of any in depth trading system is a let down. I do have good hope that this may get some love in a future expansion.

Read the rules, take a look at the notice board, and in case of doubt PM a moderator ;).

And now back to topic. I still can't see anything on .com. Does anyone else see the GOTY anywhere besides in the german speaking area?

Gamespy gave them GOTY.

Why Gamespy giving Civ V, or any other game they work with, any award whatsoever, is a load of bull.

One of several relevant posts from the thread linked directly above (not the first link, the second link).
Spoiler :
It's weird that so many of the people that don't like Civ 5 find it so hard to believe that many others do in fact like it.

I don't find it hard to believe that others like it. There are parts of it that are decent, even approaching "pretty good."

What I have a hard time believing is the objectivity of an award from a portal with direct ties to the publisher, and that it genuinely thinks it's better than any other PC game out there from 2010. There is a big difference between "I like this game" and "This is the best thing that came out for PC all year!"

I think it's pretty clear that the "award" was given to be a face saving "buffer" (something they can point to later as 'proof' that it wasn't THAT bad an idea) for what I'm guessing is disappointing numbers. Of course I can't prove it, but given the facts it certainly seems possible.
That, and for the express purpose of setting themselves up to be able to "legitimately" market a GOTY edition.

How exactly is Civ V the game of the year?

I dont hate it, and I do get some enjoyment from the game, but thats mostly because I'm a junkie civ fan. I can fully see why it isnt so good to other people, and how it isnt as god as Civ IV was.

Definitely not a GOTY awardable game, more like it should be dropping in price if they want more sales.

I'll get Civilization 5 when the "Complete" edition comes out (aka all of the DLC and expansion packs, if any will be released). Preferably when that collection also drops to something like $30-40.

I believe that the "Game of the Year" edition is being released too soon, considering that more DLCs will likely be on the way. I think they should have waited until all the DLCs for Civ5 were released; then again, I'm assuming they were going to release more DLCs in the first place.

Well, for one we can bash Civ V! You can't do that on the official forums!:crazyeye:

Umm...does this have anything to do with Civ 5 winning the BAFTA for Best Strategy Game of the Year?

Surely you guys have seen that over on the 2K forums, right?

Cheers.

Hadn't seen it. In fact, I have idea wtf BAFTA is... Anyway, I got nothing to say against them... if they like Civ V, then they like Civ V. Nothing I know of ties them to the devs/publisher. Grats.

By chance, does anyone know... was that (BAFTA thing) announced before or after the Civ V GOTY edition was announced? If BAFTA came after, then 2k/Firaxis still made the GOTY edition on the pretext of an 'award' from their own business partner.

2K Games and Take-2 have both gone to the dark side. They are evil. And Civilization Game is good. = they are out to destroy the game to make a quick buck.

I'm all for making money, in a responsible way. Not like Take-2/2K = hiding porn in there games and blaming it on modders.

Gamespy got sucked into the corrupt non-sense of labeling a broken game 'GOTY' to a business partner. 2K is destroying the very name and essense of Firaxis. They have probably already decimated the ethical standards of the Firaxis team themselves, by either getting rid of the good ones, and bringing in spineless dirt.

They are a money grubbing company that could care 2 lots about their customers (F with BBB), and they could care less if they publish a crap game (Civ 5)... as long as they make a quick buck, they don't think about long-term consequences. That's why they always are having financial problems, because it's a bunch of idiots managing that business. 2K Greg and 2K Elizabeth I almost feel sorry for, because they have to lower themselves down to pond scum in order to try to cover up the bad decisions of the 2K management moron team that they work for.

Pathetic, pathetic, pathetic... Thanks 2K, for making me lose the respect I never had for you in the first place. <facepalm>
