Do you wish Civilization V ?

A lot of people seem to be under the misconception that if CivV is released, their copies of Civ4 will be confiscated

I voted 'later'. I will buy it when it comes out (possibly after waiting for at least 1 patch) but if I had the choice right now I'd rather have SMAC 2 first.
Seconded. With all of the available mods it would take years to exhaust the possibilities of the current Civ. Time for something new and a fresh take on SMAC would be perfect.

1. Firaxis dont own SMAC anymore

2. you can continute to play all the mods you want on Civ4 even if 5 comes out.

I do not expect Civ V before 2011 .... so "later" for me . Civ IV is still one of the best strategy games around even being almost with half decade on top ( atleast it is definitely in competition for the "Better AI" area, and that is all that matters in a strategy game ) and still has a huge potential for improvement via modding.... and we want a nicely running Civ V, so giving them less than a year to make the game would be bad :p ( translation, pls no more 1 h lag IBT as I had until 1.61 :p )

Yep, EA games owns Alpha Centauri. Moreover, it was more the work of Brian Reynolds than it was Sid Meiers'. That said, there's nothing to keep Sid from doing a new game and calling it Proxima Centauri or even Betelgeuse. The plethora of FPS games, all direct descendants of 3D Realm's 2001 Wolfenstein suggests that derivative games won't find themselves in anyone's court of law.
I will keep playing the mods. I still have Civ III loaded and I play the mods for it occaisionally. Other than hopeful thinking, there's no sign as yet that there will even be a Civ 5,
Sid Meier on the Firaxis website:
Question: I am a huge fan of Civ 4. When can we expect the release of Civ 5?

Sid: Well, we’ve just wrapped up the Civ IV series with the release of Civ IV: Colonization, which seems to be a hit. And we recently released Civ IV: Complete for anyone who is interested in getting Civ IV, the two expansions and Colonization all on one disc (and DRM free). We have always said that if the fans want more Civ we’ll keep making more. We’ll take your email as another vote for more Civ and let you know if there is any news to report.

The sales of Civ4 and the current economic situation more or less guarantees CivV.

But you realize - that is what they will focus on in the next version of the game - right?

It will be "prettier" (they really thought the figure leader heads would go over big, so I would expect them to focus on more of those types of graphics) and slower and little to no improvement in the AI?

:crazyeye:

The trains remake... the pirates remake... what did they have in common?

The AI in civ4 has been drastically improved over civ3. They're not even comparable.

I'll admit that the graphics certainly have made the game a little more bloated, but I don't think the next version would see such a leap in what it demands of systems. Civ3 to civ4 marked a transition to 3d graphics (as opposed to 2d isometric) which is necessarily going to entail a huge increase in system demands. Civ5 doesn't need to make any such leap. Civ4 is already 3d.

So, unless they make all the units have massive polycounts (they're likely to be conservative with any increase there) or throw in something unexpected, video demands aren't likely to increase all that much, even with new graphics.

The engine for the game itself might make much higher demands (in order to support things like an even better AI), but probably the graphics won't too much.

"Never" Why? The next version will have even higher poly count animated graphics ("Zoom in and see your Rifleman picking his nose!" "Watch the ancient Romans queue up at the public latrine!") while still making the game harder but not deeper as you move up in difficulty. Simply increasing the advantages given the AI as you move up just makes it necessary to do more micromanaging and to memorize more minutia and at some point that just becomes tedious. It doesn't make sense to me that the tech tree is that same at Settler as it is at Deity. For one thing, it bewilders new players and for another it leaves you with nothing to look forward to. The same goes for victory conditions. Leaving the current ones in place at lower levels is okay but, it would be nice to have others (Spiritual? Ecology?) become available, along with the new techs for them, as you move up. The same should apply to Wonders for the same reasons.
If Civ 5 ever appears it will tout the number of new buildings, the 'enhanced' graphics, new units, new Civs, bigger maps, etc., while I (Having at long last opted out of the CPU, memory, graphics card arms race) will probably never play it.

Aren't difficulty levels supposed to be used to increase the difficulty, not add more content? I don't think people on lower levels should be forced to play at higher levels just to get the full game.

I could be wrong but, people on lower levels don't 'get' the full game even when they have the full game. Experienced players tend to learn which tech paths, particularly in the early game, to follow and which ones not to follow. It might help an inexperienced player to drill some of the classics into his head before turning him or her loose on the full tech tree. I didn't mean to suggest that you should not get access to all techs until you reach Deity level I meant that having a more limited tech tree on Settler and Chieftain might be a way of teaching good habits to a new player while cutting down on what for them might seem to be a bewildering array of bad choices. I'd also like it better if the reward for moving beyond Noble involved more than the necessity of micro-micromanagement and the requirement to chivvy the AI civs into doing what you need them to do.

Edit:

Damn. So much for that idea. :splat:

Really cool would be Civilization 5 including SMAC2.... I mean after winning/losing "Civilization" you would lead your nation to "AlphaCentauri" and the game would go on there :D

Later. No point having another version of Civ with only small improvements, and end up with tons of expansion packs to add new features and patches. This will only disappoint the Civ veterans. Wait a few years and as the technology improves, we can have a much better version of Civ (better AI and not just graphics). Civ4 complete is good enough for now.

Later. I play Civ 4 in little bursts, so I've gotten a lot of life out of it. Working on Monarchy atm.

Something I'd want most for Civ 5 would be some better options for unit tracking. The current system for keeping track of potential enemy units (but "friendly" atm) is terrible, especially for anticipating a naval ambush. I either have to spend every turn watching numerous, pointless units move around, or I have to manually scan my entire, vast coastline for incoming stacks.

Later. I don't even know what CV could possibly bring to the table constituting a clear improvement over CIV. Also, there seems so much left to do with CIV, both from a modder's and a player's perspective.

and you cant do any of that once civV comes out, eh?

I voted don't know, but I miss the 'don't care' option. Civ IV is one of my all time favorite games and Civ V has to be really, really good in order to get some love from me. I will play which ever version I like best. It matters not when it comes out in that respect.

If you want to get something new from Civ there are so many mods out there that I do not see why you would be left wanting something in that respect. Go try something different then.

You don't seem to understand. We are all so addicted, if Civ 5 came out tomorrow we would all HAVE to go and buy it, learn to play it, find bugs, demand patches, start trying to mod it, etc. It would cause so much disruption to our otherwise perfect Civ-playing lives :shake:
