Civilization elimination thread

Babylon's UU being unimpressive is irrelevant (although I love them walls). Everything stems from Tech. Babylon is the best at tech.

Inca 0
Korea 2

Korea better at tech and better UU. The better civ, easily.

And tech (at least to some degree) stems from population and production.

I do agree that it's pretty irrevelant that the UB for Babylon isn't impressive. That's not their point.

There is no question that Babylon's UA is powerful. But that doesn't mean that it's a well constructed civilization. Look, you could invent a new Civ and give them +50% bpt, gpt, and hammers. Would they be powerful? Yes! Would they be the Civ of choice for people looking to shave a few turns of their record? Yes! Would they be boring as all hell? YES!

Babylon is powerful, but that doesn't mean they were the best civ. They have one unique trait that's worth anything, and it's almost a passive trait. The first few turns as Babylon isn't even a game; it's a color-by-numbers exercise that consists of almost the exact same moves regardless of context.

I'm glad to see that Babylon was third. They get high marks for being a powerful civ, but they get low marks for variety and flavor. I'll probably never play them again.

Edit: Although I'm an Inca booster, Korea is a fine choice for #1. The Korean UA requires that you play a somewhat different game than other civs, and their UUs are quite different than the base units. The turtle ship offers an interesting tradeoff, and it's quite powerful for seizing coastal cities. The hwacha also offers an interesting tradeoff (setting asid the bug, which makes Korea unplayable for me at the moment).

More great scientists>slightly more pop

Maybe a typo on your second point but, I actually prefer the Babylonian Walls to their Bowman.

i think duhu was just mad at having to include a reason, haha. Bakspatel can finally finish the tally for the OP.

The most boring civ has won. hurray.

I was a bit surprised by a whole host of the last civs. I don't own any DLC civs, so I can't comment on how fun or boring they are, but China, Persia, and Arabia all 3 bore m3, and some of the most fun civs were taken out first. America, Byzantium, Spain, and the Celts were all out of the top 20 but would certainly make top 10 in my book.

However, the voting was all over the place. Some people voted for power, it seemed more toward the end than the start (where Austria was taken down), some people voted on how the AI uses the civ, and others voted on how fun they are.

Heck, Arabia was eliminated on the reason "Never trade away resources!" I don't like them, but of all the reasons to take them out...

So, it is finally over. Let us look at the "TOP 10" (in alphabetical order):
Arabia
Babylon
Carthage
China
Inca
Korea
Maya
Netherlands
Persia
Siam

I think that is a nice bag with something for everyone: Tall and wide, land and naval, science and war and diplomacy and economy. :)

Yeah, I think for the most part the voting (after the top 10 or so were decided) came down to personal playstyle more than anything else. They're all good for different reasons.

And tech (at least to some degree) stems from population and production.

Tech almost wholly stems from population, but no civs give a particular growth bonus - possibly because a food bonus civ would be stronger than the alternatives. Siam can give a flat food bonus, but only with maritime CSes and chances are you won't befriend them soon enough to translate the extra food into very early pop growth. The Inca food bonus is not impressive until terrace farm upgrades come in later in the game and terraces themselves need to be researched. Even a couple of hills next to a mountain only give you the equivalent food output of a floodplain or a farmed grassland.

Inca are a strong civ, or they wouldn't have made the final two, but there's no way they're outgrowing Babylon's science rush or growing fast enough to offset the fact that every Korean specialist is the beaker equivalent of an extra pop point in a city with a library.

That's all true enough, but I think that's more a product of those two civs being very powerful. If a civ granted a great Engineer as early as Babylon gives its scientist, you'd probably see them score just as well. And as you said, they'd never allow a civ to grant food at the same levels, as it would be just far too good.

Don't get me wrong, I still think Babylon is the strongest civ (even though I didn't vote for them).

Im glad korea won I love playing as them, the extra 2 :c5science: for each specialist is powerfull, you can pop Great People all the time and have a tech lead on everyone. I agree with most of the civs that made the top 10 Im glad Persia got revived and hung in there , Siam should have been a little higher imo since they are so versatile. I think we should do another one of these threads in a few months as im sure there are others who will be trying civs out they have never tried due to this thread.

This is just a product of me being a (bad?) part-time player, but Siam has lost a little lustre for me since all of the CS couptastic stuff has started. I've had less desire to work the CS game since.

For me, I learned to appreciate Maya more from reading this thread. They didn't make the top 3, but they are solid if played right. The Mayans require a different sort of play style which takes some getting used to.

Yes...this has been a most interesting thread...I'm playing now as Siam for the first time in quite a while...it looks like it will be an interesting game... I have the HG in one city and Petra in another... The Huns are causing trouble, but I was surprised at how anemic their first assault was...those Horse Archers seem surprisingly weak despite their scary-looking icon...;) [I have three Composite Bowmen..thanks, in part to finding Eldorado first...and also due to a fortuitous alliance with a militaristic CS...]

Yes the top 10 in general look very solid, in particular, if I were going on strength alone I think I'd have the exact same top 7 (in a different order tho :)). However, I'm still unconvinced by the Netherlands and still not sure how to play them. Is most of it hanging off the sea beggar? I'm prepared to be swayed by any convincing arguments :).
