Civilization III Fixes (PLEASE READ)

Are you logged in as the local administrator? Civ3 requires you be a local admin in order to play.

I do not think it is the disk. It worked fine in my old computer and it was a 550 MHz with windows ME. I was mainly wondering if anyone else ran into the same problem. Another thing is there are several of my older games that I still enjoy playing that this happens to as well. It might be a windows issue. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.

In Windows ME, you didn't need to be the admin to do it. In XP, you do. So are you logged in as the local admin?

I have more than 1 problem! :(

I've installed Civ III, but when I play and quit the game and I want to play it another time, I can't play! I press on the Civ III start button but then nothing happens. Only when I reboot the computer, I can play Civ III another time.

Problem 2: So I installed patch 1.29 for Civ III, but when I installed, I can't open Civ III anymore, even when I reboot the computer! So I uninstall the patch, but then Civ III still doesn't work. Only when I uninstall and install Civ III, I can play it again. :(

Problem 3: When I used the Landscape Editor, and I change for example the Civ colors. When I play this scenario, I can't change the Techs in the Tech Tree, so when my Civ is trying to invent Bronze Working, I can't change anymore to Pottery. And I don't see also the pictures of the units/buildings in the Tech Tree.

Can anyone help me? :(

Sorry for quoting my own post, but after 1 year and 4 months, I'm still looking for the answer. :old:

I know you are all busy with answering other people, and that alot are playing Civ IV now. (and that I'm not an active member) But I don't want to wait another 16 months.

(oh, and problem one is solved already, in those 16 months I re-installed Windows and it did normal again ^^)

to Turner,

Now I understand what you mean. Yes I was logged in as the administrator. I will uninstall and reinstall the program in the next few days to make sure i installed it right.

Generally, if we don't answer, we don't know. Maybe not the nicest thing, but it does keep the forum tidy and we don't have a bunch of 'I don't know.' posts.

I would repost problem 3, if you're still having it, in the Creation & Customization subforum. I change the civ colors all the time, and I've never had that problem.

That would have been my next suggestion.

I have civ 3 version 1.07f (if that's how it's called), but I want to use a patch to upgrade it to 1.29f I saw on this site. I have done this successfully a while ago (but I don't remember how anymore, but I do remember it was very hard). However, then I uninstalled Civ 3 and recently installed it again, but I found that it's back to 1.07f. I still have a file on my computer Civ3v129F. When I start it, a message pops up saying the company is unknown, but I just choose to open it anyway. Then, an installshield thing starts the set up to install civ3 v 1.29f (of course this all takes a while due to my slow computer). But then, a really weird message pops up. "Do you want to completely remove the selected application and all of its components?". I click ok, then it quickly installs something and then it says 'InstallShield Wizard has finished performing maintenance operations on Civilization III v1.29f.' I click finish.

During all that, my disc was in its drive.

But after all that, what am I supposed to do? When I start civ 3 again, it still shows v 1.07f in the bottom left corner (and the new features of 1.29f don't appear when I play a game). I am sure I am doing everything right, but I just don't know the right step to do after I start up the install shield file.

Am I doing anything wrong?

Go here, and completely remove Civ3 from your hard drive. You shouldn't need to delete the Civ3v129f file. Once you've followed those directions, try to reinstall it, and then apply the patch again.

If you need to re download the patch, it can be found here.

There seems to be a problem. I could not delete the Civilization III folder, because it said a certain file was in use. I looked further and the file was located in the Civilization III Complete folder, which is located inside my Civilization III folder (it is there because I attempted to download civ 3 complete (and I'm never doing anything like that again...), but it didn't work so I removed it all, but there still seems to be a folder of it inside my Civ 3 folder.). So I just pressed delete on every file inside my civ 3 folder, except for those in the civ 3 complete folder, as they wouldn't delete. Then, I did the registry edit thing (I'm not that technical so I just followed the guide, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, but I followed every step carefully so I'm sure I didn't do that wrong) and inserted my disc into its drive again.

On the autorun screen it automatically opens when I insert the disc, it actually shows the option Play Civilization 3! How is that possible? Because the Civ III file is still there? When I click the option, the orange button turns blue, but then it turns orange again. I can double click and click how often I want, it won't start the game. This is weird... At the bottom, the options Uninstall and Reinstall are still there. However, normally when the game is not on my harddrive, instead of the option 'Play Civ 3' it should show the option 'Install Civ 3'.

How can I delete my annoying civ 3 complete folder with everything in it and with that my entire civ 3 folder aswell? Do I have to delete my infrogrames folder (in which my civ 3 folder is located) aswell?

Edit: I somehow managed to delete that file and totally delete my civ3 folder, and after that I autorunned my civ 3 disc. It didn't show Install Civ 3 so I just hit Reinstall. I installed it again, and then I downloaded the patch again and applied it.

It worked! I'm really happy now. Thank you for your quick response to my initial post.

I play through the first campaign, (I am brand new to the series!!) and when I win the campaign it shows me the stats, then it encounters a windows error and shuts the game down without saving or recording it. So I can't really complete the campaign. I went to civ3.com and downloaded the only two patches on there, but it is still happening. Any ideas? appreciate any help I can get

When I try to initiate propaganda, I select a rival (I have a spy already in place ) select espinage and select initiate propaganda but I cann't select a city. All the other missions seem to work fine just not propaganda. Anyone have any ideas?

Probably the civ you're trying to do propaganda against is Democratic. Democratic civs are resistant to prop.

I just bought a new computer with windows vista and it will not allow me to install CIV3. I have no problem with CIV4. Any Ideas? I have an NVidia GForce 7600GS with 512 MB ram.

Make sure you're logged in as an administrator to install Civ3. It requires it.

Actually, I think Civ4 does as well. So that may not be your problem.

I just purchased Civ III, for my new computer which runs VISTA. I installed, and then when I try to run I get:

Wrong Disk Inserted
Please insert original Civ3Gold CD/Dvd

I tried to re-install in SAFE mode. Purchased this game new. I've also installed both patches from the civ website.

Any ideas? I don't know how to install as an "administrator," but I'm the only user so I assume I am the administrator for my cpu. If you know how I can check this please advise.

Frustrated -

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately.....

I followed instructions, and then recieved an Unable to Locate Component error, "This application has failed to start because binkw32.dll was not found. RE-installing the application may fix this problem."

Then I uninstalled and re-installed, and still receive the same error.

Any ideas?
