Civilization Request Thread

I'm pretty sure that Odin or one of his alternate anagrams was one of the main inspirations for the character of Gandalf - at least aesthetically.

Norse mythology has never really been something that interests me particularly (though rereading American Gods has changed that somewhat), so I'm not sure of the exact reason that Odin paid such a price. I think it might have had something to do with the ritualistic nature of the sacrifice and the fact that it was essentially a sacrifice of Odin, by Odin, for Odin :p

This website might answer some of your questions, but you can probably find better resources. That said, this conversation is veering wildly away from civ design :p

Why did it require Odin to do that to gain the knowledge of writing and other knowledge of the universe?

Ah okay, yeah isn't he called a Chieftain because the Æsir are a tribe? I've seen them been reference as such, okay he did that to gain knowledge and the ability to speak the runes. By why was the 'pay' so gruesome for? One eyed teddy bead Odin? I want to see that! A lot of the paintings of Odin from the 19th century make him look basically like Gandalf.

Mimir takes what he wants, and that's generally service to him, but he couldn't ask that from Odin, because technically Mimir is also Aesir, but there is a major theme in almost all Germanic and Protogermanic mythologies that magic always has a cost, and so such magical power requires a huge price to be paid.

On another note, has anyone ever done Hannibal Barca right?

Depends on whether you consider JFD's to be done right.

No, he never really controlled Carthage. I actually want to make a Hannibal's Iberia:

UA: Elephants and Archimedes: Units from a more advanced era than an enemy unit gain a 10% combat bonus against them.
UU: Numidian Cavalry: Unlike the Horseman it replaces, the Numidian Cavalry gains a 20% combat bonus against other mounted units.
UI: Cannaean Tactics: Unlocked at Philosophy, Cannaean Tactics can be built on grasslands and grants a defending bonus to units on that tile, 20% if against a larger army and 10% against a smaller or equal army.

What? Unless you're talking about Hannibal lector here I don't get what you mean; Hannibal was elected sophet, like the highest position in Carthage, wasn't he?

yap

"However, the blatant corruption of the oligarchy gave Hannibal a chance to re-emerge and he was elected as suffete or chief magistrate. The office had become rather insignificant, but Hannibal restored its power and authority. "

He was the highest rank, but by that time Carthage was effectively an Iberian State, not the other way round. He spent most of his life outside of Carthage and in Iberia and Italy. I just want a Hannibal civ that focuses more on anything other than the failure that was the crossing of the Alps and the elephants. He was an amazing tactical genius and all people care about is elephants.

Anyway, that's not my department. Question though, once I finish the Aesir mod, which mythology should I do next?

Oh here's a challenge, Turkic mythology! There's so many mythologies you could do. But I gave you a unique/challenging/awesome/slightly biased option. Well, it's better than the Greeks anyway, You up to it?

Don't diss the Greeks! Uh... maybe an Underworld under Hades?

I want to see Egyptian mythology, if only for the amazing leaderscreens.

Anything but Greek for a while. I'll be happy to do it if there is a clear leader (It's going to be so hard when I get round to the Tuatha de Danann) and things to make abilities out of.

One, I will never do Egyptian, two, I'll do an underworld under the world.

More seriously, I'll do Duat under Anubis or Osiris(leaning towards human rather than the dog).

Fomorians under Balor could be cool, in counter to the Tuatha Dé - not sure what you'd do for uniques though.

I don't know about the Famorians but the Danann under Nuada Silverhand with an ability about spawning great people when you kill great people thing from the origin of the spear.

About hoopy's Quetzalcoatl thing, shouldn't it technically be under Huitzilopchtli?

Not really, Huitzilopochtli was the Patron god of Tenochtitlan, but he wasn't quite the main god on everyone in Mesoamerica. You could perfectly have him leading, say, Cholula.

I'm willing to make the 'art' and design of a request if someone else does the coding for it and I like it.

I can code it.

If we're talking about doing crazy relgions, why not a Charles Manson civ? :p
Don't make a Charles Manson

What do you need for it?
