I'm pretty sure that Odin or one of his alternate anagrams was one of the main inspirations for the character of Gandalf - at least aesthetically.
Norse mythology has never really been something that interests me particularly (though rereading American Gods has changed that somewhat), so I'm not sure of the exact reason that Odin paid such a price. I think it might have had something to do with the ritualistic nature of the sacrifice and the fact that it was essentially a sacrifice of Odin, by Odin, for Odin
