Starts with Holy and ends with Empire.

Maybe the Kingdom of Burgundy too, but I'm not sure about the borders of that.

La Tene? Could give them the Nazca/Harappa treatment.

Iunno, I want to say Savoy. I'm not sure though.

I don't think anyone's done Savoy, though it'd be easy enough to check...

EDIT: Ignore me, I'm being stupid. Savoy bordered Switzerland, as did Milan, but neither took it over. =/

UA: Kind of a Big Deal (City-States are always at least Friendly with you.)
UB: Channel 4 News Station (replaces Broadcast Tower: Tourism output of city doubled)
UU: Brick Tamland with a Trident (replaces Pikeman: is a Pikeman, but has a ranged attack)

    Couldn't help myself.

Though a legit Burgundy would be awesome.

Wasn't JFD talking about Savoy at some point? Or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part.

Actually, yeah, you're right. It doesn't matter anyway. What does is that I've figured out a way around Viregel's Swiss problem. Ahemhemhemhemhem:-

    ---

    Eydtgnoschafft (Werner Stauffacher)
    Start Bias: Hill, Avoid Desert
    Capital: :c5capital: Berne
    UA: Rutlischwur
Gifting Land Units to City-States generates both +10 additional Influence and a flat boost of :c5culture: Culture. Specialists generate +1 point towards their respective :c5greatperson: Great People for each Allied City-State, rising to +2 points after an Ideology is adopted.
    UU: Anti-Burgundianists (replaces Pikeman)
Costs more than the Pikeman it replaces and cannot receive the Cover promotions (pre-existing ones are ignored, though they return upon upgrading to Rifleman). However, it starts with Charge, +1 :c5moves: Movement, and the unique promotion "Von Winkelreid", that grants a +15% :c5strength: Combat Bonus for every adjacent enemy unit, with an additional +33% bonus if the target unit shares a tile with a Great General.
    UB: Brucke (replaces Aqueduct)
Standard Aqueduct benefits. Costs no :c5gold: Maintenance and generates +1 :c5culture: Culture and :c5production: Production per Friendly or Allied City-State. Generates +1 Influence per turn with any City-State you are sending a Trade Route from a City with a Brucke.

    ---

Tried to make this work. Don't know how well I succeeded. The Reislauferei were taken by the Swiss mod someone else did, so the obligatory pike replacement is based on their victories over the Burgundians and Habsburgs. In similar vein, Arnold von Winkelried (whose name is lent to the promotion) was a semi-legendary figure from the battle of Sempach, who purportedly threw himself onto the lances of Habsburg foot-knights so that the Confederation forces could break through the line and inflict stabby death on the dismounted cavalry. This is in addition to having a resplendently silly name. As for the Brucke, well, it represents the Teufelsbrucke, or Devil's Bridge, which spans the Gotthard Pass and was responsible for the Swiss cantons becoming so fought over by the princes of Europe. Finally, the Rutlischwur was the original agreement between the founding three cantons to form a league and unite against their more powerful foes, and it might actually have happened, possibly, maybe, sort of.

    Ish.

Both Kingdoms of Burgundy (Kingdom of the Burgundians and Kingdom of Arles) only controlled half of Switzerland. But that maybe the closest thing to controlling Switzerland without being an empire/Switzerland.

Well, there's always the European Union civ... oh wait.

An Alemannia civ would be cool I think, too late for the Enemies of Rome invasion unfortunately.

Oh hey, Arles. I did one of those. =]

    ---

    Kingdom of Arles (Conrad I)
    Start Bias: Grassland
    UA: Arelat Imperial
Gain points towards a :c5goldenage: Golden Age every time you make a Major Civilization declare war on another Major Civilization. Units gain a +1% :c5strength: Combat Bonus for each foreign Land Unit in your empire, whether Military or Civilian.
    UU: Chevauchée (replaces Knight)
Stronger and faster than the Knight it replaces. Starts with Shock I as well as a unique promotion, "Conrad the Peaceful", that grants a +5% :c5strength: Combat Bonus while attacking for each City-State Allied to Arles and a +10% :c5strength: Combat Bonus while defending for each City-State allied to the opposing unit's owner. Cheaper to buy with :c5faith: Faith, but more expensive to build and cannot be bought with :c5gold: Gold.
    UB: Barbegal Leat (replaces Aqueduct)
40% of the :c5food: Food is carried over after a new :c5citizen: Citizen is born. Additionally, +2% :c5greatperson: Great People generation bonus and +1 :c5goldenage: Golden Age point for each Specialist slot worked in the City. Costs additional :c5gold: Maintenance.

    ---

I buffed the bonus of the Barbegal Leat slightly from the original post and added in another weird bonus for the Chevauchee. Arles is probably the weirdest Civ I've ever come up with, and is therefore my favourite idea - if Jifford gets round to doing a new version of TWAM, I would love for my uniques to be the Arles UA, the Peleset from Leugi's Philistines, and the EuroFOR from Viregel's much-alluded-to EU Civ.

    Thoughts? =]

Found a good potential icon symbol for La Tene if you're interested:

Oh biscuits, here's a preliminary design for the civ:

    La Tene
    Leader Name???
Center of Trade: Your territory does not count against the distance of trade routes. Gain one gold per turn for each foreign trade route moving through your territory.
    La Tene
    Colours - Bronze and Greenish?
Unique Unit: Spear Chariot. Replaces Chariot Archer. Cost: 56. Combat: 12. Movement: 4. Does not have the ranged attack of the standard Chariot Archer. Instead, it has a stronger melee attack with a 25% bonus against other mounted units.
Unique Improvement: Oppidum. Replaces Trading Post and can be built in the same tiles as a Trading Post. Available at Mining. +1 Faith. +10% to units on this tile on defense after Masonry. +1 Hammer after Iron Working. +1 Gold after Guilds.
    Starting Bias: Grassland Hills
    Region: Western Europe

Oppidum's been taken by something else, though I forget who. I'll knock something together in a minute. =]

    EDIT:-

    ---

    La Tene (Femme de Vix)
Start Bias: Hills (is it possible to have a Lake start bias? Iunno.)
    Capital: :c5capital: Marin-Epagnier
    UA: Head-Takers
Tiles in your territory generate +1 :c5faith: Faith for each Land Unit that died on them. Gain a flat amount of :c5faith: Faith every time you train a Land Unit or construct a Pile Dwelling.
    UU: Ecuyer (replaces Swordsman)
Starts with additional experience for each Mine worked by the City in which it is trained. Has the promotion "Noric Steel", which grants double movement on Hills and a +25% :c5strength: Combat Bonus against units that require a specific Resource. Requires 1 Iron.
    UI: Pile Dwelling (All New!)
Unlocked at Bronze Working. May only be built on tiles adjacent to Lakes. +2 :c5food: Food, +2 :c5faith: Faith, +1 :c5production: Production. +1 :c5culture: Culture and :tourism: Tourism after Archaeology is researched.

    ---

Something cool and kind of terrifying about the La Tene culture is their fondness for headtaking. It's currently theorised that severed heads held a special place in La Tene cosmology, like a gateway to the spirit world or some such thing. Heads, swords, chariots, you name it, they got thrown into the sacrificial shafts and added. It's one of those Civs that's centred on defensive wars and lakes, like a more turtle-y Aztecs, but it also gives us a chance for another female leader - the Lady of Vix, whose grave turned up with masses of jewellery and the biggest bronze wine krater ever found. 290 gallons of wine. In French terms, that's almost a snack. =]

Hope that's of use to you.

Scape's design is far superior to mine. Hopefully it makes it in game!
