When you say Balkan do you mean like big band, with thumping big drum and brass section? Like "Time of the Gypsies"?

That is one crazy cover btw - :crazyeye:

Balkan Beat Box are an israeli trio. trombone-bass-drum, with some crazy vocals and samples.
they sound a bit electronic, but not much.
highly recommended!!!

That Balkan Beat Box trio sounds worth checking out. :)
It also got me thinking of another trio, Swiss The Young Gods with the classical rock setting vocals - drums - electronics. ;)

First album:

Only Heaven

They have apparently released some other records that I'm gonna check out now. :)

@ mrtn: I was going to post the L'Eau Rouge cover but I never got round to it. A friend of mine in school had the LP and it took me years to track it down on CD. Just a minor correction though, "Gasoline Man" is on the T.V. Sky album.

Attached is the cover of an album that I bought at the same time as I got T.V. Sky in a record shop in Utrecht. A Finnish flatmate of mine had been raving about this Belgian band for weeks. It makes good background music.

A moment of silence for the talented Cuban vocalist Ibrahim Ferrer, who died yesterday at age 78. He wasn't even known outside of Cuba until Ry Cooder discovered him at age 70, retired from music and shining shoes to make ends meet. He won a grammy a couple of years later.

If you posted some pics Toteone, I can't see them.

@ Bigfoot: No way!!! :( I saw your pics but I didn't notice what you had written first time round. Ibrahim Ferrer was a legend! :hatsoff:

It would be good to think that he left a really strong legacy for younger Cubans to follow, but that sadly isn't the case. I heard a radio show recently which was saying how many young Cuban producers these days are not interested in preserving the roots of Cuban music, prefering hip-hop and ragga instead :(. (Makes for some excellent hip-hop though)

To keep the pictures coming...

Roy Ayers - Coffy

Some shots of the film's lead actress - Pam Grear

Glad the site thread is still active ... but I'm having computer probs which has effected my album input ... keep it up guyz :goodjob:

OK Guys - More record fever for you now [pimp]. I think I mentioned somewhere that I do many deals with various radio stations, record shops and record labels, in order to get the tunes I play. Well here are two tips:

1) MAIL ORDER: I have a very special and excellent deal going with a record shop I used to live near in London. This shop sends me £50 worth of vinyl every 2 weeks. After every package I receive, I listen through them and then we talk on the phone. I tell them what was good and what wasn't, and what I don't want more of etc. I have a good understanding with a guy in the shop now, so much so that I rarely have to send stuff back. I basically told him I want stuff from 4 genres: Funk, Jazz, Hip-Hop, 'Latin'. Then I tell him names and eras I like (and then we guff on about how we love so and so).

It's a great way to get your records. It saves time rooting through crates looking for something you may never find. You learn far more and it all comes right to my door. :D It also means I don't have to rip off the same guys I want to keep making music for me. I have said my piece on file sharing etc a while back in OT.

2)
Anyway! Here are some that came through my door this morning! I've only just put some of them on the turntables and they are :cooool:. They are all from Soul Jazz Records, which is my second tip for the day. If you like Reggae, Funk, Soul, Jazz, Latin Jazz/Funk - then you need to know about Soul Jazz Records.

>> This is the link to their website for a full album, artist and history rundown of some mighty musicians. <<

The first two came through my door today. The others are extensions and recommendations related to them. These pics are taken from the Soul Jazz album discography on their website. I hope I made it clear folks :D ALL from SOUL JAZZ. They are the nuts!

Chicago Soul
Many of you in the US will know of the major influence this city has had on the Blues and Soul music. This is a pretty mixed bag it seems. Some dancefloor scorchers and some sweet and smooth ones. I only skipped over 3 tracks and that's what I got.

Nu Yorica Roots!

Holy mother of god! This is awesome! There are many 'Nu Yorica' compilations from Soul Jazz. They are NOT to be confused with Kenny Dope's 'Nu Yorican Soul'. That was something different. These are explorations of Cuban music with American from the 60s to 80s. You get massive musicians on these collections like: Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Eddie Palmieri, Ruben Gonzales, Ray Barreto. Brilliant and hugely diverse collections these.

This is another in that series. There are at least two more which I have and there may be more. Excellent, very deep treasure troves these compilations. I 've been using them at gigs for at least 6 years now.

Barrio Nuevo

This is my favourite Latin Funk collection. Guess who it is from? Soul Jazz - again!

Universal Sounds of America

This is Jazz, Space Jazz. And mighty fine stuff at that. I've had this one for years. The notables on this are of course SUN RA (in my avvie) doing his immortal "Space is the Place". Art Ensemble Chicago is another epic jazz orchestra well worth checking out. Loads of others, check the track list:

That last pic includes the functions on the Soul Jazz Website. Buying from them is another way of record shopping wisely and legally.

If you don't mind nudity you can do a search for the album cover for Baby Woodrose - Blows Your Mind!.
About the music:
Aural Innovations #18 2002 said:
Baby Woodrose is Lorenzo, drummer from Danish heavy stoner/psych rockers, On Trial. Here, he plays all the instruments (guitars, drums, organ & electric piano), performing songs very much in the retro-garage blazing fuzz-psych tradition, more 1966 than either later-60s acid rock psychedelia, or the 70s heavy rock that inspired today's "stoner" scene. The influences of that era are abundant and pretty readily apparent, referencing everything from the Thirteenth Floor Elevators to the Strawberry Alarm Clock, by way of the Yardbirds, Electric Prunes, Seeds, Chocolate Watchband; even the Stooges and Sonics. The guitars are either twangy & reverb-drenched or maximally fuzzed, the vocals snarl in your face or ooze from the murk deep in the back of the reverb chamber; all of the expected period nuances are there. Not much in the way of "space" (nice seagull screams on "Living A Dream", though) or "progressive" (it's far too greasy) music here, but fans of earlier "head" music ought to get into this album. After all, how can you argue with a song like "Right To Get High"?

another scorcher from Soul Jazz Records.
a compilation of New york tunes from 78-82, all kind of neo-disco, neo-punk type.
and more my style of playing.
newyorknoisedancemu_101b.jpg

will did up some more of thier covers soon.

and just for the record, i dont like ripping them off, but out here in the desert, all we get to buy is the new Tiesto kind of %$^*, Trance or Progressive house.
proper soul-funk-jazz is VERY hard to find here.
so i use the net to know about new (and old) artists and then try to get thier stuff legally.
regarding digging the crates - thats the best part for me. i would never trust anyone with my taste. what if that record he thought i wouldnt like was DA BOMB?
and it usually is, due to my wide taste.
i do let them "GIVE ME ANYTHNG THAT IS NOT TRANCEY", thats about it.
and even then i reject 95 out of 100.

Houses of the Holy aint really that bad, is it?

I don't think the mods would mind that much...

Major bump, but why not? I got a whole load of record covers sent to me on email from a friend. They are examples of the WORST cover art ever.

Enjoy.....
