Clive1 - Monarch (Training ?) game

Yay! We finally got Monarchy!

Now, I'm not sure if we should have Anarchy during war, but having Monarchy will finally let us use those marvelous 10 3MC that we have without fear of an early Golden Age.

Unfortunately, we lost Ugarit :( Our friendly gift of the Barbarians.

Unfortunately, Ugarit is practically useless now because it should only be Pop1, and it is accross of Indian Territory. There seems to be absolutely no gain at all from retaking it. We'll miss you

I was going to say if we go Great Library then we get free Monarchy, but I realized you already got it. So I'm undecided on that point.

@MSTK, if Ugarit is pop 1, but still has a hittite citizen, then we can retake it

EDIT: Yay figured out how to do screenshots

A quick point re Grassy Beach.

If I was playing this game on my own I would probably switch to Courthouse. A sword currently costs 5 turns (2 left) and a courthouse is 12 turns (9 left) . GB is losing 4 out of 10 shields to corruption. Would this be a sensible move or not ? If not , why ?

Have we decided where to build our FP yet ?

I quite like either Madras or Delhi . If we have productive cities in that area we should be able build plenty of troops to block the narrow strip of land between India and Eqypt meaning we should be able to limit the movement of Egyptian troops later on .

Grasshopper, why do you wish to retake Ugarit? Eye on the prize - Madras.

Please sensei, tell me why our UU will not trigger GA when we're in Monarchy?

I haven't really crunched numbers like our mentors, but swords cost 30 shields. With courthouse, corruption is down 50% so we would lose 2 spt, generating 8. Swords would then take 4 turns. If we switch to courthouse, we lose 2 swords while we build the courthouse and only gain one turn per sword in the future. Plus we have to pay maintenance on the courthouse. Assuming my vacation addled brain is not pickled, I'd rather have the units now.

I like Lahore if we can get it (lots of BG). My thought (yes I had one) was to raze Delhi to prevent flips. Madras has too much jungle for quick benefit. Lahore also gives quicker production near the Russians (even though the Berlin Wall is rubblized and the COld War is over; they still appear to be our main enemy of the future) Maya can be bought as an ally to prevent Egypt expansion.

Note on corruption issues: This is a larger than standard map and our nation is commercial. On large maps corruption is less of an issue than on standard. Commercial nations incur reduced corruption so, again, corruption is less of an issue for the Hittites. Finally, corruption only affects gold, shields are affected by waste. A fine point but an important one. In C3C courthouses have a greater impact on corruption than waste so building a courthouse in a town like GB will not effect a change in the shield waste. It will increase the net gold per turn.

Note on research budget: Once a nation reaches a certain critical mass any science spending greater than 10% or less than 100% costs more than it is worth. (For the moment I am leaving the impact of luxury tax out of the equation)The only situation I can think of when that is not true is when you are trying to match research pace to a pre-build of a wonder, so that you learn the required technology at roughly the same pace you accumulate shields for the building. Over-spending on a technology you are likely to hold as a monopoly (as Literature was in this case) is not an advantage since it reduces the potential return on the investment by the amount of the overspending.

Note on tactical situation: Did we lose a sword or two in the Delhi force? When attempting a concentration of force attack it is critical not to divide the force. The two halves are always weaker than the whole.

Good points Bede - "One Step At A Time"... I was just about to tell the gang to slow down the pace of play a little bit. Unfocused warfighting is hazardous.

IMO, a mediocre plan that is well executed is usually better than a brilliant plan that is poorly executed. Take whatever time you need to have whatever discussions are necessary to "get on the same page" with respect to your war effort.

A note on Forbidden Palaces: they work differently in C3C. I'll let Bede fill you in in that, but it's usually better to build it quickly than to build it in a particular location.

looking forward to the answer. hypothetically - better to use 1st Gl for FP ar army?

@Bede: we didnt actually lose a sword, however attacking delhi with 2/4 swords is not optimal, so i had them wait to heal

EDIT: @Admiral: That usually depends on what is going on. If you have huge corruption problems, then go for the FP, and if you need military, go for the army

To answer mtgfreak's question:

"My questions are: do we want the GL, do we want to switch Allepo to GL, and finally, do we want to switch into monarchy"

Recommend switching Aleppo to Great Library, finish it and the war with India. Then pull the switch for a government change. The anarchy period will take some careful planning, however, to avoid civil disorder and starvation.

What government do we want, two are available to us, Monarchy now and Republic soon, either from the Library or as part of a peace deal with Gandhi?

Republic will complement the commercial trait and provide a big boost in income. Monarchy will balance it and give an advantage in long term warfare. So the question now becomes, what victory condition are we seeking?

The time for a Forbidden Palace is now, as we are over 2/3 of the
OptimalCityNumber so any new towns we build will be seriously corrupt and corruption will increase in our existing towns. So should we be lucky enough to get an MGL in the war with India, I would build the FP in Silk Forests. Otherwise I would wait till after the anarchy period and hand build it in Silk Forests.

My take on the FP: Early, sure that is somewhat important. However, even more important is that the FP city is you only other city without any waste/ corruption. So, for the ptw FP it was more important to put in in the correct location to get a second core, in C3C it's a horrible waste to not build the FP in your best city spot, whether it is far second ring or somewhere in the not totally corrupted outskirts. And Silk Forest is a mediocre city.

And the Great Library...do you really think you should build it? You do not need it, especially in a SG where you're trying to learn how to handle higher difficulties. General consense is that the GLib in Deity and Sid is much needed, in Demi it is still really helpful, but below?

mtgfreak - Played 6 turns of 10 - waiting for advice on Literature
Sir Clive - On deck
Bede -
viper275 -
MSTK-
Admiral Kutzov- Vacation until 3 Aug (since 8/3/04 will just confuse us English folks )

I am having my Cable TV (through which I get my broadband) switched to a Satellite dish today so I may have disruption to my internet access.

Hopefully I will be OK to play once mtgfreak has completed his turns.

If I have a complete **** on the internet re-connection than I will post a message from work before 10.00 Monday (London time) saying I will skip.
