Clive2 - Random Monarch

Byzantines won't trade Alphabet for anything!

I had two techs to offer at first, and they refused. I went for the wheel as well, and they beat me to it. Now we only have Pottery to offer them. I was hoping they would trade it to the Zulu so the price would go down, but the Zulu are dead broke and have been the entire game (yes, all 35 turns ;) ).

Please feel free to lurk and give advice. :)

Also, somebody might drop out and you might be able to fill in.

@DaveShack - sorry I neglected to update the thread that we were full - I will
do it now.

I am going to start playing in the next 30 mins or so - I will PM you if we
have any empty slots due to drop outs

We need to get some currags up asap we might get a tech lead if we meet other civs. I think we should expand to max then hit them.

The way I played my turns was to take out the Zulu asap, and concentrate on getting alphabet after that.

Preturn -

Check CRpMapstat

Byzantines- we can buy Alphabet , sell Pottery
Zulu - we can sell the wheel

Zulu have 0 gold.

Pottery and all our gold can't get Alphabet

Switch research to Alphabet (due in 14 turns)

2310 BC (1) Not much

2270 BC (2) Nothing

2230 BC (3) Cuzco spearman -> settler

IT - Zulu have Iron working but Wheel, CB and all our gold is still 'doubtful'

2190 BC (5) Nothing

IT try to get Alphabet from Byzantines and IW frm Zulus - no luck on either
Tiwanaku is size 2, due to grow in 7 but settler is due in 2.
Seeing as we can't produce settler until size is 3, switch to Granary

2150 BC (6) Nothing

IT still cannot get IW or Alphabet for everything we have

2110 BC (7) Nothing

2070 BC (8) Nothing

IT Cuzco produces settler , switch to granary

2030 BC (9) Settler starts moving towards floodplain wheat

1990 BC (10) Settler continues

We can now get Alphabet for Pottery from the Byzantines but seeing as
we will have Alphabet in 3 turns I am not sure whether we want to do this .
Will leave this up to ChuckDizzle to make the decision

Still can't get Iron Working from Zulus for everything we have.

Preturn: I find the situation much as everyone has said, not that I doubted. Set science back to 80%, but we still get alpha in 3 turns. Change Cuzco from granary to settler.

IBT: We are listed as the 4th most advanced nation in the world.

1) 1950 (bc): Send regular scout to check out Zululand and a Chasqui scout north to keep an eye on Theodora. Science set to 70%, still get alpha in 2 turns.

IBT: Zulu found Bedapi NW of Cuzco.

2) 1910 B.C.: Machu Pichu founded, production set to worker. Exploring.

IBT: Shaka demands withdrawal, but still polite.

3) 1870 B.C.: We get Alphabet. Set research to writing at 80%, we get writing in 17 turns. Maybe we can still try for a philosophy slingshot. Zulus now have the wheel. Still won’t trade IW. Jerks.

4) 1830 B.C.: Not much, really.

5) 1790 B.C.: Cuzco builds settler, set production to spearman.

6) 1750 B.C.: Small peninsula behind Zulu’s capital. Not much, though.

IBT: Caesarea founded

7) 1725 B.C.: Tiwanaku builds granary. Production set to curragh.

IBT: Shaka contacts and demands CB. As much as I desire to tell him he’ll need his own Ceremonial Burial in short order if he keeps that up, I heed the advice of our foreign advisor, and cave. We don’t have the troops for a war with Shaka. I recommend from now on, that Cuzco builds military and nothing but.

8) 1700 B.C.: Yawn.

IBT: Madrid builds Colossus.

9) 1675 B.C. Machu Pichu builds worker, set production to settler.

10) 1650 B.C. Cuzco builds spearman, set production to archer. Ollantaytambo founded, production set to temple. Ollantaytambo is where it is because it will serve as our forward base against the Zulu.

Save

A couple notes: We need to manage Machu Pichu in order to gain full effectiveness as a settler factory. If possible, we can build a reserve of settlers, and raze Zulu cities instead of capturing. Curragh coming next turn. It should be sent to the island to the east in an attempt to make contact.

During my turns, I was preparing for a war with the Zulu. I guess we got kinda side tracked with expansion (not that it is a bad thing, we do need to expand). Its a good thing you caved to the Zulu demands, since there is no question he would have declared war, and there is even a chance he has swordsmen now. Archers in Cuzco (maybe a second spear, if we have to) should be the priority, since I don't like the Zulu ;)

At least we can actually start exploring when we finish that Curragh.

Once we get writing, we should establish an embassy in Zimbabwe. Then we can see if the Zulu have Iron hooked up. Whoever's next can change the temple to Barracks if they like. That might actually be for the best, then Ollantaytambo can crank vet archers.

Nice turns ChuckDizzle !

Bit of a bummer we still can't get IW - I like swordsmen early in the game :)

Let's hope we have access to some Iron when we get it - we are not exactly over endowed with high land.

I'm thinking Ulundi might be an iron city. It would explain why they chose that loccation for their first new city.

Also, I would change the Temple to a barracks to have a second Archer city. I think we don't have a lot of chance of getting Philosophy first, so we might want to just go for Maths and Map Making, instead.

Got the save. Will play tomorrow.

Much as I don't want it to be true, I think Louis is right about Ulundi. Also, temple should go to barracks. He's right there, too.

lurker's comment: (You'll probably see me often.)

Agree with Louis XXIV on both points. I think you have a chance at getting Philosophy, though. We're making a good amount of gpt, only the Zulu could compete (Byzantines have 2 cities) and they don't have Alphabet yet.

Ulundi definitely could be an iron city, in which case you need early wars. Iron is very nice to have, especially if the AI has it, but you can do well without it. Just realize that your first target should be Ulundi so they can't make more swords (if it's iron, they obviously haven't done much with it, their military is average compared to ours.) I can see you're building archers, good job. Don't do it right now, there are other important things, but see if you can build Statue of Zeus sometime, that could help. If you don't plan on a Republic slingshot, I would research Writing==>Philosophy==>Map Making (explore other islands and be able to land things there)==>Mathematics.

Use the curragh to explore east, you can see something in the fog already.

You're agricultural, irrigate the deserts and feel free to found cities there (S-SE-SE of Bapedi looks good.) The oasis should be irrigated IMHO, that's 4 fpt and 1 spt (3 fpt in Despotism, but still not bad), which is the same as a mined wheat on a grassland square. Since I can't see many hills near anywhere but Ollantaytambo, the forests may even be your friends for working tiles.

Good luck :) .

Nice to hear from you Viper - useful advice as always !

Hopefully play another SG with you soon however I see you are playing well above Monarch at the moment so I will have to improce my game a bit before that happens :)
