My laptop shut down on me two days ago and I haven't been able to turn it back on. When I press the button, the button lights up for a moment and then nothing happens. Sometimes I press the button and it sounds like the computer is going to work, but then it shuts down. Can anybody shed some light? Do you need more information?

I really don't want to get a new computer

Check the battery. It may be overused and it is time to change.Try to turn on the pc without battery.

No, it couldn't have been that.
My battery had been working properly.

I'm pretty sure it was because it got too hot and so, it shut down.

Any beeps? Do the fans work? But I'm afraid you will either have to get it repaired or get a new one, sounds like something has gone over the Jordan.

My computer doesn't do beeps. The fan works (it has always worked).

What do you mean "over the Jordan"? It's gone too far??

If it is a Dell Precision from ~3-5 years ago the power button panel might be damaged/loose (They all used the same basic case). Try lifting off the panel and seeing if the connector at the right edge is connected. This happened to me two or three times with my previous laptop.

Apart from that, it could be a motherboard issue.

It's not a Dell.

If it's a Motherboard issue, is there any chance the computer will work again? :(

Did you try holding the power button down for a solid minute? I had one of my laptops go 'dead' and found out that the power cord shorted and the computer 'blocked' the power supply to protect the computer. I think I had to take the battery out while doing it, I think, can't remember the details.

Ok, I'm probably going to have end up buying a new computer.

How are these specs?
Specifications: Intel Core 2 Duo 160GB HDD 2GB RAM DVD +/- RW 9 Cell Battery 15.4" Screen XP Home Edition Wireless

What is the clock speed of the CPU? If you can get Vista, go with that instead. Looks good though.
Clock Speed? It's a laptop (and it didn't tell me).

And a Vista CD comes with it, but I wont upgrade it to Vista. I like XP. :)

Clock speed is measured in GHz on CPUs. All computers have a clock speed. Perhaps it told you a model number. It might say Core 2 Duo Txxxx. In that case you can determine the speed by that. However, any Core 2 Duo should be fine for either Vista or XP

Suit yourself.

I checked back and it sounds like this is what was done to fix my issue:

Remove the battery and AC adapter, then hold the power switch down for 30 seconds or so. That 'unlocks' the power supply block that the motherboard did. Put the battery back in and it worked just fine after that. Just had to buy a new power supply unit.

Didn't work

I'm gonna see if I can get someone to take a look at fix it.

If you can't recover the computer, at least you can recover the files off the hard drive. Or even put the hard drive in a new computer.

Is it dirty inside? Get a specialized person to open it up (unless you know how to without electrocuting yourself). One fella I know repairs computers and he says to use compressed air.
