Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

Not the taskbar but the system tray. I remember on Windows 98 using a little program that could do it but I don't remember the name of it.

Another question: Why is it that when my DVD drive gives me a coaster, it smells terrible? Is this normal or is something wrong with my drive?

EDIT: The CD, not the drive. I'd worry if it was the drive.

You're using your CD as a coaster? I googled CD, coaster, "gives me a coaster," and drive; in different combinations, but I have no idea what yer talking 'bout.

What happens is that more oftem than not, my CD burn fails -- thus "coaster." And I noticed that when this happens, the CD smells funny.

The only thing I can figure, is that it might be getting to hot, hence the smell.

How do I remove "Burn" from the Vista Explorer toolbar? I keep hitting it and opening my CD drive (since I have one of those "doors", it keeps hitting the door which I doubt is good for the drive.). I looked in Folder Options. Google tells me to use the group policy editor which I don't have.

EDIT: I tried googling "stop vista from autoeject cd drive" and got this. Looks like its hard-coded. The workarounds aren't very good. Oh well.

Help! Somehow I turned on narrator but I can't see it in the taskbar or system tray and I don't know how to close the darn thing! It's reading everything aloud and I can't shut it up!

EDIT: It suddenly disappeared. Strange.

I'm familiar with making simple programs on my TI-83 calculator, is there any software available for me to do the same kind of thing on a Windows laptop?

I'm not sure if this is it, but maybe this? (A bit outdated, though.)

Dumb question: Why do some people hate the .NET Framework? I googled it and got some vague stuff:

"it's a total resource hog"
"Given me so damn much trouble in the past and it's a pain in the ass to get rid of."
"I hate .net languages and imho 99.9% of all net-based applications suck."
"I had a similar error, but that was only when I decided that I hate .net,"

Now let's try another one.

"NET framework SUCKS ASSS. STOP [beep] PROGRAMMING IN IT!"

Uh...

EDIT: Finally, found something specific.

.NET has both its ups and downs. Its got some nice features over languages like Java and C/C++.

I can list some minuses though: Even though .NET is C#, its not actually using the standard C# so its not portable. You can be close to certain that your C/C++ and Java programs will at least work somewhat on a different system, while with .NET, its pretty much certain that it wont work. Mono, which allows porting of .NET apps to Linux and other OS' works quite well, but from what I hear, its quite behind the curve, lacking some newer and useful features.

I can also attest to .NET being bloated, in that it uses much more resources than it should be, and it takes a while to start up. Longer than the JVM at least.

I love the "I hate .NET languages and imho all net-based applications suck" -- Someone has no idea how many apps they use that are .NET. Additionally, Java and C++ are similar to .NET, with Java being practically syntax-compatible.

Im betting 99% of these people have not actually programmed using .NET

Its a decent framework if you're developing for Windows. Sure there are other alternatives, but .NET is just one tool, and a decent one at that.

Also I don't think .NET comes pre-installed with Windows and people are generally too lazy to download it, especially with XNA games since they require that framework too. But yeah .NET and C# are awesome

It may not be the right version, but its a simple matter to have your installer pull it down from MS servers and install it. Or prompt the user to install it before continuing with that installation.

Well the main problem I had was that it took forever to install. I had it running for a half-hour then it failed. Right at the end. LOL

EDIT: I have a huge PDF file, about 50 MB. Mostly pictures. Is there a free way to compress it with minimal loss of quality?

ANOTHER EDIT: I also have a smaller version but I'm not sure if it's the same. A way to compare them?

STILL ANOTHER EDIT: While you're at it, can you tell me the meaning of life?

I don't want to compress it in an archive. I want to reduce the size of the PDF file itself. (Thanks anyways)

edit: nvm
