Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread

@Zelig: Just realised I was thinking of my old banked/non-banked system.

Putting the best first is a carry-over from times when it mattered, but I still do it if it gives nothing more than peace of mind in a half an ounce of dependability.

What happens if you kill "System Idle Process"? My guess is that the CPU will jump to 100% but I don't want to try it.

"The operation could not be completed."

Ah, thanks. I was worried it would make the system unstable or something.

Okay, I got one. You can have more than one anti-spyware on your machine. Is it possible to have more than one anti-virus? Maybe a passive one/several and one active?

My mom used to have two antiviruses on her computer. It didn't work too well and she ended up wiping it.

Alright help me out here.

My windows Media 11 player does not play audio not video whenever it is embedded in a webpage. I have Windows XP and Firefox; i have all the plug ins and extensions required. When i wish to view a video i get a blank windows media player that is responsive but says "ready" in the lower left hand corner and whenever i click play it flashes "opening media..." for a quarter of a second and then goes back to "ready." I can wait for an hour and nothing will change. I can't seem to find any security restrictions that would disallow me from watching media player and am using my home computer. Neither the Mozilla or the Microsoft support sites have helped. So WTH?

If it's embedded, I don't believe Windows Media Player is involved. It's either Flash or Java within FireFox. And that typically means that you are adblocking it ;) So go into the No Script (if you have that) or the ad blockers and allow that page.

See if that helps.

If it doesn't, well FF's greatest weakness is playing java and flash. So get the "IE Tab" extension and the play the clips in that.

There is nothing blocking Java or Javascript. The curious thing is it worked for some time up until about early December, so obviously there must be a way for it to work again. Actually on the firefox support site, the test video worked fine. But neither This nor This do while they did a few months ago

Error - The playback of this movie requires a Microsoft Media Server (MMS) protocol source plugin which is not installed.

Yes, it's *possible*. But they tend to interfere with each other. Even if only one is "active", it will report false positives on the other(s), because they will have virus signatures (so they can check for viruses).

Figured it might be something like that.

that's not the error i get. I wish it was as simple as installing a plug-in!
I downloaded the IE tab add-on but can't figure out how to use it...

When you have that installed, there's a tiny firefox icon at the lower right. click that in the tab and that tab will turn into IE

Can a faulty motherboard fry a HDD? I got a temporary motherboard today to test some of my components and my HDD died while I was testing. It seemed to die upon a reboot. It had also worked on the same PSU for the last month and a half with no problems at all ( and yes I was careful when plugging it in and that whole shebang )

Physical destruction is unlikely IMO and is not typical, but is possible. Could it be file system or partition table corruption?

Not a question in itself, but I spilled water on my laptop a day ago. Advices given on the net are: switch it off, hairdry it (mildly), let it dry in a warm and dry room for a few days, pray. Sadly I thought I cleaned it and switched it on 2 minutes after the spill. It crushed on me while booting and all the lights were lit since then. I could not even use the boot button. So, I have reomoved the battery and let it dry. I am still hopeful. Any comments (including on extracting data) are appreciated. Share your experiences with water too, if you had them.
