Computer reboots only when connected

Running Windows XP.
The machine reboots once I connect to the internet. If I don't connect to the net it will run for hours w/ no problems. Once I connect it seems to reboot within about 30 minutes. Usually within about 10 minutes.


I dug up an old IDE HD and reinstalled Windows on it. It stayed on line long enough to get SP3 & the SATA drivers for the other HD.

Then starts the reboot stuff again only when I'm on-line.

Any ideas?

No idea, and that's really bizarre.

Googled this: http://www.devhardware.com/forums/p...ots-after-connected-to-internet-120625-2.html Conclusion was modem was a USB device and the USB interface was to blame somehow. Possible solution would be changing the USB port, updating USB drivers, just getting a new modem, etc..

Another though might be power output somehow, like maybe the modem drains to much power causing a reboot. Kind of freakish.

Done virus scans?

If you get a BSOD when it reboots (a blue screen), try to get the info of the BSOD---the number code.

Modem is not USB. Modem is directly into NIC. No router.
Done virus scans. Using AVG. It is updated as far as I can tell.

I'm wondering that. I did all the software fixes my (addled) brain can come up with.

Could be an IRQ conflict, try moving your network card into a different slot.

About 3 years old. But the HDD I have in there now is probably 6 (Or more) years old. The re-boot issue started when I had the 3 y/o HDD in there though.

I think the network card is integrated into the system board. I'll have to check when I get home this AM.

Also, if it was an IRQ conflict why did it wait 3 years to start flaking out?

Do you have your pc set to automatically reboot on BSOD? If so, turn that off. This may be a BSOD happening but it goes away so fast you dont notice it.
The NIC seems to be flaking out, but you wanna try to check if Windows is crashing or just rebooting. If its just rebooting, and since you reinstalled Windows, Id rule out driver problems and go right to something wrong on the motherboard.

Hmm... 3 years isn't really old enough for me to suspect old age... But it does sound like a hardware thing. If you have wifi or can borrow a friend's wifi to test it or can connect to the internet via usb modem, try that, see if it still reboots, in which case I suggest connecting to the internet via whatever method worked...
