Just played an interesting game where my conquistadors could settle on the same continent as my capital..although it's on another half of the continent which is separated by a mountain range.
I imagine the game considers a different continent as one which cannot be reached by only land movement - a mountain range could therefore block this and make the other side seem that it is a "different" continent.

anyways, screenshots:

Note that the continent is split by the mountain range next to monaco.

My conquistador is able to settle in the area south of monaco. (I actually settled the 3 other cities via conquistadors earlier in the game as well)

Not sure if this is an absolute "true" bug since you still wouldn't be able to settle in those spots without optics, but still it's not really a separate continent as it's part of the same landmass.

And yes, that was a conquistador that I forgot to upgrade even in the modern era - before you ask :D

Save here too if you're not convinced by the screenies. :)

The bad thing about conquistadors is that they encourage you to get rid of them rather than upgrade them. Before that wouldn't matter because you couldn't upgrade cavalry to anything but now you can. This just makes a waste of a unit since settlers are cheaper and less valuable.

I'm inclined to think that this is not a bug. I couldn't find a formal definition of the word "continent" either in the manual or the Civilopedia. Also, on the real-life Earth, most of the continents are actually connected to other continents.

True, a mountain range is more of a barrier between 2 lands than sea is, it really depends on how hard it is to cross, New Zealand is part of Oceana even though it is separated by see.

Continent areas are pre-assigned when the map is created, and having connecting continents is not that uncommon in certain map types. If you tool around in world-builder, you'll get a sense on how the continent mechanic works.

What I think is funny... For the New World scenario, Conquistadors cost less to purchase than Settlers...
