Should there be a contest of the decade, in the third week of January?

On the one hand it is the end of the decade. On the other the competitions have been going on for only four years, so there will be less things to choose from.

Personally im not sure if there should be one or not :)

I think that would be kinda cool.

I voted 'no'. This is not a music mag of tv channel that desperately needs to fill pages or airtime, is it?
The monthly competitions have a purpose; they put the spotlight on current work, and by doing so are supporting it. The competition element is less important than the display element.
A competition of the decade is a very different thing. Do you really want to get out Bebro's chariots or Orthanc's boats again, and compare it with Sandris' units? Awesome units, but what's the point of trying to determine which unit has really topped the lot?
Oh, it's gonna be very easy choosing, of course... :sarcasm:

Since the oldest graphic will be four years old, it wont really be a contest between that different levels of creative ability, apart from the factor of their creator's strenghts.
By your logic not even the established yearly contests have a meaning/should be there. But i think they are nice to have. Now having three competitions in a row can be an issue, although we could avoid that by having the decade contest be held in the second week of February :)

Either way it could be interesting. :)

What would compete - all the winners of the yearly contests, all the winners of the monthly contests, or all files ever entered?

I have to say personally that while the monthly and annual competitions are fun, a decade-based one seems a bit odd, given that (a) there isn't a decade's worth of entries, (b) there is unlikely to be another decade-based competition ten years from now, for obvious reasons, (c) people get het up enough about the competitions as it is, and I think some people are likely to feel slighted if someone else is crowned "unit maker of the decade".

Only the winners of the yearly contests would compete. They are at least four (iirc at no year did we have a double or more winners)

I accept your points Plotinus. I was not in favour of this either fully. The main problem is that i too doubt there will be another winner of the decade, so we may as well not have a single one either...

Yes, I find the yearly contests less useful, but it's nice to round the year off that way, I do understand that.
I thought you were thinking about including every unit, by the way. 'Contest of the Decade' sounds bigger than comparing 4 yearly winners.

I'd say yes ... if for no other reason then to get a refresh on the great works done in the past 4 years (in case I missed a d/l there).

I think that the point that most probably we will not have a second contest of the decade is enough to negate the need for a first one.

A mod can close the thread if they want to, or erase it.
Thank you everyone for your views :)

It all depends on how Civ 5 and Civ 6 turn out. But it is likely that if either one is done fairly well, that Civ 3 will eventually fade out and become a shelved classic.

No-no-no. Let's have a 5-year contest. You can do it a theme contest with Soviet flags and Stalin portraits. 5-Year-Plan--> 5-Year-Contest

Well, civ4's come, the masses are playing it and us dedicated idiots are still hanging onto it.

Well for the love of Pete, let's make sure this year that the unit of the year contest doesn't coincide with the unit of the month (December) contest, as I've seen happen before. The unit of the year should close on superbowl sunday, or thereabouts.

As for Unit of the Decade, yes there should be a contest, but in 2014, when a decade has actually passed. Otherwise, we might as well have a unit of the century contest. So I don't know how to vote. On the other hand, I won't mind having a little Five-year Gala (I love a party! - on what date, though?) that includes a contest.

IMHO lets have various categories for the celebration of the end of the decade. For example, Best all round Unit Maker(s), Most Units Created, Best All Round Scenario Maker, Best All Round Graphics Maker, Most Helpful When it Comes to Tutorials, Best All Round Mod Maker, etc. And to make more options have a Grand Prize Winner, First Runner up, Second Runner Up, Third Runner Up, etc.

This way you get more categories to choose from and "more" winners to choose from because there have been some fabulously created material made by some wonderful people that it is impossible to point out one particular individual and say "You're the Best Ever!"

Can we have a "Dragonlance deity" category? :cooool:

Such a competition would be biased towards the newer work.

I think it would be cooler to have something like the Oscars, where a panel of experts (yeah I know it's elitist, so what?) choose different creations for different categories.

I have another sugestion, instead of a contest for unit of the decade, why not just a pinned thread (possibly closed) showing every contest winner since the beggining? Updated once per month with the last month's winner.

Umm....
Do you mean this?

LOL
