Basically, the way I decided to get better in Civ is to pick a scenario and keep replaying it until I win a game. So far I have been able to win standard size, pangea map game as Alexander by conquering 5 opponents and making the Ottomans my vassals. I have been trying to win a game on the continents map, but I am having difficulty. The victory I go for usually depends on what civilization I am. The typical scenario is that I usually am kicking the other 2 civilizations on my continent's behind and then Mansa Musa or Hathesput or some builder civ will pop out of nowhere with a caravel and be like "sup?" with a nice 2-8 tech lead. I usually quit at that point.
In my last game, I was the Ottomans, I started on a continent with Frederick and Kublai, I very quickly conquered some of Kublai's land and razed the Mongolians remaining cities into history. I was going for a domination (not conquest) win because I was expansive and organized, but when the other continent discovered me I decided to go for a space race. I was doing pretty decent, and I was able to barely keep up in tech race by just b-lining for Liberalism (nailed the slingshot) and then Physics. I didn't have any magnificent production cities so I was getting beaten to every single wonder I tried, except for a few early ones. However, I did conquer the Great Wall when I took out Kublai.
When Hatchesput (who was on the other continent) began running away with a 2000 point lead, I decided the Ottomans have had too much and declared war on her. I sent over 4 Galleons (before declaring) to her continent (took me forever to build) complete with about 5 cannons, 2 trebs, 4 Janisseries, and a Rifleman. I had 3 more Riflemen coming, but lagging behind my glorious Ottoman fleet. Anyway, I touch down in egypt and I am greeted by 3 uberstacksofwtfdoom and my forces are destroyed in 3 turns, despite putting up a great defense.
How can I compete with civilizations who I don't meet until they develop optics?
