A nice little detail was that the continents have now names.

Could it affect some sort of colonizing civic? Or some leaders ability?
Or maybe someone like Spain loves to pop cities to other continents.

Anyway I like it a lot. The game is seems to have many cool tiny details.

Also hoping for an map generation option where all "European" civs start on same continent, Asian on same etc.

I am pretty sure it's for flavor only. The one we saw, Lemuria, is a mythical continent from the Indian Ocean. It's like Atlantis.

Well... actually. Foreign Trade Civic gets a boost if you "discover a second continent" which begs to question what is a continent, so it is possible we may see them being utilized.

At the very least, it serves as a backbone for other expansion features (off topic but a Colonization-based expansion is long overdue)

To be honest, while Lemuria is a nice historical touch, I don't like this name being in game as it sounds very weird for me despite knowing its "original" meaning.

I liked seeing a return to naming locations on a map. Being able to declare parts of your geography within your borders will be a nice touch. But I am curious how you get to the point of naming a continent with other civs beside you on it...

I wonder if we will get to name continents ourselves or if we only get random mythical names like Lemuria, Atlantis, Mu, Thule, Lyonesse, Avalon, Hesperides, etc.--or perhaps a mix of mythical, former (Zealand, Sundaland, Beringia, etc.), and real continents...Whatever the case, I think it's a nice touch, and one that can have a variety of purposes in game. Maybe this time Poland will stop founding cities in Antarctica. :p

It affects Teddy Roosevelt's Agenda: his dislike for aggression affects only his own continent.

I hope Firaxis have a way to reasonably split the continent. Because if the game regards continent as "continuous piece of land" then he will act strangely in Pangaea or several flat maps or Archipelago map.

I heard Civ 5 consider a different texture set with the same landmass to be different "continents". But I am not sure if it is true.

Firaxis could get more name from mythological figure from cultures across the world, or constellation name from those with astronomy (Mayan, Arabic, Chinese, etc.)

I mentioned this in the T.R. thread. This is a pretty BIG feature addition that appears to be trivial on the surface but actually is not.

It's not like they gave us a MS paint tool to doodle borders and rename rivers, the game is actively tracking who (Civ) and presumably which city is on what continent.

It has allowed them to develop Teddy Roosevelt in such a way that based on previews, his agenda is that he will hate anyone who tries to start wars in his continent.

AI can now understand where their neighbourhood is, where most of their cities are, and which cities on which continents they specifically are targeting.

They will also likely be able to understand more complex global/grand strategic concepts like 'home front' vs. 'far off colony' ; and they could if programmed systematically target Civs on only certain continents. It's a huge change.

But I was surprised most people were only discussing the continent name shown in the video. :crazyeye:

I would assume all continguous land forms will be given a name, so those largish islands off the coast of a pangea would be considered continents or at least have their own names.
Computers are good at sorting and counting, I'm sure it can be taught to look at a piece of land called Continent E with 20 tiles and know it's a smaller piece of land than Continent A with 800 tiles.

When can we all start collectively hollering for a robust colonization mechanic? I mean with localized happiness, and a metric distinguishing between domestic & foreign lands, it's the most logical next step right? & of course robust barbarian diplomacy.

What that would entail is beyond me, but I'll leave it to Firaxis & or the mod community

moysturfurmer: Yeah if it's not in the vanilla version, it's definately something for Expansions or modders to do.

Another cool Agenda for someone like Shaka: "Kill everyone trying to establish cities to his continent from another one" or "bonus in combat against people from other continents". So many possibilities.

Also I would like for England and Japan to be able to start from a large island, one that could hold 2-3 cities.

We know TR Agenda is tied to continents, so we know its not just aesthetic, hopefully Civ6 generates continents including islands, it was always to weird that an island 1 tile across from the continent was its own continent.

It also gives me hope for the inclusion of colonies.

I doubt we'll get colonies.... until the first expansion pack.

Yeah you are most likely right, after all they focused on bringing all the civ5 mechanics back first.

However we could still get some civic cards for overseas bonuses, like trade income or city growth, it would make sense for naval empires anyway.

I'm pretty sure leader Agendas are unique AI behaviours and aren't related to bonuses

Random hidden agendas, probably. But Qin Shi Huang's Historical agenda is that he dislikes anyone who builds more Wonders than him, and the Chinese unique abilities (Builders can rush Wonders, Builders +1 Build charge) boost Wonder production, so... :D

Holy crap good point!
This actually makes it an even bigger possibility that Civ starting locations can now more easily be partly based on continents. England and Japan could very well have starting location scripts which say that get their own tiny continent...

To the point of naming continents, I would like to see it work something like this:
- The first Civ to meet all other Civs on their continent is allowed to name the continent :king:

OR, control 75% of a continent, you get to rename it.
