Cookbook #1 (Sally, Immortal)

Soo last playing day ;)

Before discussions start, i would like some opinions on timelines.
Too long? Not easy to set for me, normal that we have players like SnB who enjoy the micro aspect and like having several days,
and some who would prefer talking about their games quicker.

My temporal solution for that was starting the deity cookbook, so we can have 2 running in sync.

Games

For me personally, a whole week for play is abit too much. The week of discussion I get to partake in wonderful discussion, but the playing week is a long slow week of silence, with glimpses of fun when the saves trickle in. :)

But I realize that some need the whole week to find a day to partake in the play and I wouldn't want to miss out on their company.
And really, if a deadline of a month is what it takes to produce saves of top notch quality that I can learn bits and pieces from, I would gladly wait. :)

Sorry been rather distracted. See what I can do.

A whole week for 25 turns is a bit too much for my liking as well. I would like to get the next turnsts a bit quicker and discuss the saves too. But on the other hand there is also no rush for me. I have the new NC game, aswell as the games from Lains thread. personally i would prefer 4-5 days / turnset.

But i do not really mind too much if other players need more time. I rather wait a bit longer so that all remaining players have enough time to finish their turnset.
Besides i tried to play the Deity game with buffy Mod. Game tells me it needs restart to load the mod when i want to load the map. But unfortunately it does not start again after the game closes. Any solutions? reinstall buffy mod?

Not sure, I use to have problems too with others saves but no problems here. You have latest Buffy version? How do you start game? I just double click in windows file manager and mod load automatic and everything is fine.

@Fippy As for the duration of turnsets, also think it is too long. Dropout rate might increase. The discussions/analysis may go as long as needed. They can be quite good.

I was suprised that so few used SnBs save too.
I guess that alot of votes for #1 went to the save that voters didn't really want to play from themselves?

That, and sampsas save really did have the horrid problem that I had too, losing two warriors that early in the game can really set you back if you are unlucky.

I appreciate the 1 week timeframe, not because I usually need the whole week to play the turnset, but because on my schedule it's hard to budget out 4 hours or so to think about civ over just a couple of days. So I'm ok with a shorter timeframe, just worried that sometimes I won't be able to submit a save. Making the sets a few turns longer would be ok too, I feel like once you're in the rhythm playing for 10 more turns isn't so difficult.

As for why few people played sampsa and my saves, I think they're pretty solid but somewhat boring: the one "special" thing this map has is the stone, and though you can certainly reach the mids from either of those 2 saves, mscellaneous's save gives the possibility of exploiting it more. Ditto for olafeson: the possibility of strong research from the outset is an exciting possibility that can be quite persuasive.

Okay for now i plan to use 6 days per set next, and increasing turn number by a bit.
1 day less time should still be fine (for Swordnboard i.e.),
some more turns played should give you more to check during those days.

As long as the voting system is about assigning points to the 3 Best Saves (+1 extra from Fippy) without an agreement on what is Best, it should not be a surprise ending up with a couple of, more or less, unplayed saves.
A voting system were each player have one vote to each of a set of strategies, could have some merit. As here, a player could f.ex. give one vote on best stonecity approach, one vote to best maximum expansion approach and one vote for best (short term) commerce approach.
(Edit: and also category best seafood approach. @Undefeatable , would have loved to see how your save worked out.

But what do I know, perhaps it is all about winning most votes.

Another thing I am pondering about Cookbooks (new to it), is it all about finishing game the earliest date regardless of VC? Personally I may like to see how a well executed Space Colony is done by the best players.

As I would play this if I was alone, I would first try to dominate my home continent. Then when I meet the other continent(s), I'll make a plan on what VC I have the highest chance of succeding with. If the chance is somewhat equal between different VCs, I'll go for the one that is less micro intensive or most enjoyable, depending on mood.
If I fail to dominate my home continent, I'll start planning from there instead.

Yes, agree. Taking out home continent is first priority, but then what? I was thinking; Pyramids, science, space. My save was not great but was surprised that it was downgraded due to little chopping. Isn't national park specialists and after, one turn space part chops regarded as good play?
It seems that Best Play currently is chopping every forest as soon as possible into settlers then stomp all AIs. Cuirasser Rush. Amen.

@Gumbolt
Did you play up to 1000 BC (turn 75)?
Only saves up to turn 70 are allowed now.
If so, do you have an autosave from turn 70?

Doh! I have the T71 save. :(

Probably best to exclude me. Not going to replay to get it to turn 70. As Fippy suggested no reloads.

Okay start discussing your games ~~
(if anybody will still submit late until tomo early europe time, nps will count)

Too tired for more, but thought i can give you that famous PR green light.
Gumbo T71 works, excluding for 1t? nopes..

Well... This was even harder to judge than the last turnset. :)

I played from Swordnboards save, and tried to continue in his footsteps, continuing to keep the empire as lean as possible, settling cities and claiming land.
From what I see, I am the only one who got the fish spot up and running. Undefeatables reasoning for the city spot I like. Fish is a nice foodsource, and this site will help develop a few cottages for the capital, later on with a lighthouse it can run two specialists, or simply grow in population on coast, preparing for a whipfest.
I just recently settled the stone/wheat city and have a monument done there now.
I think it would be most prudent to improve the wheat first, but I could be wrong.
The capital is prepared for whip overflow into pyramids with a granary in place and a worker at 29/60 and a settler at 33/100.
This in coordination with stone-city, where chops can land in pyramids.
It seems my luck with barbs are continuing, since I have gotten two barb cities spawned up in the jungle!
A possible plan is to settle a city close by these and chop a madrassa for a somewhat easy cultureflip.

@Lain If I haven't missed anything, your save is the only one with a red fist. Shaka wants to kill something. Probably Qin? What are your thoughts on this, good or bad?
I like it when the AIs are fighting each other, but if they do, they don't build up their cities for you which could be bad?

@Olafeson
You built both SH and TGW, kind of impressive. But I think I would rather have the failgold tbh. :) Perhaps the wall could be nice for a GSpy, but there isn't really a need for alot of monuments? How do you reason around this?

@Swordnboard Congrats! You managed to suprise me again with city placement. :) This time with Kufah. I might have figured this city spot out as a filler spot much later in the game.
I don't feel as impressed with this city as I was the last turnset though, should I be? :)

@krikav

I had a vague plan in my head when i finished the SH and TGW. First of all i wanted stonehenge for the culture in the city itself so i would get a border pop for the forests. So i could chop TGW with these forests. With the GW i do not need to worry anymore abotu the barbs too, which is kind of nice, it is convenient. I agree that failgold would maybe have been the better play, but it has been ages in my deity games since i got SH and TGW. can not remember the last time actually. Also a monument for free is nice, ofc you could just whip it , but if you already have one, you can settle maybe a bit like with the creative trait with food in the seond ring instead of first ring. Could allow better city placement.

So i just felt like grabbing them, they are nice wonders. Main reason for finishing them both are the GPP:gp:. This is only immortal difficulty and i think we can try out some fun strategies who would probably not work (or barely) on deity.

Getting early Great Person for settling or bulbing together with Rep opens up a lot of possibilities. We could fund or own religion(maybe Confucianism, Chrisitanity, taoism, maybe even judaism) if we choose to. Then get a second Great Prophet ( with help of madrassa) and build the shrine, convert Shaka and Qin to our religion. Usually there is no great benefit in getting a own religion but in this game i doubt shaka or qin will found one, so we could get these 2 jokers to friendly, get happyness and maybe a lot of gold with holy city shrine. It also opens up the possibility for a lot of :culture:. Maybe some people want to play and achieve a cultural victory. Would be possible.

So that is the main reason, i dont think i need the failgold to outtech immortal A.I. . I rather want to play some fun strategies and finally make use of a own religion again. Maybe even building the AP myself and win AP victory. Cheesy i know but kind of fun.
