I've often wondered the same thing. If your name is Richard, other common "short" versions exist, like Rick, Rich, or Ricky. Although I wouldn't like that last one, either.

Hey hey... my great-great-grandfather from Sweden was named Adolf . While some people TODAY might find the naming of their kid "Adolf" inappropriate and politically incorrect (because ONE man ruined it for everybody 50-odd years ago), the name itself has a long, proud history that predates Herr Hitler by centuries. Not that *I* would name my kid that, I wouldn't want him subject to relentless teasing or worse....

Names I like include (for males) Solomon, Justin, Benjamin, Thor, and Gregory; (for females) Audrey, Helen, Josephine, Emily (or Chaucer's Emilye, as in "Emilye the Shene" (sp.?)), Diana, Dominique, Shannon, Tess, Jasmine, and Rhiannon.

Names I DON'T like are generally "word" names like Destiny, Flower, Moon, Chastity, Judge, etc. Just not my thing, call me a traditionalist....

And I DO agree about Bertha, Hortense, etc.--a gal named that will probably end up anorexic in order to "prove" something. Which is too bad, but that's how it is....

I used to know a guy named Ashley. I guess they are what they call unisex names. Wouldn't it be more appropriate to call them bisexual names?

Some unisex names are more commonly used by one sex overy the other. I would put Kelsey and Ashley in that category.
