Hey, can anyone give me a decent pieve of software so I can write DVDs to my HDD, possibly as movie files, but preferably as mountable images?

I have a large DVD collectionm at home, but when I go back to uni, I want to write everything to my harddrive so I don't have to waste space and transport.

Cheers.

VLC will write the DVD's as video files. if you want something like mountable images, I think you can use DVD decrypter to decrypt the DVD and then create an ISO using something like Alcohol 120% or PowerISO. Legality of doing that though, is less than 100%. (In the sense that you're gonna be decrypting the dvd, which is technically legal but not legal )

It's perfectly legal, though it may not be compatible with copy protection.
Hence my 'its legal but not'
You're allowed to copy the dvd to make a backup, but in order to do that you often have to break the copy protection which is illegal. Catch 22 eh?

Youd still end up having to lawyer up which is still expensive. Im not saying you'd lose, but it wouldnt be cheap.

I use a combination of SmartRipper and DVD Decrypter, depending on which one balks. They're both a bit outdated, but work well. On older copy protection.

I'm not so sure about the ISO part, cos I usually turn it into an AVI file (good quality-filesize ratio).

Maybe if you want to save space, DVD Shrink can help. You can use it with burning software, it says. But you have to search for it, cos it's not allowed to host it.

Though I can vouch for SmartRipper, DVD Decrypter, and avi.NET, I haven't tested DVD Shrink. Heard it was good though.

Britain is even worse on this issue.

Not really; as long as you're not uploading, you noone really cares.
The max they can really do atm is force you to write a letter of apology.

If the program runs from an iso, then there is no copy protection to speak of.

Well, I was talking more in the region of, uh, 50 or so?
There is no realistic threat of a lawsuit.

DVD Decrypter still works great. Not that I would know obviously. *shifty eyes*

I thought it was impossible to get online but apparently that link aimee provided still works. Get that before it is gone.

Googling it gives hundreds of download links. They shift around a lot, buts it still out there. Worst case, you're gonna have to try to find a torrent ( its a free program, so this isnt illegal really )

Better yet, just download the DVD ISO images from the internet. Many of those 50 must be available. That's technically illegal, but you already paid for the content, and who cares?
Well, perhaps not a good idea, yet, in the UK. But where I live... there are at least some advantages to living in a country where no one with a competent lawyer can get convicted of anything.
