I was surprised how disappointed I was with all the influences begin equal in the early game (before founding the 2nd city). I knew it would happen of course, but I think it had more impact on the game than I expected.

I'm on the fence what to do about it, but here are a couple of ideas.

Give each team a natural bonus on their area of influence. (The cultural team gets a bonus to cultural influence, etc).

Give each player some influence points to spread around the five areas as they like. (A player could decide to spread his influence equally, or to sacrifice some cultural influence to get more scientific influence, etc). This could be interesting and gives players a pretty meaningful game decision to make, but adds some complication. Perhaps there could even be ways to earn additional influence points throughout the game.

Neither! Simplest is best. The problem goes away with the second city anyway.
 
I think giving each player influence points would make it too complicated and you'd end up with people making mistakes on their voting etc. Doesn't really need much tweaking IMO but I think the natural bonus would be more appropriate.
 
Option 1 seems the most sensible and would reinforce the point of clans as well as destiguishing them more.
 
A natural team bonus to their influence type sounds reasonable and natural considering the emphasisation of particular teams. (How about the Gaiko equivalent though?)

However I think that this should not come at an expense of base influence like we have in the current game. It should simply be a bonus to a particular field
 
The Gaiko would get the bonus in economic influence, because so much of diplomatic victory in CiV is bribing city-states. (An because after Bunka get Cultural, Kagaku get Science, and Shihai get military... economic is what's left!)

Of course, the next game would not be Japan again - the clan names are used here simply for convenience.
