COTM 17 - Pre-game Discussion

I think the complaint occurs when you're fighting a war that starts your GA. Once the GA starts you can't build anymore GS, which slows getting any new attackers to the front by 50%.

Well, it wasn't a problem building more GSwords. M Infantry weren't available yet. And the upgrade to M Infantry later was what I wanted. I wanted the extra hit point for attacking invaders. I was already building knights.

@Denyd: Yeah, that happened to me in the Aztecs game when I got punk'd by the Egyptians. It pretty much ruined my plans.

The slingshot is a good idea. However, at Emperor level I'm not sure if I'll be able to research fast enough and be the first to Philosophy. Especially since the Celts don't start with Alphabet. I like my chances a little better with the Gallic Swordsmen. There is also another advantage to building a lot of Warriors. The more military you have, the less likely it is that the aggressive Emperor AI will attack you!

I don't plan to do any research after Iron Working. One of my obvious targets will be the owner of the Great Library. Somebody mentioned the potential lack of resources. If that's the case, then I'm screwed! My backup plan will be to use the religous trait and build some culture.
It is very possible at emperor, especially when you have a river and some wines which give a nice commerce bonus. Becoming republic earlier means more gold in the long run (of course i will stop research after learning Republic). The slingshot should be enough to buy Map Making and Iron Working and that should be enough to win the game unless the continents are very far apart (In this case i would need to research Currency, Theology, Astronomy and Navigation). I won't bother researching chivalry and feudalsim because GS is the best unit before cavalry.

wow, i'm really surprised there's so much discussion going on here without even a picture. i personally am not very good at envisioning things based on only description... will waiti till karasu gets time to put up a picture. :)

Okay, I don't think it's been said yet, but...

We all remember Kuningas' 100k win on COTM15, right? Well Celts have to be the best possible civ for beating that time. Agricultural, religious, and a killer UU -- I don't think I'm the person to try for it, but Feudalism whipping for an 100k win (or for just plain production, really) seems a very powerful strategy.

And what will everyone do if Karasu changes the civ last minute???

We'll cut the wheatlands and all that's on it :mischief:

Well, that last minute is getting closer and closer! Prego, Karasu, a picture and a commitment! On the double!

That's an interesting idea. I have a question for those who go for 100K. Is the Temple of Artemis a must build wonder for 100K? At first it seems like it might as you would get instant temples in all conquered lands. The instant culture would be incredible! However, it is fairly expensive at 500 gold, and becomes obsolete with the discovery of Education. Is it worth it to build? I've never built this wonder. What happens after Education, do you lose all of the free temples? Or does it just stop producing new ones?

One idea for 100k is to do some early conquering with Gallics and secure your continent. Next, start feudalism and subsequent poprushing on your own continent. At the same time, send your Gallics across to the other continent to grab the ToA and then start poprushing over there.

This assumes there are 2 main continents which is normal...but this map design probably isn't very normal. :p

I hope you win the Conquest award this time Headblend! (The one for fastest win, not fastest loss that is) ;)

If this was Monarch or Regent I might have been tempted to do another 2 City challenge..

:) Best of luck and remember:.......

Yeah, it gives a free temple in every city on the continent, but they all disappear with Education. IIRC, Kunnigas never bothered to get Education, so it wasn't a problem. For the price, most players seem to go with capturing it, though I recall a great date Ronald got building it himself.

As to beating Kunnigas' awesome date, a good civ might not be enough. The map for cotm15 was the biggest meatball I've ever seen!

Oh, definitely. Not only was it the biggest meatball, it also had a fantastic starting spot for pumping out settlers (two 4-turn settler factories post-despotism!) My observation is that if its going to be done, the Celts seem the ideal civ to do it with; even if the time is not beaten, they still should lend to some strong win dates.

In fact, why not! I really need to improve on my early-game warmongering tho

I think I'll do the same. It'd be fun to compare results, as long as we don't take it too seriously, although my most abyssmal performances happen when I have these pregame head-to-head arrangements  So, let's not go head-to-head! I'll just play, and leave open the option of changing my mind.

Early war is one of my weaknesses too. My crystal ball shows a great temptation to go for a full-bore farmer's gambit, which falls apart when we're sneak attacked by a snarly emporer-level neighbor... I'm going to be on my guard against some kind of 2000BC disaster.
