COTM 17 - Pre-game Discussion

I think I'll do the same. It'd be fun to compare results, as long as we don't take it too seriously, although my most abyssmal performances happen when I have these pregame head-to-head arrangements

Me, too. So we'll aim for comparing results, but if we swap to something more opportune then it won't be a big deal. Certainly others are willing to join in as well, with the condition that they also don't take it too seriously.

I'm sure many people will do some early (Gallic) warmongering in this game. Whether they write spoilers or not is the question.

Oh, I can't resist this.

I thought I go for space, and then conquest would be most fun, but 100K sounds just fine :D

I'm starting to feel like the most fun xotm of all has been saved for right before the release of civIV!:bounce:

@Jove

Thinking of congratulating you on same number of posts, but then I have 1 more :p

Now I'm thinking hard to derive some devious strategies to improve on my GOTM38 win, which btw was far better then 1610 :spank: (it was 1600 :D )

Well, now we're even again on the spam count. :p Congratulations yourself!

Sorry to get your win date wrong. I've edited my faulty post. Good luck on your next one. But I'm afraid the pregame discussion is the only place you'll be handing out spanking smilies. You'll see ;)

I hope you win the Conquest award this time Headblend! (The one for fastest win, not fastest loss that is) ;)

If this was Monarch or Regent I might have been tempted to do another 2 City challenge..

:) Best of luck and remember:.......

With a harder level, there should be more competition for the losers spot! A fastest loss may not be that easy.

I won't be a favourite for fastest conquest but I give it a go for some sort of win. I'll just have to get into that micromanagement stuff ....

Just make sure you don't set your workers to automate and set the 2nd citizen to work rather than an entertainer.

I've learned a heap playing these Gotms but im still usually about 1000 years off :-)beating the fastest conquest/domination time. So I usually go for space, diplo, histograph or 100K.

Not that i'll be going for 100K this time with so many others going for it!

How about us 2 have a race for a particular victory condition?

I like the celts, but I like a lot of the civs. I'm not very good though, usually don't win on Monarch, so I doubt i'll be winning on emperor, but I guess anything could happen :) . Not sure which victory condition i'm going to go for, but i'm sure it'll be a peaceful one (when I go for war victory on Monarch I usually lose).

I see no good reason to move away from the starting position. We can have a nice 6-turn factory going there in no time, we have a luxury and lots of income for research. We can put at least two core cities on the visible rivers for extra food production.

Worker goes east to irrigate and road the Wine, then chops Forest or mines the Bonus Grasslands. The Wine Hill should be mined and roaded when no other worker actions are urgently needed, at the latest by the arrival of the Republic, when the pay-off is greater. Even without it we have 42 shields per cycle.

We keep the forest on the river for the factory and chop the other two. But should we chop forest(s) first or mine BG(s) first?

As you have already noticed, I updated the first post with the screenies -I was posting this warning here when I was interrupted by a looooooooong phone call of a girl I just cannot get rid of... :mischief:

Here are the piccies again

BTW, this is one of the most interesting pre-game threads I ever read -without even a picture!
And after reading it, of course, I think I'll stick with the Celts... :D

Tile on NE,NE is bonus grassland also.
And where is 6-turn SF? Irrigated wine on grassland gives us only 3 food under Despotism. Of course, I don't know now what is the type of tile on S,SW... May be flood plain? And I see coast/lake on N,N.

Celts are agricultural, so they get 3 in the city center when settling at fresh water.
But there's also where the problem comes in. I think the starting tile is not on the river.

That's good news, another 2,2,2 tile.

The cc also gives 3 food.

I thought it could be a plains, but I suppose you're right.

crosspost with Klarius.

It is on a river, I copied the starting situation.

Can you see that on the bare structure of the green? Amazing.

From the colours I would say that S, SW is plains and N, N either coast, lake, desert or flood plain.
