COTM101 Portugal - Pre-game discussion

attachment.php

Scope of the Game:

Civilization: Portugal
Difficulty: Emperor
Map size: 120(X) X 150(Y) - a little larger than "Large"
Map topology: Cylindrical Continents (x-wrap on)
Rivals: 9 pre-selected opponents
Barbarians: Restless
Victory conditions: All enabled

Surely few in history can embody the trials, tribulations and sense of adventure found in the game of civilization like Ferdinand Magellan. His body became a war trophy long before Elcano completed the historic circumnavigation. But it is Magellan that is lauded for this accomplishment. He is attributed (almost certainly wrongly) as saying "The Church says that the Earth is flat, but I know that it is round. For I have seen the shadow of the earth on the moon and I have more faith in the Shadow than in the Church." It is a nice story nonetheless. The photograph that accompanies this announcement is just a nod in the great man's direction.

This game returns almost to the standard out-of-the box Conquests scenario, though there are one or two minor tweaks for simple gameplay balance purposes, and the map is taller than it is wide.

This game has been modified from the standard COTM scenario in order to provide the chance of popping workers from huts in lieu of settlers. Note that it is still possible to pop cities from huts. Any technical or game play issues associated with this change should be reported to the GOTM staff immediatedly.

Hm. Decisions decisions. Settle on the spot and you *might* have a port city, or that could just as easily be a lake. Settle one tile above and you have a river your capitol can feed from.

Think I'll send the worker to the northwest tile to see if the northern area is worth settling.

Edit:

Link brings me to "Game Page Not Found" page.

The link will only work once the clock tells the server it is time to release it.
There is is game schedule thread that lists all the planned future games. :)

On another note.... Portugal is an expansionist tribe... ;)

[HINT] There's no guesswork needed. Lake water gives two food. Sea water gives one food. Ask your mouse to taste it :).

Well yes I know that no guesswork is needed once you open the save. Yet once you open the save you're not supposed to post here. So while I have the save unopened I can guess as much as I want ;)

Expansionist means a Scout, so Worker 1E, Scout 2SW.
Mountain that is 2NxNE is most likely on the coast as it shows shoreline on 2 sides and I'm betting on the third. It appears from the settings there will be lots of land.

It appears to be a resource poor starting area so once the initial exploring is done I'll decide which way to go. Even at Emperor I can afford to delay settling a couple turns.
The tile 1N of the Settler appears to have some kind of artifact at the "one o'clock position of the tile. At first glance it looked like Game but a closer exam just adds to the mystery. It certainly looks out of place.

Undecided yet on victory condition.

Don't forget about the restless Barbs.
