Could the Soviet Union have won the war in Afghanistan...

Basically, what Cheezy the Wiz said.

And @ Sill, the Iran-Contra aid wasn't exactly... official, and was not made to help the Iranians inasmuch as it was to help the Contra's and secure the release of hostages in Lebanon.

Also @ Sill

More or less a drop in the bucket compared to American aid to the Iraqi's.
I don't have my literature with me where I am right know. But I will get back to this on the weekend.

Think for yourself man!

I too agree with Cheezy. Pakistani aid was what kept the Mujahadeen going - along with the fact that the Soviets never really went after them with any great gusto - not US aid.

I am not very well informed on the topic of SU-war in Afghanistan but didn't the US fly in fighters for the Taliban form central asia? Sounds like quite an impotent contribution to me.
Wrong war. The US, up until recently - and they may not have actually closed the bases down yet, though the contracts haven't been renewed - had several bases in Central Asia from which they airlifted supplies and launched bombing missions in Afghanistan. This was against the Taliban, not for them. The Taliban didn't even exist in numbers until after the Soviets had left, though it's possible they received some US support in the dying days of the war. I honestly don't know.

That would've been impossible, owing mostly to the fact that the Taliban did not exist until two years after the socialist government collapsed, which was two years after the withdrawal of the last Soviet forces.

Cheezy the Wiz - On Smallpox Blankets: Oh please, that happened like twice. Don't turn an isolated incident into biological war/genocide/war crime/USAsuxxors nonsense. -

I rest my case.

Dear God, I think I actually remember that thread! How on earth did you find it?

Taliban didn't exist during the Soviet War in Afghanistan.

Yes, I'm convinced that somewhere in Cheezy's dark red commie heart there beats the heart of a true American patriot :mischief:

Yea, but I think that he has the makings of a Neo-Con, lol.

Lets not forget that Irving Kristol was a Trotskyist.

It actually went the other way. From neocon to commie-nist. But I still stand by that statement in Masada's signature; those were isolated events and its stupid for people to act like it was standard or even remotely common practice to do such a thing. But even then the only incidents I know of were perpetrated by British, not Americans, which makes the whole genocide thing even sillier.

Well, still, I was right about the Neo-Con "taint"

It's still there burning in Cheezy heart of hearts -- I see it sometimes when he talks so lovingly about firearms!

See that's one thing I like about the ol' Wiz he could simply use the argument to his political benefit but because it's so manifestly silly he decides to use other things. Nothing like some honesty from either side of the political podium eh?

Also, A --> B --> A :mischief:

The taint I talk about and what you believe is still burning in his heart are one in the same.
