Which of these would you consider the BEST TBS (other than the Civ series). Note there are a LOT of other quality quasi TBS games liek total war, Sins of the Solar empire and Paradox games); I wanted list of games that were teh MOST similar to Civ in style.

Please feel free to mention any I have missed - some of us may have overlooked some gems. (Like Annals of Rome - one of my favs but very dated)

Acronyms should always be explained the first time they are used in a thread IYKWIM (if you know what I mean). Please spell out what this is.

TBS is "Turn Based Strategy".

I'd say "Crystal Warriors" for Sega GameGear.
Never played any other besides Civilization.
:lol::lol::lol:

Fix the bugs, give it decent AI and Master of Magic will walk all over every other game in the genre. It's still my favourite and one of the most engaging and replayable games I have ever played, despite being an appaling mess.

I say Heroes of Might and Magic III. Great game if your eyes are poke-resistant. Those graphics can really hurt.

But isn`t this poll a little offtopic? I mean, we`re not talking about civ V here.

Besides Civ, I prefer Paradox games & Koei games(a Japanese game studio). Resently I have been addict to Elemental: the war of magic.
(Civ5 and Elemental are the only couple games I bought this year.)

PS: I don't know how many know about Koei. Koei's TBS game(I don't know the game's english name) are desighed good enough to learn from for Civ5.

My favourite (other than Civ, of course) would have to be the Advance Wars series for the GameBoy Advance and the DS. Unfortunately, no-one ever seems to have heard of it :(

Age of Wonders Shadow Magic.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 a close second.

Maybe it's because I find fantasy more uplifting and less cold/oh hi dark postmodern galaxy sci fi games. But Age of Wonders and HOMM both have:
-truly uplifting music, atmospheric music, epic music and "my heart is racing" music.
-Incredibly fun battles, where tactics was very important. AoW Shadow Magic also had some key strategic elements that interacted with the battle--your wizard could cast spells for armies within range of the Wizard Tower, for instance, but keeping your wizard in a secure Tower was as important as using him to bombard frontier enemies.
-Great graphics: the classical look of HOMM 3's "Bless" spell, for example, or the glowing magic of AoW's various fiery spells.
-Cohesive gameplay, and many diverse strategies. Pack up your Nomad city in AoW and move on to greener fields, choose the best secondary skills for your heroes in HOMM 3.

I think Civ V only satisfies the "good music" category of the above atm. I've seen better graphics in Heroes 3, and that game is OLD.

Moderator Action: Moved to all other games as this thread isn't discussing Civ V. :)

I voted for 'Other',
my favorites were Warlords games, with Warlords II being very nostalgic to me.

Warlords III was the peak for those series, then there hasn't been anything spectacular..

Heroes of Might and Magic II was sweet too.

Most of these games are awesome, I can't even decide...

What? The graphics for HoMM 2 and 3 are pretty nice. They're a little cheesy but they're charming. They're a lot better than the early 3D games that came out after anyway.

I voted for other with which i refer to Civ CTP . But this might be because i don't play a lot of TBS games.

*snap* oh thanks! I was trying to remember the name of that game series. It was quite fun.

I do love paradox games but they are almost strategic / RTS like Sins of a solar empire. I find the RTS aspect a bit annoying and missing stuff as it zooms by while trying to tweak stuff. Still, the EU series is readily quite fun.

XCom:UFO Enemy Unknown

I also like the Paradox games quite a bit, although they have their flaws.

Heroes 1-3 (And Hammer of the Gods :p) were very fun games, but too little strategy for me to actually call it a proper strategy game.

Master of Orion 2 is the correct answer.
