Well the only one of these I have played is SMAC and a bit of Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic. I haven't played my copy of GaCiv2 Gold yet. Voted SMAC

I'd say Sword of the Stars is pretty awesome too, though it has real time battles (which. actually, I like a lot more).

Fix the bugs, give it decent AI and Master of Magic will walk all over every other game in the genre. It's still my favourite and one of the most engaging and replayable games I have ever played, despite being an appaling mess.

Iranon, did you ever play with the patch/hack that allowed you to play hot-seat multiplayer? My roommate and I played so much dang MoM that way... AMAZING!

Two other great games you may or may not be aware of were War of the Lance and Birthright.

I never played multiplayer Master of Magic... I suppose it would have a good way to find out if there was indeed a balance of cheese.
War of the Lance brings back some reasonably fond memories, haven't played Brithright.

SMAC is part of the Civ series in my book, so I voted for Master of Orion 2.
